Not a fan of Black Flag, but Henry Rollins is a great story teller:

In a 2001 Howard Stern interview and other discussions, Black Flag's Henry Rollins harshly criticized U2, calling them "rubbish" and the "weakest rhythm section ever known". He described Bono as a "buffoon" and a "grandstanding poser," claiming their music is "adult-oriented crap" relying more on producers than talent.

Rhythm Section Criticism: Rollins labelled them "the most plodding, corny rhythm section ever to fill a stadium".
Bono's Persona: He often criticized Bono’s public image, referring to him as a "grandstanding poser" and a "buffoon" who should just be "in a bar... crooning".
Music and Quality: He described their music as "tired, adult-oriented crap" and "pap".
Production: Rollins claimed their records were essentially "mediocre Brian Eno records with a bad band in the way".

On my walk today, I listened to a playlist that has been dubbed Mom's Angst Songs - it's more accurately Mom's Songs To Belt Out When Alone. It happens that our present digs are quite remote, so - to the extent that I had the breath for it - I did in fact belt out the songs as I walked. I had a little cry over my dog, whose last day is likely either tomorrow or about ten days from now for reasons of the plot. I celebrated the fact that my replaced knees are not causing me any pain while walking, even at a shocking 15.5 min/mile pace (I can't even tell you how happy I am to get back to that) over 4 miles - they tell me about it in the evenings, but actual walking is pain-free.

Life, it seems, is a mixed bag. I'm grateful.

Tonight I'm thinking that a God Who created all things seen and unseen, as the saying goes, created both the simplest and the most complex forms of life. Therefore it seems at least plausible to me that God may also have ensouled God's creatures at various and appropriate levels. It's a whole lot easier for me to believe that my dog has a pure, if simple, soul, than that she has no soul at all.

Puts paid to the silly myths that the left and the MSM keep repeating. We needed to move quickly, because the Iranians were building missiles faster than we were building interceptors. Another yr, it would have been far harder to neutralize them. A year or two after that, it would have been impossible without the use of our own nuclear weapons, and their huge number of missiles would have protected their own user program.

Something else shouldn’t be forgotten. China isn’t a separate threat. China is the threat. Iran is just their proxy. Just as Iran ships its missiles to various terrorist groups around the Middle East, China sends Iran critical precursors and parts to build them.

Doran's "missile urgency" claim overstates the threat: Iran’s production was real but uneven post-2025 losses; no intel showed imminent nuclear weaponization or unstoppable shield by 2027–28. U.S./allied interceptor stocks were strained, yet the strikes themselves rapidly depleted high-end defenses (THAAD, Patriot) faster than Iran rebuilt—exacerbating the attrition problem they aimed to fix. https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/03/06/race-of-attrition-us-militarys-finite-interceptor-stockpile-is-being-tested/

Overall, this is hawkish myth-making that inflates timelines/threats to justify preemption, downplays blowback, and distracts from great-power priorities. Doran's "myths" rebuttal is itself critiqued as selective—ignoring how strikes validated fears of escalation while delivering incomplete victory.

Mixed degradation (facilities hit, but reconstitution via imports possible), high U.S. costs (munitions, lives, instability), hardened regime, no quick regime change. Strikes substituted one risk set for costlier long-term ones—classic war-of-choice overreach.

I agree and disagree. I don't think anybody was blackmailing Swalwell all these years. I think he was a true believer, a partisan. I don't think anybody was asking him to do what he didn't believe in. Right?

What changed was this election for governor. The Democrats have a big pie of voters in California, but in this race, they had eight candidates who were splitting it. And this race had two Republicans at the top for months and months, splitting their smaller pie of Republican voters.

The upshot was that two Republicans were leading in the polls for months and months. The vast majority of the Democrat party, and the media, assumed that one Democrat would pop to the top and win this thing. But who?

That's when Swalwell polling numbers started going up, from December to February to March. And then, one month from the start of voting, he was in the lead. And it caused a lot of stress in the other Democrat candidates.

For instance, evil Katie Porter. Both she and Swalwell are Representatives in Congress. So they know each other well, and hear all the rumors. So yes, I very much think she had a blackmail file on Swallow. I think she's the one who hired the G-Z influencer, Cheyenne Hunt.

And Hunt went on a hunt for anybody who would be ready to accuse Swallow. And they found some names pretty quickly. And when other Democrats heard about what was going on, they reached out to Swallow and tried to get him to pull out. And he refused, because he was in the lead, and the governor's mansion was right there. (This was a man who ran for president from Congress, so he had real delusions of power). And I'd heard of his name for years. Not as big as AOC, for instance, but he was one of these loud, vocal Democrat stars in the House.

Maybe he thought he could survive a sex scandal. And he had no idea they were about to hit him with a rape allegation. Even if he was warned, he might say, "I didn't rape anybody." It's common for innocent men to say that (of course) but it's also common for date raping men to say that. Confident men believe women want to have sex with them! We believe it in our bones.

I read that Pelosi warned him to withdraw. All of these people are in the House (Porter, Swalwell, Pelosi), so they all knew the rumors. But none of them cared, until the Democrat primary for governor pit them against each other.

Now the Police are in this bucket, too. And U2 as well. When any of this music comes on the radio, I change the station.

Peter Gabriel is that rare exception of a songwriter leaving his band and actually producing better songs afterwards. I am not sure there are actually any others who managed this feat.

As for Phil Collins, he wanted to make some money and so made his music more commercially oriented- he did this both as a solo artist and with Genesis after 1980 for the American market. I loved his first 3 solo albums but he went into decline after No Jacket Required which is a truly great pop music album. He deserved induction as a solo artist though I find the institution itself deeply degraded by who has been inducted over the last 20 years.
