It’s naive to assume that Israeli strategic planners did not anticipate that Strait of Hormuz would effectively be closed by Iran -- either by direct military attacks or simply threats to shipping. It has happened before.

The truth is Israel is not dependent on the Strait of Hormuz, so this would always be of secondary importance to them.

The thing is Netanyahu and Trump do not care about the consequences -- including suffering of hundreds of millions of people in the ME region. And then even more economic suffering across the world, where many countries are already economically fragile.

Old alliances keep going until a huge force breaks them -- everything has a limit and ultimately, like Lord Palmerson said:

Gemini AI's take:

As of March 23, 2026, Iran has responded with defiance to President Trump’s claims of productive negotiations, with state media and officials asserting that the U.S. "backed down" due to Iranian warnings rather than negotiations.
NBC News
NBC News
Here is the breakdown of the Iranian response based on reported events as of March 23, 2026:
Denial of Talks: Tehran has not confirmed any direct talks with the U.S. and previously vowed not to negotiate, according to Iranian state media. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed Trump's claims of a planned meeting, telling state television that there were "no arrangements for any fresh round of indirect talks".
"Backed Down" Narrative: Iranian state television and the semi-official Fars news agency claimed that Trump "feared Iran's response" to his ultimatum and "retreated" from the 48-hour deadline to attack power plants.
Threats of "Zero Restraint": Iran previously vowed to employ "zero restraint" and hit energy infrastructure across the Persian Gulf, as well as banks that do business with the US, if President Trump carried out his threat to "obliterate" Tehran's power plants.
Defiance on Hormuz: While Trump cited progress in negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian sources indicated that the Strait would remain closed to "enemies" and that its closure was a direct result of US-Israeli attacks.

Trump's Claim: Trump announced a five-day pause on planned strikes against Iranian power plants, claiming "very good and productive conversations" with Tehran regarding a resolution to the conflict.
Iran's Response (via CBS News/State Media): Iranian sources and state media have contradicted this, with a source telling reporters there is "no direct or indirect contact with Trump".
"Backing Down" Narrative: Iranian state media reported that Trump "backed down" from his 48-hour ultimatum to open the Strait of Hormuz, claiming this retreat was prompted by Iranian threats to target U.S. and Israeli energy facilities in the region.
Increased Tensions: The situation remains extremely volatile, with CBS reporting that Iran has promised "zero restraint" if their energy infrastructure is struck.

I asked Google AI where any official message would come from, given the destruction of so many leaders:

While the conflict has caused significant disruption, the Iranian government has not been completely dissolved. The "official" messages you are seeing come from several surviving layers of the state's power structure:

The Supreme Leader's Office: Ali Khamenei and his inner circle remain the ultimate authority. Even in times of extreme crisis, the Assembly of Experts ensures the state maintains a "unified" and "coherent" voice to rally its core supporters.

The IRGC (Revolutionary Guard): Despite heavy losses, the IRGC continues to issue aggressive statements through state television, often acting as the primary voice of military defiance.

Surviving Diplomats: Figures like Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are still active on social media and international platforms, providing the formal diplomatic denials of U.S. claims.

State Media Control: The regime maintains strict control over state broadcasting, which allows them to project an image of a functioning, "calm" government to the public, even when the reality on the ground is chaotic.

Why does it seem "coherent"?
The coherence is largely a survival strategy. The regime uses its remaining communication channels to present a "defensive mode," framing any pause in U.S. strikes as a victory for Iranian "resolve" rather than the result of negotiations. This messaging is designed to prevent internal collapse and project strength to both domestic and international audiences.

Roll the dice. You may be hearing from someone who knows a lot or who knows nothing.

@Little E confirms ignorance of how the stock market functions. Between 25% and 50% of market value is linked to speculation and momentum. When the gambler money leaves the market crashes, and when it returns the market bubbles.

Anyone playing momentum trades wants to exaggerate movement to milk a bit more quick profit. Either up or short works for them. They thrive on uncertainty, not "desperation." The market may bounce up and down for no true reason when near a bottom. When political certainty returns, a simple bull market with ever expanding leverage will return.

Fundamentalist Iran wore out its welcome a long time ago. Its only friends are manipulative troublemakers (Russia), and those who directly benefit from cheap oil (China). But, they are weak friends and don't like Iran either.

I want to see Iran's capabilities destroyed. I don't want to see a negotiation with others still in the existing power base. I want to see a permanent change in that country. I definitely don't want to see a TACO. Or any kind of failed bluff. The subsequent details, now coming out, do seem to indicate the team has been talking with someone. Who? And will that amount to anything?

As for the markets, they are unwinding from years of overstimulative policies from both the Fed and the various administrations. A couple decades, really. And the government has all the debt to prove it! Right, Leland? Am I divorced from reality here? In particular, market averages have made several highs over the last six years since the pandemic madness; and those, and the intervening lows, have all been bound up together in one ball of wax. Meaning, I believe, it has been one big top.

I don't think there is any way back for the stock markets from here. Long-term valuations show the extraordinary background. I think we are seeing a peak of historic significance. I think it explains many of the bizarre phenomena in our society. I think the turn in the cycle is about much more than this war, but the war will probably play a role in that. This good-news jump just took the QQQ back near a major resistance point, for example. That is typical action at some point in a downtrend -- at a relatively early point in a downtrend.

I think investors should be extremely careful with their capital here. The risk/reward ratio seems as one-sided as it could ever get. And years of the Greenspan put, the Bernanke put, and the overall Fed put have just lulled investors into much too much complacency.

"That's all there is, there isn't any more." Very hard to imagine, isn't it? But..... that's the picture as I see it.

Leland చెప్పారు...

Am I divorced from reality here?

Indications are yes. It took the start of hostilities with Iran for your predictions in January (maybe it was December) of stock market collapse to materialize; and actually, the market has only pulled back to where it was when you made those predictions.

Yes, at the noon hour, there is profit taking occurring in today’s market with gains cutting back by about 50%. However, that’s typical trading behavior. What you are claiming is a systemic problem with the markets which has yet to materialize. Maybe you are the new Michael Burry, but I’m skeptical.

A casual check of stock market prices misses that it involves two very different groups:

1. Long term "buy and die" investors who may not touch their accounts for 20, 30, or 40 years. They don't pay much attention and form the solid base of valuations.

2. Short term traders and, especially, those who trade options and on margin. When the news turns bad they MUST sell or reposition, or their brokerage executes a margin call to makes decisions for them. This happens during every sudden crisis. See 9/11, the 2008-2009 subprime meltdown, the COVID crash, and the Trump tariff trantrum. This explains most "V" shaped market periods.

The true believers may cause more meaningful damage, as their trust dies and withdrawals happen over long periods. See the slow motion dotcom crash following the year 2000, after AOL purchased Time Warner. See how "Emerging Markets are the future" thinking of the Beijing Olympics of 2008 turned when people saw China's bullying, Russia's invasions circa the 2014 Olympics, and the debacle of Brazil's 2016 Rio Olympics.

Iran 2026 has the earmarks of a "V" shaped period. Too many other countries produce and need oil for the downturn to last.

A couple of people mentioned watching Lilias Folan doing yoga on PBS in the yoga mat thread. I just saw an obit for her in the NYT. She was 90.

From a Handicapping prospective (doping trumps war so far and its end)
What a real U.S.–Iran peace deal would look like in reality
Iran most likely would want relief from sanctions, guarantees on no stikes on Iranian territoriesability to keep some enrichment capacity,no regime change and a seize fire for their regional partners. This to me would be minimal wants.
trump would want Iran to stop attacks, limits on nuclear enrichment if even none at all(DOA),pull back of militias a verification method, cooling off period ,and some more little ditties.
Because we know you have two of the most verified liars in existence this would have to be seen to know who is lying and who isnt about ("a call")for a deal .Wasnt the initial stance ,no quarter ,unconditional surrender(that was a no go right from the beginning)these people have been fighting since beginning of their existence)I would believe in order to be real.We would need to see Qatar,Oman, or maybe Switzerland coming in to mediate, both sides with agreeing commitments ,not what trump says or what Iran says they both are confirmed liars.Markets stabilizing after details not before(as I pessimistically believe trumps statement was to stop market and oil shares and gas from bleeding Americans dry)I think there would need to be a troop reposition, why would Iran trust US, we already dont trust Iran. We are not seeing any of these things so far its all just rhetoric from both sides. And what is a surrender to Iran? Halting all enrichment and accepting US terms without negotiation publicy admitting defeat and surrender(aint gonna happen, they have been around long before US since the 7th Century US is a baby democracy.
That’s not happening. Its political posture, not surrender.
Iran would never do that unless they were facing total collapse, and they’re nowhere near that.
So when someone frames it like “they called us for peace”, it’s political posture, not surrender.
Why the “they called us” line feels like a market move,a con
because it fits the pattern when markets tank, tensions spike, investors panic, and the leaders say "we are close to a deal and everyone buys it.
A real peace deal has structure, a surrender is humiliation and a political statement especially from our leaders is about timing not structure.
My odds line on this whole "deal" after statements of NO QUARTER and only uncondition surrender and in 48 hours all signals me to low odds of this happening.trump is all over the place with this and even his own crew cant get the stories straight. And do you think Israel is gonna stop and Bibi IS THE GUY IN CONTROL and he has played trump all along. I would suggest to my posse to hold your wagers until real signs start showing up,this is the guy who said UKRAINE IN 1 DAY and that never happened, 15 months NO DEAL... cmon man, see how with just a word the $$$ eased ,its a freakin game with the same amount of proud vets killed with trump as sleepy Joes withdrawal from ME. Its a tie with the incompetence. NO NEW WARS,,AMERICA FIRST ,how gullible do you have to be ,cmon man..YOU REALLY BELIEVE TRUMP GOT A CALL? FROM WHO?
