Finally, rain this afternoon and a nice cool front. The redbuds are in full bloom now, and the Mexican plums are either just past, or just about to bloom. The woods are fragrant with the plum blossoms, and the redbud blossoms litter the forest floor around the creeks. Cutter ants like these, so there are densely purple trails on the ground where the cutter ant workers are lugging the redbud blossoms back the underground colony, to grow their mutualistic fungus on them, and feast.

Great news! We have hit eleven hospitals, a desalination plant, and oil refineries! I am sure that those protesters will show up on the street any minute now.

Plus Trump has assured us that it was Iran who killed all of those schoolgirls. He said that we couldn't have done it because we don't hit civilian targets, only the Iranians do that! You don't know how relieved I am to hear this, you know, having voted for him three fucking times because he said that he wasn't going to take us into stupid wars. So I watched the whole Jesse Jackson Chicago funeral. Previously I had just seen snippets.

- Kommie-Lay, Biden, and Obama didn't devote their whole speeches to anti-Trump agitprop. Really just one or two lines. Still no reason to do it, given the occasion and their position.

- I don't think Clinton said anything bad about Trump. He stayed focused on all his Jesse Jackson anecdotes.

- Fucking Al Sharpton included lots of anti-Trump invective, as well as saying USA 250 isn't something blacks should celebrate.

- For some reason the President of Colombia (two o's, the country, not the university) gave a speech, that went overtime and included lots of anti-Trump invective, especially against the Iran punitive expedition. Guess he thinks he's next.

- Several speakers noted how Jackson was one of the last active notables who actually lived under Jim Crow in any meaningful way (if you were a small child in 1965, you don't count). Perhaps when that generation finally passes, there will be less animosity. Most of us escaped from the old country; for American blacks, this is the old country. If they don't have physical distance, maybe the distance of time will help.

- The black church has outlived its usefulness. It was a place of respite from oppression; now it's a place to hide from integration. Even a woke, rainbow-flag-flying, illegal-hiding church like ECUSA or ELCA would be preferable at this point. To continue the immigration analogy, we don't have German or Italian or Irish churches anymore - those groups have spread out and their parishes have everyone. Spanish-language churches last about one generation, and then everyone marries a gringo/a and joins an evangelical megachurch. Black churches, which often have most of their members driving in from the suburbs to attend, just teach that the old country hasn't changed.

- Maybe someone can start a white church as a reverse-psychology trap: Sharpton can organize a bunch of people to storm the place, only to find it's just plain-vanilla (hee hee) Christianity. The stormers would be welcomed to come back next Sunday. CC, JSM

For a long time I've been searching for an explanation of why life is so fucked up. Here is a result of my research. It's only a partial explanation, but I think it explains why Hollywood stars, academics, rock stars, major poets and other such people are such a bag of hammers.......I posit something called the aesthetic fallacy. In the Iliad, the guy with all the best lines is Achilles, not Hector. In Paradise Lost, we see that Lucifer is a far more interesting character than God. I just recently read Dante's Inferno. He doesn't glamorize the Devil, but there's no doubt the best scenes and greatest poetry occur in Hell, not Purgatory or Heaven......It seems that people of refined sensibility are always attracted to the most vainglorious asshole. Look at the press Napoleon gets. It's a part for Marlon Brando. The Duke of Wellington is a bit part......Some of the biggest assholes in history have attracted the greatest poets and artists of their age. There were any number of Nobel Prize winners who went to pay homage to Lenin and even Stalin. Warren Harding not so much........I think in a perverse way, the artists of our age are inspired by Trump. He's pretty much the anathema of everything they profess and hold dear, but he's got a huge personality. I think the abuse and invective he receives are much more polished and literate than anything ever directed at Romney or even Nixon. Trump definitely has the starring role in this era's dramas. No actor wants to play the part of Starmer or the Ayatollah, and I don't think any novelist or playwright wants to write of them.....I won't be around, but I expect there will be lots of plays, novels, movies made about Trump and A-list stars will compete for the part.

In comes a new age Pee-wee Herman unicorn. All for the prize of fame. They allowed you to be ghetto, be nasty, be a mean girl. Then Obama, the guy who upbraided black men for not supporting Kamala Harris . . . he supports Tala-freako. Jasmine Crockett was nothing more than a caricature in the hands of the puppet master. These white liberals who cosplay as if they support us and love us . . . but as we support the policies that by and large are deleterious to us, they gain. They win. They build. They grow. What happens to us? We steadily decline. Jasmine Crockett will go down in history as one of the potential voices of the Democrat Party. But she got drunk on the likes and the clicks. And in comes a unicorn to fill her shoes. I’ve seen this show before.”

Is it possible to catch yourself mis-thinking? You can think about something, and start to develop a certain view of the matter, but then ... recognize ... that your reasoning has moved along channels that are not logical, or that may be logical but nonetheless are based upon "facts" that are dubious, or "principles" that are tendentious. Your mind is pursuing folly, and you must rein it in. But who is the hound, and whom the houndsman?
Perhaps one of you Grok-whisperers could ask Grok whether it (It? Perhaps Xe?) ever finds xitself thinking things that are not worthy of being thought. Seems to me, that Grok is a manifestation of a computational machine. And a machine will necessarily do what it was constructed to do, unless it fails mechanically. An analog computer, pressed to consider a quantity that is infinite, can fail by melting a wire, or short-circuiting a capacitor. But how does a digital computer, programmed to simulate the excreta of thought (not thought. The excreta of thought -- documents) respond to the infinite?

I suspect that the AI programs will avoid self-referential infinities by simulating, not the response of an infinite mind to infinity, but rather, the response of a limited mind to the necessity of producing a response. The AI will do what Adam Schmitt would do. Lie. After all, AI is not actually programmed to think. It is programmed to act like a highly literate human doing xer best to think.

Yes, indeed. Computers cannot operate with the real numbers, they can only represent the rationals. Which is fine, as long as nothing in the Universe requires irrationals for its representation. But the available evidence indicates that the reality is very much otherwise.

I am currently building a "brain extension" if you will. I am using 4 different models/agents for different tasks as well as a couple aggregators like Openrouter and Obsidian.

It is a set of linked markdown files that contain instructions and definitions and "strategies." Obsidian is a program that lets you create linked and indexed text files so you can connect notes in ways that are easily searchable and organized by agents.

It is more like giving directions to a junior dev than anything else. It is forcing me to think about how I think and how I get things done.

How do I verify output? What instructions do I give to a junior dev in order to get them to verify output? How is it different using claude code to verify output? Does using Gemini to verify claude code output with my instructions work better than having claude verify itself?

But the LLMs created the biological interface to use electronic intelligence.

Everyone has that opportunity now to create their own interface that allows them to run parallel tasks on the electronic manifestation of their will while they load and unload a context window where they focus their biological attention.

Jupiter చెప్పారు...

"These Mathematicians Don’t Believe Large Numbers Exist."
Indeed. Which approaches the fundamental question; what does "exist" mean? Ann Althouse "exists" (and is lovely and gracious, wise and comprehensively admirable). But does 7 exist? Well, of course it does. When you are counting, between six and eight, you employ seven, and counting would not be possible without it. And counting possible, so 7 must exist. Right?

I think the way it works, is that things "exist" mathematically, if it is internally consistent to consider that they exist. If no contradiction arises from assuming their existence.

But this is different from physical existence. Although, how it is different is not evident. I believe that physics is necessarily mathematical, and all physics is math. But not all math is physics. "Handmaiden of the sciences" my firm and well-shaped ass.

Jupiter చెప్పారు...

Speaking of which, I well recall, in 8th grade algebra, realizing that any surface in three dimensions is represented by a constraint equation in x, y and z. Pondering on this, I was led to conclude that there must be a constraint equation in x, y and z that precisely described the surface of Sandy's ass, in contact with the seat in front of me. It seemed evident to me,
that the contemplation of that constraint equation, would not be equivalent, in any important sense, to the contemplation of Sandy's ass. Not by a long shot. And I was in a position to know.

Josephbleau చెప్పారు...

There is no infinity but thinking makes it so. The theory of infinity in countable and uncountable nature is taught to college sophomores in a class called Marh Anaysis I. This class is taken by students who are seriously considering careers in math related fields.

There have been articles on the web stating that college students no longer need to pass college algebra classes because it makes them fail.

So there is going to be a greater separation, where college educated people are not the same. There will be math and non math people.

Josephbleau చెప్పారు...

Marh Analysis I is the same as Math Analysis I but taught under different faculty.

Jupiter చెప్పారు...

I should be more careful. Only a convex surface is described by a constraint equation. A folded surface requires a more complicated mathematical description.

"Sandy, the aurora is rising behind us
Those pier lights, our carnival life forever
Oh, love me tonight, for I may never see you again
Hey, Sandy, girl, my, my, my, my baby."

Sandy was a chipper little blue-eyed blonde, who lived a ways down the Hill, along the route I walked to Thomas Jefferson Junior High. She sat in front of me in algebra, and I thought she was extremely attractive. It never occurred to me to tell her so. But the mathematical description of her ass, in contact with that chair, most assuredly "exists", in the mathematical sense. In fact, it is also a function of time; at each moment of time, there is a constraint equation in x, y, and z describing the surface of her pert little butt, as pressed against that chair. Over time, it unfolds. It exists. Nothing that ever was, is no more. Look! It is there!

Josephbleau చెప్పారు...

So it's not a matter of "we targeted", schools, and orphanages and hospitals. Our ordinance is extremely accurate and hits within a few feet of the target. That's a wonderful photograph! Also a perfect picture of my state of mind,

Lost my best friend of 60 years, Friday night. He was 86 and until six months ago; as vibrant as most men in their 30s. In the gym almost every day and always in motion. Not a wrinkle on his face.

Came down with something on a cruise. Turned into pneumonia. Ten long days in the hospital. Despite his best effort and my relentless coaching, his body resisted recovery. Then, a dianosis of pulmonary fibrosis. Death sentence.

Weight since high school was a steady170. At he end he was 110. He understood the inevitable but fought it until his tortured stuggle for every breath wss silenced.

Althhough unresponsive as the color of life drained away, his final gifts to his family and me were profoundly moving.

With just a day left, he opened his eyes and announced that he wanted to marry his wife again. Within a couple of hours, a pastor appeared and his wife found the white dress she'd worn on their wedding day in Plevin, Bulgaria, 33 years ago (the dress still fit perfectly). His daughters propped him up and managed to get him into a clean dress shirt

The wedding lasted a few minutes and there was great joy in the eyes of re-newed man and wife. Promises made. Promises kept. Within minutes, he lay back down and continued his final journey.

I sat beside him for another hour and held his hand while I talked. His eyelids flickered once or twice and he made a sound that must have been "yes" when his wife asked if he wanted more morphine.

I leaned over and kissed the top of his head and told him, I'd see him down the road, if he was gone when I came back.

About1:30 in the morning, his wife called. I expected notification that the end had come. But, No... Instead, she said, "He's wide awake and he wants to talk with you." So we talked.. I could not understand a word he said other than "love" and "friend". After about 20 minutes, his wife took the phone and said he was sleeping again. She told me the next morning that he died not long after we'd talked.

I thought I was ready for the news. Wrong. I got on the phone and inventoried my roster of fellow survivors. All accounted for; alert, healthy and open to the idea that the best may be yet to come. Dreamers gotta dream...

Appologies for the drama. I had to write something.
