"Legal observers exist to help vindicate the First Amendment rights of the assembled. According to the National Lawyers Guild, which formalized the practice..."

"... such observers 'create documentation during events which can later be use (sic) in defense cases, public statements, and litigation which aims to hold law enforcement agencies accountable for the actions of their officers.' The Guild notes that legal observation has its roots in the Black Panthers’ 'cop watch' activities of the late 1960s.... In 1968, in connection with anti-war and racial justice demonstrations in New York City, the Guild 'took components from this practice' of cop watch to develop its legal observer program – the self-described 'eyes and ears' of a larger infrastructure of 'arrest hotlines, jail support teams, community bail funds ... attorney referral networks, and more.' Those who have adopted the Guild’s practice, such as the Minnesota ICE Watch group with which Renee] Good was reportedly affiliated, have advocated for activities that blur the line between observation and participation in protests...."

Writes Benjamin Weingarten in "The Grey Zone: When Do Protest Observers Become Lawbreaking Participants?" (Real Clear Investigations).

"Some anti-ICE groups, as well as the Guild and the ACLU, warn activists that there is a line between protected behavior and that which might run afoul of the law, and that observers may sometimes become liable as actors. The Guild warns that law enforcement may smudge that line. 'Just because you have legal rights does not mean the government will respect them. In fact, law enforcement will generally trample over your rights,' its 'Know Your Risks' pamphlet reads.... For its part, DOJ has slapped some 650-plus individuals with charges under federal law since the summer of 2025, according to a recent Reuters analysis – including for allegedly following federal agents in their cars. In some instances, media reports suggest that prosecutors have downgraded such charges or chosen not to prosecute...."

"Legal observers"..
can we At Least, All Agree?
That "Legal observers" have the CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT,
to attack law officers with automobiles?
That "Legal observers" have the CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT,
to go armed with intend to shoot law officers?

can we AT LEAST agree to that?
If not, i'm not sure what there is left to discuss

I detest the word “exists.” “Legal observers exist to help”
should be “Legal observers help vindicate . . . “

The proliferation of surveillance cameras, phone cameras, and police body cameras have helped vindicate police and helped discredit “legal observers.”

Just spitballin’ here but how about:

When they break the law?

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

"Legal Observers" have no extra-Constitutional rights, certainly no right to engage in harassment or obstruction. Organizing for the purpose of obstruction is a further crime of conspiracy to obstruct, such as Don Lemon is now finding out.

Cities Church is private property every person who entered as or with protesters disrupted the service. Every person who remained after being asked to leave was a trespasser. These are not protected First Amendment activities. The only “blurriness” or “greyness” exists because scofflaw Democrats and their scofflaw judges, lawyers, mediaswine a juries concoct them.

I'm sorry, did I hear them say "formalized the practice"? It may be regularized, even bureaucratized, but it is not in any sense formalized.

Legal observers are just people. Self-important petty tyrants, sure. But just people none-the-less, with no official standing.

And the National Lawyers Guild is a commie operation whose only purpose is to undermine free societies and make them ungovernable to pave the way for revolution.

So "legal observers" are wonderful, but republican poll watchers are bad and should be removed/excluded?

Renee Good was blocking vehicle traffic during an ICE enforcement effort and rammed an officer with her vehicle while her “wife” verbally harassed officers outside the vehicle. It’s all on video. Legal observer my ass!

Are these "legal observers" certified by anyone? Do they have Id? (besides a hat) can one be a legal observer without legal expertise like being a lawyer? Can I just go to a demo and call myself a legal observer?

Was Don Lemon a legal observer in Tha church demo

Assault is a line. For instance, you can yell invectives at police, who are simply crossing the street. But if you throw your sandwich at them, you are no longer observing. Same if you put your car in gear and accelerate towards an officer. Or you interfere with an officer engaged with other protesters, even if you believe the officer is in the wrong. An observer would record the officer's behavior, report it to others to be used later in a court of law, and otherwise not engage directly, especially physically, with officers.

But We of the Guild wouldn't, ya unnerstand, we wouldn't dream of ever, ever, crossing the line into something unethical or illegal.....

"...In some instances, media reports suggest that prosecutors have downgraded such charges or chosen not to prosecute...." How many? That smells like a 10% issue trying to pass as a 90% one - since those reports are just suggesting.

Yes. Because it's not a real thing. The NLG doesn't own it, the government doesn't regulate or license it. It's just a made-up title some protestors give themselves so they can order people around.

The National Lawyers' Guild is a front for Communists, and I mean actual Communists, and not the the term of abuse we sloppily use on the Right for obnoxious socialist-adjacent Democrats like a few of the people who post here. These are the real kind of Marxist/Leninist/Stalinist/Maoist Communists. The violent break-eggs-to-make-omelets kind. The gulag and torture and collective-punishment kind. The Bill Ayers types who eagerly look forward to the exemplary mass execution of millions of Americans after they seize power in a violent armed revolution.

Anything we can do to bring them low is OK by me. They are among the most evil people in the world.

As pointed out above, the NLG are doctrinaire communists. Interesting that they cite the Black Panthers, an armed terrorist group, as the origin of their bogus "legal observer" scam. It is a shame that you can no longer tell the difference between the NLG and the ACLU. Back in the late 60s, a friend of my father's moved to Australia because he thought that the US was going to hell and nothing could stop it. He eventually moved back but I think he was merely premature. Unfortunately, I have no idea where you'd move to these days.

I would say it’s when they intentionally, physically block law enforcement from performing legally assigned duties.
This is what happened in the 2 shooting deaths in MN.
I would not have shot them, but that’s why I’m not in law enforcement.

Me too. Some legislative body somewhere in the county attempts to violate the 2nd Amendment over and over on a nearly continuous basis.

It’s a system not an instance. We have legal observers, we
Have:

Operations:
1. Media fluffing. Publicity and framing of tv coverage in advance.
2. Coordination with sympathetic local government including police.
3. Finance, bus in the homeless.
4. Documentation, full coverage video. Legal observers to document police actions.
5.De-arrest and extraction by overwhelming police.
6. Direct violence using weapons of bricks, frozen water cups, fireworks, beating.
7. Medics to claim innocent support.
8. Logistics, provide gas masks, fireworks, bricks, and Molotov cocktails. Jail support by record keeping.
9. Bail support, bail out the team.
10. Auxiliaries, scouts who provide intel, banner teams who carry big signs. Teachers unions that take kids out of school and throw them in the fray.
