Is it true that "Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new supreme leader, struck a defiant tone on Thursday in his first known public comments since succeeding his slain father"?

That's what I'm reading in the NYT, but what proof is there that the man is even alive?

In written statements carried by Iranian state media, Mr. Khamenei said that Iran would pursue “an effective and regret-inducing defense” and that “the lever of blocking the Strait of Hormuz must also continue to be used.”

Written statements seem more like proof that the man is dead (or in a coma).

The text of The New York Post article gestures at the uncertainty with the word "allegedly": "Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, allegedly released his first statement Thursday vowing to use the 'lever' of closing the Strait of Hormuz to international energy shipping — after reports circulated that he was in a coma and had his leg amputated after being severely injured in the US-Israeli strikes that killed his father and other family members."

The Post's headline is less careful: "Iran’s new impotent supreme leader releases first statement — after reports he’s in coma, had leg amputated." Did Khamenei release the statement or did others do the releasing and use his name?

In case you haven't noticed, this is what Iranians are famous for: Drawing out a scenario for as long as it can possibly be drawn out, for strategic and tactical reasons. When Trump or his team speaks, skepticism is dialed to 11; when the Iranians speak, its is from God's lips to the Times headline.
While we don't know the details, leadership and the Iranian economy are close to collapse. They are running out of fuel, and even water. One can only surmise the internally, no one is in charge. Yet because it is hidden behind a black curtain, we assume they are unified in defiance, while the US is indecisive, failing, with no direction. Pathetic.

But Osama bin Laden died after being maimed in an American air raid on the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan in December 2001, a French expert on the Arab world, Ghislaine Alleaume, a historian and Arabist at the French National Research Centre, believes. She bases her theory mostly on a video of the al-Qaeda leader broadcast by al-Jazeera television on 27 December 2001. Bin Laden looks weary and sick, but Mme Alleaume also believes he has had his left arm amputated.

A Funeral Notice for Osama bin Laden was published on December 26, 2001, in the Egyptian newspaper al-Ward.

On October 16, 2002, Israeli sources said Israel and the United States assessed that Bin Laden probably died in the U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan in December 2001. They said the emergence of new messages by Bin Laden are probably fake.

Iranian military claims the US hit a girl's school at a time when both sides are firing missiles. A video showed the seconds leading up to impact, with a rocket trail veering sharply at altitude and the rocket re-aiming straight down.

Iranians claim it was a Tomahawk cruise missile. But these missiles are designed to skim the surface in order to elude radar. But the incident took place next to a IRGC base - this is provided as evidence that it was a errant target - but curiously doesn't explain why it would exclude an errant Iranian missile from consideration. They have a much, much higher failure rate.

Of course we can. The US is a net oil exporter. So, I believe, is Israel. CA (and dependent on CA gas, AZ and NV too) may suffer, but no one else really will. But this war has effectively shut down most of Iran’s production and exports. Ditto its refineries. Hardest hit may be the IRCG, with the terminal, from which it shipped oil, shut down by shutting down its power. It depended on sales of that oil for funding. So, currently isn’t paying its troops.

Bruce Hayden చెప్పారు...

“ If the girls' school was deliberately targeted, yes, then it's a war crime. If not, not.....A better question: was the girls' school deliberately located to be in the blast zone of a prime military target. If so, should that be considered a war crime.......”

This is silly. It’s manufactured outrage. We have watched for years the fake stories of Israeli hitting this or that civilian target in Iran’s surrogates around Israel, and esp Gaza. Sometimes a hospital is supposedly hit. Mostly, if a hospital is really hit, it was either sitting on missiles, or other weapons stored under it. The rest of the time, it was just made up with fake video. No, hitting a military target sitting next to or under a civilian target like a school or a IRCG facility is not a War Crime. Siting the military target that way was the War Crime.

But realistically, the only evidence that that school was hit, at all comes from the Iranians, repeated ad naseum by such TDS addled media outlets as the NYT and some of the broadcast channels. And, of course, several of the more addled commenters here. Repeatedly in each thread.

And, of course, there is the video of missile tracks showing that it was an Iranian missile misfire that actually hit the school. That was a week ago. The lie is heard around the world, and repeated so many times, that it is believed by the gullible, while the proof that it was false is quickly forgotten.

Bruce Hayden చెప్పారు...

These misfires are relatively common for the missiles fired by Iran’s surrogates at Israel. Which is more likely, a million dollar Tomahawk missile, that has already flown successfully for much of a thousand miles, to all of a sudden veer into the school at the very end of its flight, or the $100k Iranian missile to do that within seconds after launch? Esp comparing US and Iranian military quality control, and taking into consideration how often their missiles have misfired in the past? Is this more likely in the first seconds of flight of a cheap missile? Or the last planned seconds of a far longer flight of a much more expensive missile?

2005-2014 price per barrel of oil was in excess of $100/barrel non-stop for 9 years, adjusted for today's dollars. World was fine. (Briefly went way below that during the great recession)

The school missile story is one of the great distractions I've ever seen. I've now seen photos of "pieces of the missile" lined up in front of the school with clear as day U.S. language on it. As if assembling pieces of a missile and putting them in one location by those whose interest is to claim it wasn't their fault is a legit investigation. I've seen videos of an errant Irani-launched missile indicating that was the source of it, and I've seen investigations by CNN showing how the school was smack dab in the middle of various legitimate military targets and the U.S. precisely hit all THOSE targets - with the inference being the U.S. probably missed once and hit the school. No actual evidence of such.

Iran is legitimately acting as a terrorist state and lashing out with missiles and drone bombings at civilian targets far and wide in the region, attacking other countries not involved, but I've seen/read 20 stories about a single Iranian-claimed girls school for every 1 story about the high-rises and other civilian targets the Iranians are attacking in various other countries that are not even directly involved in the war.

First class propaganda all around. If anything, Iran's response to the U.S./Israeli attack shows you exactly who they are - an unstable terrorist state with outsized impact on a critical region and transportation hub who will use their influence to hurt anyone and everyone when they feel under attack.

Let's assume that it was a US/Israel missile. And it was a school. And the numbers are correct (I remember the 'hospital allegedly hit in Oct 2023 and it was hundreds. Turned out pretty well everything was a lie). Accidents will happen, especially if military targets (contra the Laws of War, btw) are located in civilian areas. And, just as in 1944/5 the French accepted civilian casualties as a price of liberation, so I think (and I know some Iranian opposition in London who say the same) Iranians will accept the cost.
I assume the new leader is seriously injured if not dead. If he was alive he'd be live broad casting. Everybody knows that. In June 1941 (after a week) Stalin went live on Soviet radio. If the new guy isn't doing this he's dead.

Good comment Treejoe. I’m also tired of hearing about “unarmed frigates” without any mention of the daily Iranian attacks on civilian targets in neighboring countries that have not even attacked Iran. A tanker at anchorage in Kuwait was intentionally attacked by Iran. That’s a humanitarian and environmental disaster caused by Iran.

The Times wants Khameini alive, the Post wants him dead. Simple.

Even if not live, you'd see him doing pre-recorded audio and or visual recordings and having those shared far and wide.

The fact is RC you don't give a crap about Iranian school girls. You just want Islam to win and Trump to fail. Just be honest.

Trump could start calling him Stumpy Moe. Or Long John Silvavi. CC, JSM

Tree Joe, good point about France. We set all the Norman towns on fire in the D-day prep. They still have memorials and exhibits in honor of the firemen. But they don’t blame us. CC, JSM

There was also the heroic kraut general who refused to set fire to Paris, and the one who declared Rome an open city. The IRGC could do that if they value Persian heritage. CC, JSM

And let's not forget something else: Iranians have 3 variants of cruise missiles of their own, in case the photos of a winged cruise missile have caused anybody to assume these are pictures of a US Tomahawk cruise missile and nothing else.

The Quds-1, Ya-Ali, and Soumar/Hoveyzeh all have that similar configuration. All are medium range armaments designed to hit anything within the region.

Some of the analyses that I've read have looked at the configurations from those photos and concluded that the wing placement along the fuselage indicates that it's an Iranian missile.

Aggie.
They had three variants. Not any more.
Development.
Iranian citizens are spotting IRG troops or Basij militia checkpoints and telling the IDF. The IDF sends a missile.

And now I see that Coffee & Covid has made a similar observation, and seen some of the same analysis. '

No discussion of these factors in the sympathetic / patriotic American media. Not curious; Blame USA. Reconsider only if unable to avoid revisions on threat of lawsuits.
