On Thursday, a woman named Sharon from Minnesota called into C-SPAN’s “open forum” to express her despair about the cost of living. “I’m 65 years old. I’m legally blind. I’m on disability. I went to my doc, and I lost 28 pounds in the last year. I did not need to lose 28 pounds. I did not try to lose 28 pounds. I lost the 28 pounds because I cannot afford to eat anymore,” Sharon explained, speaking clearly even though she sounded near tears. Because of Trump administration cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and the high cost of groceries, gas and electricity, Sharon only allows herself $65 a month for food....
Of course, that sounds shocking and horrible. I have empathy for Sharon and do not like to see anyone struggling so hard, but I wondered whether it was a least possible to maintain your health while spending only $65 a month. Grok assures me that it is possible. I think we all know what this diet would consist of — lots of oatmeal, rice, beans, potatoes, cabbage, and carrots, along with some apples, bananas, and eggs. It's terrible to allow yourself to lose 28 pounds (that you couldn't spare) before switching to this basic diet or going to a food pantry, but not everyone has enough energy or mental clarity to make the adjustment.
Anyway, to be clear, I'm not saying the government shouldn't help people in this circumstance. On the contrary, I think the country deserves excellent food policy. I'm not a source of advice on what that would be.

1/4 lb of ground beef and 1/2 lb of butter would cost $2 per day in my area. So, a nutritionally complete diet for under $65, yes.
The first question that pops into my mind is "how much does she receive, monthly, in SNAP (food stamps) benefits?" I'd be very surprised if it was as little as she says she spends, $65/month. And if so, what does she do with the rest of it?
Meals on wheels?
Google says "estimated average benefit for a single person being roughly $188 to $204 per month". Since it is, in theory, impossible to buy anything but food with SNAP benefits, why does she try to subsist on $65/month?
…the problem is the abuse of the system no longer has a stigma attached. Fraud is in fact the key plank in one of our major political party’s platform. Guess which party Sharon votes for?
Did they ask Sharon from Minnesota how she feels about illegals in Minnesota collecting public assistance? Dollars to donuts nobody did…
Nobody asked who she voted for, or how much she weighs now, or how much her government benefits amount, to every month. Nor did anybody try to 'trust, but verify' the story. So I guess this is just another example of 'Doncha feel bad about this, How Could They ?? .
Healy blames covid for $364 million in snap payment ‘errors’- there’s your raise Sharon…
Will Minnesota Democrats be willing to give up their Somali illegals scam so that Sharon can afford food? Didn’t think so…
Minnesota...so of course it's Trump's fault.
You can't eat decently on $65 a month, but the $65 is a choice--she "allows herself $65 a month for food." How much money does she really have to work with and where is it going?
Let's see her entire budget and exactly what foods she is buying. Given the demographics of Minnesota and C-SPAN viewers, this could easily be an anti-Trump fake.
For $65, I'd start with $10 of oats, $15 of eggs (one per day), cheese, cabbage, and apples or bananas.
What was her before and after weight? Many people eat too many carbs (bread, soda, juices, potatoes), which put on fat and also lead to craving more carbs. That's also a tiny budget for pre-made meals and processed foods, and it'd last for perhaps 5 or 10 days.
I simply do not believe that someone provably in need does not get at least what they need from the same system that is so easily stolen from by anybody who makes the tiniest effort to try. It can't be both.
"Sharon" doesn't have a friend or relative on the staff of NYT or Wa-Poo, so she called the "open forum" instead.
I can only assume that the specific details missing imply that those details change the narrative substantially.
The #1 health problem in the U.S. is obesity.
This story is fabricated BS.
I have empathy for Sharon
I think you are confused about the meaning of the word "empathy"
The other major part of the problem is the story demonstrates the Life of Julia idea of a comfortable retirement should come from government benefits. Our society, our benefit programs aren’t designed for that. Wanna meet me at the table to start dismantling the crappy benefits and begin designing benefits to achieve that? Didn’t think so…
65 dollars is far too low. Impossible to live on. If you had 1/2 lbs hamburger or Chicken breast a day that over 150 dollars.
You can't eat a balanced diet of supermarket bought food on 2-3 dollars a day. Simply impossible.
Yo Sharon, ask Tampon Tim why Trump is holding back benefits.
But i love how people think. Hey, lets give Ukraine 200 billion to fight a useless war. Hello Israel, do you need another 50 billion? How about giving some billionaires another tax cuts, after all they're doing poorly I hear.
But spending money on food for poor people? OMG, whats this country coming too. stop leaching off the rest of us, you damn poor person. Get a job!
Is it possible for an American to maintain good health while spending $65 a month on food?
Yes, if she's young and gorgeous.
Most people need a pound of red meat and some number of eggs for a healthy diet.
So in the United States no.
The only “cuts” to the food assistance program I know of involves removing young able bodied recipients from the program. She obviously doesn’t fit that catagory. I’m confused.
Democratic redistributive change schemes for profit with collateral damage.
Perhaps not comfy, but comfortable.
In MN the max benefit for snap is $298 per month for a single person, but it is reduced by income. SNAP assumes you can spend 30% of your net income on food, so:
Snap = $298 - 0.30 * net monthly income.
For $65 per month she must have a reasonable income from other sources. Snap is not intended to pay your full food bill if you have other income.
"She only allows herself" maybe she should get help budgeting and find other areas to cut before limiting her food budget.
Note to Ann: ChatGPT agrees $65 is possible but only if she has significant other income.
Minnesota also has three supplemental programs, the most applicable to Sharon is the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) which provides monthly food baskets to needy seniors.
There are multiple food share places near me that give away free food of all kinds. I could live just fine on $0/month.

I think you are confused about the meaning of the word "empathy"
Actually you are and that's not at all surprising given how your side weaponizes it. Empathy is the act of considering how you would feel if you were placed in the situation of another person, exactly what Prof Althouse is doing. But note that is only concerned with imagining what the other person is feeling, and has no connection to direct and concrete action to help the other person, which is sympathy or compassion. This is why 'weaponized empathy' is so destructive because we are easily manipulated into disguising selfish motives as expressions of 'empathy' when they have may have no real impact on the situation as described.
That call was 100% BS. Just Democrat talking points.
Sharon gives her game away when she concludes Trump is the problem…
Christian Avalos told me he doesn’t believe he’ll be able retire in this country, he’s already concerned for his Gen X parents, and anyway, he’s hoping “global warming or water wars will take me out by then.”
Water wars? Start by living in an area where you're allowed to collect your own rainwater. I bet other things would be more affordable then too.
I agree with the others who wonder why Sharon only "allows" herself $65 for food. If I were doing that, it would be because I'm spending all of my food money on my pets.
Yerroner, my client, Mrs. Clinton, testified she never met Mr. Epstein. His statement that she is prettier in person does not falsify that. He could have merely observed her from afar or relied on the statements of others.
Sorry I posted in wrong section and have no can to delete.
NYT publishes news with an appeal to emotion, while sacrificing the facts of the issues in context, and people... persons, too. This is the foundation of progressive prices, where they are an issue, a morbid distraction, cover-up of the forcings.
There are people who have the job of amplifying their employer's political message. Some of them may even have been posting here over the years. Such people see big bandwidth call-in shows as opportunities that are too good to pass up. We've entered an age in which skepticism needs to be the first reaction.
The rest of her SNAP benefit goes to blue hair dye?
Key Methods to Create Blue Hair Dye...
Natural Dye Method (Cornflower):
Simmer dried cornflowers or indigo in water to extract natural, light blue pigment. Add vinegar or sugar to the mixture to enhance vibrancy. Strain the mixture using cheesecloth.
Learing-gate is a liberal and progressive problem for citizens... residents of Minnesota and Democratically-aligned axis interests.
Asking the wrong question, and narrating the wrong solution is a long-lived legacy with conventional roots.
I am not sure that looking at the circumstances of a legally blind 65-year-old who is living on disability is enough to determine that the "fantasy of a comfy retirement has always been a mirage..."
There's a certain irony to this being about a genuine needy woman in a state that is now known for tolerating extremely huge amounts of fraud. But it saddens me to know that the good citizens of this country dutifully pay taxes expecting SNAP benefits etc to go to the right people, and then we learn of truly hurting people screwed by the system while others rob it blind.
I've never heard one responsible DFL member in MN express a desire that the benefits be redirected away from fraudulent fake charity to actual needy citizens. I have heard Tim pass up several opportunities to say something like that.
SNAP — $24 to $298 per month
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) — $0 to $943 per month
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) — $0 to $3,822 per month
Social Security Retirement — $0 to $2,831 per month
Minnesota Supplemental Aid (MSA) — supplement cash assistance — $0 to $300 per month
Medicare Savings Programs (MSP: QMB / SLMB / QI) — premium, deductible and copay assistance — $185 to $349 per month equivalent
Medicare Part D Extra Help (LIS) — Rx plan premium assistance — $0 to $100 per month equivalent
LIHEAP (energy assistance) — $200 to $1,500 per year

TEFAP (USDA food distribution) — $50 to $200 per month equivalent
Senior Nutrition Programs — cooked meals served in community settings — $150 to $300 per month equivalent
Home-Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels type programs) — $150 to $350 per month
The dems make sure illegals get all the tax payer goodies.. harvesting voters for the d costs.
I agree with Ampersand, Curious George, and others upthread who want to be assured that “Sharon from Minnesota” even exists before we consider how to help her.
It is true that I’m January the Trump administration sudpended $129 million in SNAP payments to Minnesota, but why did they do that? Answer: because initial efforts to determine how much fraud was going on in the SNAP program in Minnesota estimated that at least half of the money was being absorbed by fraud. It’s clear to one and all that once the worst of the fraud has been eliminated the money will be restored, so perhaps Sharon from Minnesota — if she exists — might be better advised to put pressure on Governor Walz snd AG Ellison to cooperate with the federal government in eliminating fraud, instead of foot dragging, obstructing, and obfuscating,
She could open a daycare, and then drive her Lamborghini to Whole Foods.
I have to assume that since half the benefits are being stolen in MN, that the Democrats there decided people like Sharon are the problem.
I listened and I think that the lady may have some mental issues. Maybe the "nice" people in MN can help her out.
C-Span call ins are more full of shit than the Dear Penthouse Forum writers

Also note that the alleged 28 pound weight loss occurred mostly during the Biden administration.

No you don't.
There's passion and fear in the woman's voice. The bastards with their anti-Trump hysteria have the old lady scared to death with their lies.

Most Americans are "poor" because of bad spending habits and the inability to defer gratifi- oh look, Sherbert!
Meal on Wheels, or here in NC Feed NC have food delivery programs to supplement people who live in financial distress. Meals on wheels delivers prepared meals, FeedNC has "food movers" who shop the pantry on behalf of each customer according to preferences, restrictions, allergies, etc. Shooping cart deliveries are weekly. People can eat well on that alone, or in this case use the $65 to supplement.
Some of these commenters wonder about the rest of her budget, beyond the $65 she allocates for food. There are people who receive weekly food deliveries, but still budget for a little beer or wine, some cigarettes, and maybe a few lottery tickets.
We have a local food pantry that is funded by donations and grants from businesses and private citizens. The pantry provides more than enough food for the needy in our area. In fact, when the 4H club goes door-to-door to collect canned & dried good donations, the poor are often giving back the same food that the food pantry gave them.
Why can't support be more localized rather than depending on the Federal government? Similarly, this is what Obama care did to health subsidies, eliminating the states' emergency care savings by forbidding them.
I must correct myself. Most of the alleged weight loss occurred before the freeze on SNAP in MN.
For actual context, the caller says that she received $80 per month in SNAP benefits under Biden, and was able to put $100 per month towards food in addition to the SNAP money. She says that under Trump, the price of electricity and gas is so high that she allows herself only $65 per month towards food (to go along with the SNAP benefit). She further says that her SNAP benefit was cut to $24 per month and then down to $12.50, at which point she said "screw you, I ain't doing that no more" and apparently decided to forgo SNAP benefits altogether. She also says that due to her blindness, she can't drive down to the food pantry for assistance.
Now of course much of what she alleges doesn't really add up. The price of gas and electricity is down since Biden, as is the price of most groceries. She provides no rational basis for deciding to forgo benefits altogether. According to Google AI (yeah, I know) the average daily SNAP benefit after the cuts brought about by the Big Beautiful Bill and an attempt (since enjoined by a Federal Court) to further freeze Minnesota SNAP funding over the widespread fraud was still $5 per day per person, which would be $150 per month - not sure how she got to $12.50. The minimum monthly benefit in Minnesota is $23 per month, so again, not sure how she got to $12.50
Also of course, she could be entirely gas-lighting and making this up, there is no way to verify any of this.
This article could have been written any time in the last 80 years (before that, there would have been no government assistance to whine about). But it was written, and published, today. In the New York Times. I wonder why.
When I was listening to her story I was like Jerry Seinfeld hearing about the Bubble Boy.
https://www.instagram.com/reels/DMa7jlHP2Kg/
How do we know Sharon isn't a Nigerian Prince, or a Walz staffer?
The price of gas and electricity is down since Biden, as is the price of most groceries.
This is simply untrue. The cost of both gas (and I assume she is talking about natural gas since she doesn't drive) and electric is up. Very few things, in spite of Trump's statement that prices would start to fall on day one, are cheaper than they were under Biden. Inflation (which is averaging about 2.5%) remains stubbornly above the 2% goal the Fed aims for.
But CG what about the blindness, the desperation, the hunger, the pain?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x1mB0ykFu8&t
Just over 18 months ago she could have used her last money to get to Mexico, then walked across the border and received a place to live, a stipend for whatevers, and health care. Her problem is that she's an American citizen.
Also, not to state the obvious, but she needed to work on getting closer to the Somali community in Minnesota. They hold and dole out the money for that state.
The story just doesn't add up. If she is blind and on SSDI, she has to be at the top end of the benefit in order to not be eligible for the regular SNAP allocation.
1: What kind of idiot "planned" for a retirement of $2 / day for food?
2: "Because of Trump administration cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program"
Really? Which of those cuts affect 65 year old disabled American citizens? I'll wait
3: "the high cost of groceries, gas and electricity"
Thanks Dems!
Snap = $298 - 0.30 * net monthly income
If her SNAP was $24 ->
0.30 * net monthly income = 274 -> needs a monthly "net income" of > $900 / month
What's that "net" of? And what's she spending the other $860 / month on? If it's heating her place, she must be living in something big
4: "I'm blind and can' drive to get things"
There's a whole bunch of programs for providing assistance for that. Of course, the MN Dems are spending all the money of that on Somali fraud, so that might be her problem
5: Hell yes gas prices were down in MN last year post Trump taking over
There are private food banks throughout the Twin Cities so this doesn’t make much sense to me.
Freder: "The cost of both gas (and I assume she is talking about natural gas since she doesn't drive) and electric is up. "
Hey Freder, how ya been? I see you're still wrong...

As I and others have pointed out, between daily Meals on Wheels prepared meals and the "Food Mover" weekly grocery delivery programs at local pantrys, she can eat well and pocket the $65/month or use it for supplemental groceries not on the pantry shelf. Our local pantry has all one needs to eat well, but might no always have, say, Keurig coffee pods on any given week.
A lot missing from this story. Trump didn't cut SNAP for people with image presented here.
I have a sister in Wisconsin that gets disability, SNAP, meals on wheels and food pantry deliveries (she doesn’t even have to go there!)
She comments frequently that she has leftovers from her meals on wheels lunches and that her food pantry deliveries are always more than she needs. Along with SNAP she spends more than $65 on food.
This woman is a liar.
Yes, Trump didn't cut SNAP for anyone except ABLE-BODIED adults 18-64 who refused to show they volunteered or got a job.
Since this person is BLIND they are DISABLED.
Complete bullshit.
When in college i ate the following to lose 30 lbs.
1 Can Tuna or Chicken
1 Cup milk
3 Ounces Cheese
1 orange and 2 Pears/apples
1 Cup cereal.
Even today that might be 65 dollars a month.
Perhaps she could improve her lot substantially with a perm and a bit o’ shoe polish.
Minnesota… just sayin’…
In order to save the planet, Democrats say we should use less energy (gas/electric) but if prices go up, causing people to use less, they bitch about it (as long as a Democrat is not in charge, that is).
Curious.
You can get pork shoulder for about $2.50/lb at the local Cermak. Add a side of rice, beans, or potatoes and a veggie and it's 1400 Calories, with 90–95 g protein, 50–55 g carbs, and 3–5 g fiber. That's about $4. Granted, that would get old every day, and that meal x30 would cost about $120 per month, but I bet she doesn't need to eat a pound of meat per day. Throw in some beans or lentils and oats from breakfast some peanut butter for toast for lunch, and that should be OK for most people on a food budget.
You can also buy the soon to be expiring milk for $1/gallon. I do, and I'm not even in dire straits.
Or she could open a Somali day care and rake in millions.

An 87 year old relative gets all her news from TV and newspaper. She is intelligent but mis-informed. Actually frightened that Trump wants to rule the world.
If her husband were still alive, she might think Trump is one of the best presidents ever. Media has turned many people into fanatic haters, and frightened many more.
SNAP benefits are $289/month for a single disabled adult.
Full Moon, I kinda like the idea of Trump ruling the world!
Operation Epstein Fury will surly help Americans buy groceries more cheaply?
..Sharon only allows herself $65 a month for food..
sounds better, until you realize;
that Sharon allows herself $2000 a month for drugs and alcohol
But; it's TRUE,
IF you sell your SNAP benifits, you can't use them yourself
This should not need to be said: never trust the NYT reporting on what some anonymous woman (how do they know?) with quivering voice says about how bad the current government has made life in America.
And yet this is posted in the 'opinion' section of the NYT. So, not facts but opinions.
If Sharon had been allowed to invest her future SS benefits in a 401K-type plan (as I seem to recall GWB and those evil Republicans proposing way back when) she'd be doing OK. What was the NYT position on that? No, let me guess. I suspect it would be something on the lines of "Welfare for the rich! The corporatization of Social Security! Boondoggle for Wall Street!"
Also where I live you can buy 30 eggs for $7.00. Even at the "high-end" Harris Teeter.

Seriously People; please READ the assignments,
Sharon only allows herself $65 a month for food..
NO WHERE in the article does it even imply that she only receives $65 a month for food; that is what she "allows herself";
the rest of the benifit she is selling for crack.
Sharon lost 28 pounds in the last year..
a) how much did she weigh last year? 240? 280?
b) WHY should we think that she lost ANY? 'cause she said?
c) HOW MUCH was because of the crack?
I sense learned helplessness plus lack of outreach on the part of local services. Having assisted my elderly parents in their later years, it can be a hassle to navigate any helping system, but even then there are probably volunteers and advocates that will help. Our local hospital/healthcare system has an amazing financial assistance program. I am constantly telling people about it when they complain about healthcare costs, but "filling out an application and providing evidence of income is just tooooooo hard" is a common response.
the rest of the benifit she is selling for crack.
Gee, somehow, I missed that in the article.

Easy-peasy. You trot out this poor woman. Declare there are thousands upon thousands in a similar plight. Appropriate an ungawdly amount of money from tax payers (borrowed, of course). Then, without effective oversight you spread the money around to NGOs, consultants, fraudsters and other politicians of your party.
No need to see if the money was well spent. No need to see what percentage, if any, actually made it to the hungry citizens.

Here's how I asked the question to Grok: "An American woman, retired, claims to spend only $65 a month on food. Let's assume she's not lying and that she eats enough and eats healthful, wholesome food. Make a 1-month shopping list for her."
I got an itemized shopping list, showing prices adding up to $60 to $68:
10 lb bag white or brown rice: ~$6–8 (bulk, main calorie source)
5–6 lb rolled oats (old-fashioned): ~$5–7 (breakfast + can add to other dishes)
4 lb dry beans (e.g., pinto, black, or kidney – buy in bulk bags): ~$5–7
2–3 lb dry lentils: ~$3–5 (quick-cooking protein)
5–6 dozen eggs (large, conventional – prices down significantly in 2026): ~$12–16 (versatile, nutrient-dense; ~2–3 eggs/day possible)
Vegetables (focus on cheap, long-lasting) 20 lb potatoes (russet or white): ~$6–9 (filling base for many meals)
2 large heads cabbage (~10–15 lb total): ~$4–6 (shred for stir-fries, soups, salads)
5–6 lb carrots: ~$4–6 (raw, steamed, in soups)
5–6 lb onions (yellow or white): ~$4–6 (flavor base for everything)
Fruit (minimal but for vitamins) 10–15 lb apples or bananas (whatever is cheapest/seasonal): ~$6–9 (2–3 pieces/day; apples store longer)
Other Small bottle cooking oil (if needed, 16–32 oz): ~$2–3
Basic spices/salt (if restocking tiny amounts): ~$1–2
That’s interesting Grok. My Publix has regular sales and bogos, too. Coupons come find your mailbox and inbox….

Such a thing has never happened when a Democrat holds the top job. The homeless and starving somehow vanish for four years, only to instantly reappear in greater numbers when a Republican gets back in.
I'll bet it didn't even happen back when people were eating boiled shoe leather in the Great Depression, unless you count the contrast with Walter Duranty's confabulations from the Soviet Union claiming a cornucopia of abundance under Communism.

No food banks in the area? No relatives to help you? No neighbors? And since cutting SNAP stopped in Jan, which post dates her weight loss, maybe there is another problem.
You are all missing the point. Why, in the richest country and greatest civilization of all time (as you are all constantly reminding me) are we even consider it acceptable to have anyone eating a diet worse than your average serf in the 12th Century?
Honestly trying to understand here…. If an older person has only a modest income, I have no problem with that person qualifying for some free food.
Does the article explain if this woman does get any SNAP, etc.?
If she doesn’t, was she getting them before Trump “cut the benefits?” What does Trump have to do with any of this?
If she gets SNAP, does she only get $65 dollars worth?
