That's because the Democrat Party finances depend on staggering levels of fraud, with hundreds of millions of pilfered taxpayer dollars funneled to their cronies and operatives and kicked back into Party coffers.

The 'Billionaire's tax' is a scheme that is already here, and already well-estalished in many states. It's called property tax, if it's applied to real estate. Then there's an excise tax, if it's property - like your car, or your boat, anything of tangible value. My first car was twice my age when I first drove it, but I was still paying excise tax on it, every year, in Massachusetts. That's why John Kerry, that prick, moored his yacht in Connecticut, to avoid the excise tax. Estate taxes, same. A tax on investment holdings essentially just expands the concept, and it will be sold that way.

Now, the government wants to tax the rest of it so they'll need to come to your house and root around through your stuff to make sure you reported all of it and estimated its value correctly.

Property tax in an interesting subject. There are a few, a very few, jurisdictions in the USA that have what I call real property tax. Your property is taxed. Just the property. The tax for a 1/4 acre lot is 25% of the tax of a 1 acre lot. Doesn't matter if you put a million dollar house on or live in a tent.

I think that's eminently fair. And- it encourages smart land use.

Whenever I bring this idea up to most people- IT'S OUTRAGEOUS! Why? Because then the rich aren't paying enough. Yes, it's jealousy rearing it's ugly head.

Just like with the proposed new wealth taxes. Nothing more then jealously and wanting to punish the successful.

One thing about taxing just the property held- does away with assessment values. All land is taxed the same. In my area that means a lot of swamp land would probably be ceded back to the towns and villages. Except for people who wanted to retain exclusive hunting/fishing/trapping rights in the swamps.

But then where I live now explaining how my volunteer fire district in SC worked is considered almost blasphemous. The VFD came around and told you your expected donation- and you wrote a check for it. If you didn't, and your abode caught fire, they'd rescue people within, then watch the house burn down. No paying after the fact. Basically fire insurance. And if you did have a structure fire insurance policy in a VFD area, and failed to donate, your insurance was null and void. Here, you lose your house if you fail to pay the fire district tax. TBH, I don't know if the fire district tax is set by property, or by assessed value. I'll have to look into that...

@Howard on painting countries into a corner over Gulf oil.

This is not 1973. This is not 1973. This is not 1973. There are now oil producers all over the world. OPEC is no longer an effective cartel. There is better oil extraction tech ("fracking"). The green push mitigated the need for oil, and it now allows the use of electricity for many things. While not "green," nuclear or coal power might fill the gap when the greenies start to freeze their toes off. Coal is very very very cheap and abundant. The Hormuz issue follows lazy efforts to pacify Iran and not bothering to build true workarounds (e.g., pipelines).

@Howard on Rock the Casbah --

The Clash held that the song was about partying "rocking" with Middle Eastern citizens in opposition to militant and violent leaders. This does fit with the nuclear freeze, pacifist, anti-Vietnam ideological tone of the late 1970s and early 1980s. It also fits with The Clash's socialist/communist sympathies. But yeah, it's hard to take it seriously.

The Persian gulf islands are ideal targets for occupation as they cant be reinforced by Iran through infiltration, they have minimal civilian populations making guerilla warfare useless, and they are out of range of artillery bombardment from the mainland - or they will require the sort of artillery that is completely vulnerable to airstrikes. They negate all of the IRGC manpower advantages.
I dont see the point of taking Kharg island as the US can simply seize every tanker that loads there. But I guess it might be symbolic. Kharg is important because it is one place close to Khuzestan with sufficiently deep water to load VLCC's, the rest of the coast is too shallow.
Iranian petroleum and natgas mainly comes from flat Khuzestan province and offshore. The vast bulk of Iran produces nothing.
The Gulf or Hormuz islands would be useful to monitor boat traffic and to prevent their use as staging points for boats and antiship missiles. Queshm island allegedly has an extensive tunnel system for exactly this.

I have a question: Did the Pentagon study Operation Spiderweb—the Ukrainian strike that destroyed a significant portion of Russian strategic aviation last year—and conclude, 'Nah, we're good'? Are we really planning to keep our planes parked in the open, within easy reach of adversaries, because we assume we have nothing to learn from the Ukrainians… and that our adversaries must feel the same way?

And yes — Iran possesses precision missile capabilities that are orders of magnitude more advanced than Ukraine’s.

“ He talks about painting OPEC, Russia and China into a corner. Nothing is more dangerous than cornered rats with nuclear weapons and a region known for suicidal bombers.”

Russia is easy. Trump just pulls on Zelenskyy‘s leash. Which he did this week. Trump told Zelenskyy that if wants to get any sort of mutual protection pact, he needs to give Russia something. While Putin may not like what the US is doing in Iran, he is a lot more upset about what the Ukrainians are doing to Mother Russia. This week, they hit Russia hard, far from their borders.

China is a bit harder to mollify. When things get tight, Trump calls Xi his “good friend”. Flattering China and its leader does work. Right now, it looks like China is reeling, with the two countries supplying it oil (at a discount) taken out or sidelined by the US. And a lot of China’s perfidy in business has been called out - further stressing the country’s economy. So, their natural response is to sit back and wait it out. They play the long game, and are unlikely to do something stupid (like Russia did with Ukraine). Or seriously test Trump. And in fewer than three years he will be gone.

OPEC needs to recognize the reality that the US is now a major oil power. THE oil power in the world, esp with Venezuela under our thumb and Iran’s oil sales under our control. The Arab oil producers have mostly enthusiastically jumped into the Iran conflict, on our side. And, if it turns out that Iran’s oil spigot is closed for awhile, more money for them. Esp since they are Sunni, and the Iranians are apostate Shi’a. That rivalry (Arab v Persia) goes back a millennium or so. The Saudi’s new pipeline bypassing the Straight of Hormuz is ramping up significantly faster than expected.

Sure. The DEI and TDS infected officers were pushed aside. And replaced by the ones who could, and would fight. The idiots who so badly bungled our withdrawal from Afghanistan are gone. And most here, at least, would consider that a very good thing.

I very much disagree with your implied suggestion that the fired officers would have learned more about drone warfare than their replacements. They were far more focused on all the wrong things, such DEI and the transgendered than on the ability to fight and win wars. And part of winning wars is the rapid adaption of useful new technologies. Rapid adoption of cheap drone technology is a high priority with the Hegseth DOD/DOW. It would be almost ignored by the formerly woke Biden DOD. Instead of being fast tracked through the procurement process, contracts would be studied to death, and finally given to the best DEI credentialed firms, with the strongest ties to the Dem party coffers.

Good luck with that.

As if Russia didn’t need them as desperately. Esp after last week, when Ukraine struck deep into Russia with their own drones (which we have access to). We don’t need to degrade Russian drone manufacturing - Ukraine is doing it for us.

Moreover, they aren’t that hard to take out from the air. And we do have complete air supremacy over Iran. We just need to know where they are. Which we most often do, from circling AWACS, satellites, etc. Space Force has shown its worth in the Iran conflict - esp when it comes to eliminating almost all of Iran’s missiles and missile launches.

And, no, Iran cant hide where the drones come in from, nor where they are going from there. Which means that it is significantly more likely that drones will be taken out before they can arrive at their destination, than can actually be launched.

Oh, BTW, even though Shahed drones are an Iranian design, domestic production has been mostly shut down by now - hence the need for Russian drones.
