"You've gotta learn to get more pleasure!"

A Super Bowl ad for a product called...
... Jesus.

Discovered via "The Super Bowl Ads (So Far), Ranked/Here is our critic’s survey of this year’s Super Bowl commercials, from best to worst to A.I." (NYT)(gift link, in case you want to see where everything is ranked (the ad for Christianity is ranked #4... out of 32).

Maybe the only thing I DO need more of.

That ad is very effective. I think younger folks especially have a widespread, not necessarily prominent but persistent unease with fakeness, hence the desire for authenticity. Materialism and having a Hedonic focus in life probably feel like they fall in that fakeness camp.

That little girl in the beginning has Jon-Benet Ramsey vibes.

Kind of ironic that I have to “Click for more” to read the rest of this Althouse post.

I generally don’t like those He Gets Us ads. I would rate this one as just OK. Too much time setting up the premise and not enough on the payoff.

Aggie ayon kay ...

Reminds me yet again of Koyaanisqatsi. That film had a huge impact on how our modern world is protrayed.

Aggie ayon kay ...

In case anyone is interested: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9tttde. From 1982, music by Philip Glass.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

Ironically, the worst-rated ad on that list also follows the same premise of a lot of shots of glorying in what you can buy with excessive wealth as you wait to see what they are really selling. The ad is titled "Rich People Live Longer" and the product, you eventually learn, is telehealth services.

Temujin ayon kay ...

I thought it was great. Just as I got to the point of 'Enough already!- it shifted to peace in the natural world. Very effective.

If it wasn't obvious lots of peoples' dopamine receptors are completely shot, it should be now.

Yes, too much focus on choice itself being the problem rather than a solution.

Spiros ayon kay ...

This stuff is pure consumerism. You get the feeling that Jesus is a charismatic cult leader who's okay with your relentless pursuit of material goods.

No wonder young men are turn to the Greek Orthodox Church. Our version of Christianity is not an attractive product to be desired and consumed -- it's rather unpleasant. But, at least, we believe that Christianity is a profound and transformative faith.

baghdadbob ayon kay ...

Maybe SSRIs would help.

RideSpaceMountain ayon kay ...

"No wonder young men are turn to the Greek Orthodox Church."

Is that the group that mutilates squirrels?

Quaestor ayon kay ...

42 years ago Apple promised us mind-numbed drones liberation and a delivered a computer that could do literally nothing... well, almost nothing, thus setting the expectation bar lower than ground-level for Super Bowl advertising, the highest price for the shortest access to the dullest minds with the thickest wallets.

This year, Jesus of Nazareth ranks 4th, just behind fried potato gruel and well ahead of mayonnaise -- impressive for a savior with no ranking at all just one year ago.

Howard ayon kay ...

At first I thought it was an ad for the national Park system. I like the way they suck you into Jesus using the general appeal of pagan nature worship.

Howard ayon kay ...

An answer to their question, yes more is better. In fact, the conclusion of the ad for Jesus indicates that the eternal and the infinite are better than the limited. Temporal glittering bullshit of modern Life.

Quaestor ayon kay ...

"That little girl in the beginning has Jon-Benet Ramsey vibes."

Vibes? More like Richter Scale tremors.

Jersey Fled ayon kay ...

Nicely said, Howard.

"No wonder young men are turn to the Greek Orthodox Church."

I thought it was for the hats.

The beards are nice, too.

mccullough ayon kay ...

So which Billy Graham charlatan makes money if the Jesus product & service?

"Lazarus said...

Nice George Costanza reference there, Lazarus!

William ayon kay ...

I don't mean this as a knock to religion, but some people turn to God and find the Rev. Jones......One should approach God as a cautious consumer. A lot of the franchises are poorly managed.

“A Super Bowl ad for a product called...

Would work just as well for a product called…
…Muhammad.

Another idea for an AD - mock and ridicule reddit leftists and their insane rage... that leads them to dark places where they plan to kill people like Charlie Kirk. Just for ... his words, thoughts, ideas..

Mark ayon kay ...

I see why it's ranked 4th. Even if you don't come to Jesus, this strikes a cord. Spread the Word.

Peachy ayon kay ...

If all the religions want to make ads- they can.

buwaya ayon kay ...

The Mac was able to do everything the original IBM PC could (almost) upon its release. The PC had an IBM terminal board almost from the beginning, which was nice, it was an intelligent terminal for mainframes.

PM ayon kay ...

Was surprised to see the religious ending - thought the last shot of hiking 'more' - an xlnt thought - was the whole point. But I never argue w/Jesus.

john mosby ayon kay ...

Pleasure. JC came that we might have life, and have it to the full.

He should steal the Newport tagline: JC- Alive With Pleasure! CC, JSM

Political Junkie ayon kay ...

Knew the critics would not place a Christianity ad #1. Fuck em. Or I spite them!

Sofa King ayon kay ...

Would have been more effective without the musical sting at the end IMO

bagoh20 ayon kay ...

That product has been knocked off a lot with inferior quality copies. They should have gotten a patent. You can't judge the quality by the price with this one.

Earnest Prole ayon kay ...

When I read “Is there more to life than more?” it reminded me of Trump’s tariffs pitch that henceforth American children would have two dolls instead of thirty.

Bob Boyd ayon kay ...

@ Ride Space Mountain

A squirrel walks into a Greek Orthodox Church.
The priest says, "Oh look! A squirrel!"

Caroline ayon kay ...

That blew my mind. I really didn’t see that coming. Powerful.

Bob Boyd ayon kay ...

@ Caroline

I can only assume you're referring to my squirrel joke.

Narr ayon kay ...

"Is there more to life than more?"

I've always thought so, which is not to deny that there's more to life than less, for sure.

Rustygrommet ayon kay ...

I don't want more. I want better.

Smilin' Jack ayon kay ...

"Is there more to life than more?"

If there is, wanting it would be an antinomy.
