You know what the difference is between the Biden family business and the Trump family business? You’d have to add two digits to the sum of Biden abuses of power, foreign entanglements, and corruption alleged in the report to get near what Trump has raked in just from the UAE.
Of course, Trump can’t be faulted for obstructing congressional investigations. There haven’t been any. Yeah but then you got bored, gave up and went upstairs. Just before another touchdown that you probably didn’t make happen. Better come back. Game’s not over.
There is clearly no conflict of interest here or in any of Trump's business deals, domestic or international. His interest is completely focused on two things: his wealth and staying out of prison. I see no sign that those two goals ever come into conflict.
I also take credit for the interception because after that second touchdown, I went and did some other things that and even checked over to see what was going on with the Olympics came back as soon as I started watching there was the interception.
Actually I didn’t get bored. I didn’t watch long enough to get bored. I looked up and for some reason, decided to stare at the thing for a few seconds, and there was a touchdown. Feeling satisfied that I had caused the touchdown. I immediately stopped watching because I had my satisfaction of finally getting a touchdown in the game. Then I went upstairs not because I was bored but because I was sleepy. I want to be where I can fall asleep.
"Clyde said... I was listening to some KT Tunstall music today and read on Wikipedia that she had done a cover of The Knack's "My Sharona." Found it on YouTube!" Every time I hear that song now, I think of Reality Bites scene at gas station. great song, great cover. Hope Meade has some $ on the game, sounds like Ann has got the system down
KT Tunstall's debut album Eye to the Telescope was re-issued last December in a 20th anniversary "Stargazer Edition," with bonus tracks. I finally got around to listening to it today. Her second album, Drastic Fantastic, is my favorite. There's an Ultimate Edition that not only has the original ten songs, but five more studio songs that didn't make the album, live tracks and remixes, and then at the end, instrumental versions of eight of the ten original songs. They're really interesting to listen to, because while I love her vocals, it's cool to see the musical scaffolding that they are hung on.
"...I'm beginning to smell some rats milling around the Nancy Guthrie abduction case. ...."
My wife puts the TV on to Fox News with fairly high volume, so I get it as background noise. What's the fascination? The coverage has been non-stop, and since there is virtually no information forthcoming, it's been a pageant of non-stop expert speculation on what might be going on, with lots of examples of what happens elsewhere. It's ridiculous. Who is this person? It's like the kid that fell into the abandoned water well. There's no real news happening, apparently, so the entire machine has been deployed on this disappearance, saturating the airwaves with it. If something important happened in the world, they wouldn't be able to cover it - they're too wrapped up in this little saga.
The NFL wants to expand and have teams outside of the US. Teams in Central and South America, and Mexico, make the most sense. They share U.S. time zones so are much easier to fit into the TV model. Hence Bad Bunny.
I want to express my appreciation to whoever convinced the trolls to post AI-generated copy-pasta walls of text. It makes them so much easier to skip. It's a challenge to not read short comments because by the time you've registered the name, you've polluted your mind with the comment. But big blocks of text jump right out at you. Please keep it up. Remember, longer=more convincing.
Kakistocracy said... "Trump's interest is completely focused on two things: his wealth and staying out of prison."
That's a neat trick, lemme try. Kakistocracy's interest is completely focused on two things: molesting the preacher's wife and skimming from the orphan fund.
Such an uneven Super Bowl game. All D until well into 2nd half. I’m bummed the Pats lost but they had an amazing year nonetheless. Congrats to the Seahawks. They were the better team.
At the Madison airport, which has had a big, beautiful renovation. Outside Gate 15 is a BIG topo map of the Madison lakes and Yahara drainage basin incorporated into the floor. Meadhouse would enjoy it.
Aggie: "What's the fascination?" [with the Guthrie kidnapping]
It's an intrusion of reality into the journalist bubble. This sort of thing is not supposed to happen to newsies and their families. Even Fox News, whom Savannah Guthrie sees as something to step in and scrape off, can't help but be morbidly fascinated. CC, JSM
We decided after halftime to watch some of the game on the big screen. It was something we always thought we would do. I’ve seen SEC games with better production. We turned it off after the second TD. It was obvious who the better team was by then and I got work to do today.
The NFL has a poor product made worse by NBC, made even worse by electing to hold the game in San Francisco. California sensibility is to have a commercial for Scream LX after a Charlie Pugh National Anthem. If that is the pageantry they have to offer, then I’ll give it the attention it deserves.
The TPUSA Halftime wasn’t great either. We watched it over Bad Bunny. It deserves better praise than that, but there is other ways to show pride in America. The tribute to Charlie Kirk at the end was the best part, and I think it is because he showed an honor to be an American, which was lacking last night.
Clyde said... “Maybe next year the NFL can have their halftime performer sing in another language that most Americans don't speak, like Somalian or Haitian.”
Not sure how the NFL owners came up with Roger Goodell as their commish, but his dad was a U.S. Senator, which could explain part of it. NFL ratings are sky high in spite of him. From praising Kaepernick/ BLM to a Spanish halftime show …. good grief what’s next? Tranny surgery on big screen?
For twenty years I lived on a good sized lake that froze over in the winter, and after a while you begin to think of the ice as a high speed version of continental drift.
Probably what happened is the whole ice sheet got pushed south by that powerful NW wind we had, and that left open ice for the wind to push the sheet back north.
People say that high speed computers negate stealth, that for example, F-35s have an echo that mixes with noise, that is down in the mud of the signal to noise ratio, but that it had direction, and if you have enough computational power, you can examine *all* of these "noise artifacts" and if you see one that has direction, is flying at 100s of miles per hour, is coming toward you, well you can strongly infer that you are seeing an F-35 incoming. AI will help with this a lot.
Also, the broad flat bottom of a stealth bomber reflects cell phone tower signals, TV broadcast signals, etc, sure, you can't target a missile with that information, but it gives you a passive early warning that can't be taken out with HARM missiles.
We have made a huge bet on stealth, other great powers have bet on missiles, which are far cheaper than F-35s, unmanned, expendable, and the price of a missile is comparable to the cost of a mission with an F-35, cheaper, probably, than a B2.
You would think too that the tankers would be vulnerable, and that aircraft carriers would be vulnerable to attack by saturation attacks, or maneuverable hypersonic missiles which are protected from radar detection by the plasma envelope.
So here we go. Let's see if this is all nonsense, or if we have bet trillions on obsolete tech. If Trump OKs bombing Iran it will be an interesting test of these theories which are all out there. Not sure it would be the same as an attack on China or Russia directly, since Iran's home grown air defenses were pummeled in the 12 day war, and real layered air defense takes more than a few months to build. Still it will be an interesting test that I hope we don't undertake.
The English had a formidable weapon up to the Hundred Years war, the longbow, that other armies had no answer for, this is why the English carried the day at Agincourt when they were greatly outnumbered. Phalanxes of archers with longbows evened up the odds pretty quickly.
Well, then Joan of Arc showed up, who not only rallied the French, but she had this new weapon that the French adopted, called "artillery" and the English burned her at the stake, but it was too late, the French now knew that they could win with their artillery, and they won their independence, and the English longbows were no longer an effective weapon.
One other thing, then I will shut up, Russia and China cannot afford to let Iran fall, because then the Caucuses will be next part of the word that the US sets aflame.
Dune was based on the wars in the Caucasus between the Persian and Russian empires. These will look picnic games compared to what will happen on Russia's and China's border if we take control of Iran.
That's the thing, over time, they have to, it's physics, what makes them stealth is that they hide in noise, but non-random noise is ultimately coherent, if you have the processing power.
But I am just reporting observations of what people are saying about the coming strike, and US weapons in general, I think that we are saturated with lies, and all that we on the sidelines can do is note what people say, and wait for events to unfold, so note what I said, and wait. We can't settle this here.
Trump judged the Bad Bunny performance to be an “absolutely terrible” show.
Whether you like his music or not, you can't argue that it was an intelligent and dazzling performance which managed to pack a dozen scenes into the center of the field. Had it been a country artist singing of his love of Texas, nobody would have batted an eyelid. Only someone who hates America could have a problem with a performance that showcased an often-overlooked part of the country with patriotism and pride.
Knocking such a well coordinated and flawlessly performed spectacle says volumes more about the critic than the quality of the content. Maybe somebody really wanted them portrayed as APES. Hard to say.
Clyde opines: "I'm sure that Bad Bunny would have been a fine choice for a futbol or beisbol game, though."
It's simple and same cause. Each has exhausted their existing demographic and is widening into others.
600 million Spanish speakers, including 60 million in the US, are a huge economic and cultural powerhouse (the third largest economic bloc and the second largest community of native speakers in theworld). The NFL is not ignorant. It has simply identified a trend the likes of Trump and MAGA cannot stop.
One thing that I noticed in my household is that Bad Bunny drew in people who don't like football. I guess that that was the point. But of the three people at my house who only watched to see him, well, they were done watching as soon as his performance was over; time will tell how it works out.
My husband and I were out and about on Thursday and got sucked in to a local brewery (owned by an Australian) that was showing the first game of the Six Nations... tournament? Anyway, rugby thingy, that's going to continue for the next four weeks. Neither of us had ever watched rugby; we stayed for the whole match. WAY more fun to watch than soccer OR football.
Trump bombed Iran last year. I’m not aware of major technological advances made in the past year in IAD. I don’t really care to get in a knowledge pissing contest on this, but calling something a theory when it was put in practice a year ago is a silly argument. I don’t care because while the issue is important; I’m happy enough with it simply not being managed through appeasement, as it was by the previous administration.
Houston has a professional rugby team. A friend of mine is the personal pilot for the owner of the team. Agree, it is a much more interesting sport. Cricket is interesting too, but the matches are far too long.
I want to thank Kak, the NFL, and Senor Bad Bunny for showing us how much greater (and more FUN!) America would be if we would just let in more people who spend their time drinking, dancing, and watching their women do synchronized butt-shaking instead of inventing new medicines, AI, and rockets to other planets.
Wait...so how come they all want to come here instead of stay there?
One of the great things about international rugby is the anthems. No kneeling. On the contrary: the lads put their arms around each other and joyfully belt out the song. Unless they’re crying. And it’s usually the toughest guys, with broken nose and cauliflower ears, who blubber the most.
And it’s not racist. In the age of professionalism, the national teams are very diverse. Some countries are less than half indigenous. The captain of England is black. France has lots of guys from the overseas departments. But everyone is proud to play for his country.
Now if only they’ll let England sing Jerusalem instead of God Save The King. CC, JSM
"I’m not aware of major technological advances made in the past year in IAD"
they signed a mutual defense treaty with Russia, last time it was home grown stuff, and the attack came when they were in negotiations, and killed the negotiators, which is a tactic that can't be repeated. Also Israel had commandos on the ground who took out early warning radars with drones. These tactics are going to be hard to repeat.
One thing that is pressuring Trump to act is that it takes time to set up a modern air defense system, it takes probably a year or two to train up on Russia's latest stuff, who knows what they are getting from China.
Both Russia and China lose big if Iran falls. Russia knows that they are fighting for their lives, and if they give targeting data to the Iranians? Well, we are giving Ukraine targeting data inside of Russia. I think that Russia and China know that this is an existential fight, the final showdown, and China? Who can say?
One thing that is really funny is that Scott Bissent has bragged about our attack on Iran's currency, which caused the riots in the first place, by seriously damaging Iran's economy. Bissent learned his trade working for George Soros. I bolded that for Peachy.
Investing career Early and SFM work After college, Bessent worked at Brown Brothers Harriman,[9][4][23] at the Riyadh-based company Olayan Group,[9][4] and then at the hedge fund Kynikos Associates, under Jim Chanos.[9][4][23] In Business Insider, Julia La Roche connected Bessent's work with Chanos to his eventual opportunity at Soros Fund Management (SFM), noting that George Soros was a major Chanos client.[9] In the Yale Daily News, Asher Boiskin suggested Soros himself recruited Bessent.[23] In 1992, Bessent was a leading member of the SFM team whose bet on the Black Wednesday collapse of the British Pound sterling earned the firm over $1 billion.[9][24][25][26] Some sources, such as Forbes, call Bessent a "protégé" of Soros.[27][16] - Wikipedia.
"Ghislaine Maxwell played a substantial role in supporting the creation of the Clinton Global Initiative, one of Bill Clinton’s signature post-White House endeavors, documents show."
In a curious way, I am enjoying the homogeneity of many of the Olympic teams. Watching the Japanese skating team, for example. They look. … Japanese! They are Japanese! They have a long and storied cultural heritage that they all understand and share. Their friends and their kids will also look like them. I am completely over multi culturalism.
I was almost asleep last night about 11 when I got a text. A text late Sunday night is unusual so I checked it--
From TPUSA urging me to watch their Kid Rock schlock rather than the Bad Bunny twerkfest.
As if.
Sending me a text about something I have no interest in, hours after the event has concluded, and including a plea for money, is no way to get my support.
Culture wars are all well and good but if the alternate Super Bowl show organized by Turning Point could only muster Kid Rock (amusingly now 55 and - emm - slightly predictable), then the musical side of the culture war is pretty done.

Jaq You're assuming that they,(US Air Force) don't know about and haven't/ aren't doing something about it. They managed to make all of the Venezuelan air defenses inoperable. Including their state of the art Chinese missile system. Nobody knew they were coming. Nobody knew they were there. Until they were.
Tuned in to watch the Bunny man. First of all, the staging was great. Whoever designed the show deserves accolades. However, the singing and music were awful. The dude seemed to be ripping off David Byrne with the big suit routine. The crotch grabbing and grunting was dumb. Performing it in a foreign language probably made it even more boring. If you’re going to be controversial you should at least try to be interesting.
"You're assuming that they,(US Air Force) don't know about and haven't/ aren't doing something about it."
I am not assuming anything. I don't believe anything I read about future potential wars and assume that everything is probably propaganda. What I do do is look at what people say, and then compare them to what happens, and adjust my weights on their point of view accordingly.
"They managed to make all of the Venezuelan air defenses inoperable"
That is possibly true, they had outdated S-300 systems, and it also isn't hard to imagine that bribes came into play. I don't believe that Venezuela proves anything. For one thing, it would have been very difficult for Russia or China to get modern equipment deployed there, Iran is connected to Russia by the Caspian Sea where the US Navy does not operate. You can't get to it from the high seas except by a canal through Russia and the only nations allowed to operate there, by international treaty, are Those states are: Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan.
We regime changed Azerbaijan, but if they seize a Russian flagged ship, they are going to be the next Ukraine, but without a way for NATO to help them and without the largest army in Europe, not counting Russia. China also has a land route to Iran.
Apples and oranges. China and Russia don't have the power to really help Venezuela in a significant way.
Like I said, you take note of what people say, and when stuff actually happens, you adjust your weights.
At first I thought that Trump would back off, but Iran is not offering any face saving ways out of this for Trump, or the US. None. So now I think he might do it. But flip a coin, I don't know.
"I took him to most of his games and cheered, but in truth I had no better idea of the rules at the end of the season than I had at the beginning."
Rules?!? In rugby?!?
Actually, one reason I like Union over League is that they have real scrums. In League, scrums are pro forma. The team that starts with possession of the ball virtually always keeps possession of the ball. The other team doesn't even try to get it. I asked an Aussie rugby fan about this once and he just rolled his eyes.

’…just before Trump took office…’
So, uh - when Trump was a private citizen.
"I made that happen."
OK, that's good. Now slow it down. Under 45 is the goal.
Thank you Althouse! Go Hawks
Jeeze, Althouse, another td. Go buy a lottery ticket while you're hot.
Well, the record of no shutouts in the Super Bowl will continue.
Another touchdown garnered…
"So Iran told America to go pound sand, let’s see how we take it."
I was listening to some KT Tunstall music today and read on Wikipedia that she had done a cover of The Knack's "My Sharona." Found it on YouTube!

Yeah but then you got bored, gave up and went upstairs. Just before another touchdown that you probably didn’t make happen. Better come back. Game’s not over.
Why would the Kakbot module not know that Trump isn't running again? Somebody needs to learn to code.
I like the way the Seahawks running back is named Walker and he actually walks a lot.
Noooooooooooooo.
I stopped watching I went upstairs. Did some things then turned it back on started watching again and within one minute there was another touchdown.
"So, uh - when Trump was a private citizen."
Turn out the lights, the party's over..
“ Yeah but then you got bored…”
Actually I didn’t get bored. I didn’t watch long enough to get bored. I looked up and for some reason, decided to stare at the thing for a few seconds, and there was a touchdown. Feeling satisfied that I had caused the touchdown. I immediately stopped watching because I had my satisfaction of finally getting a touchdown in the game. Then I went upstairs not because I was bored but because I was sleepy. I want to be where I can fall asleep.
Hahaha
Robert Kraft yawned.
My (life long Democrat) wife didinot think much of Bad Bunny. As with other SB halftime shows she wondered "Where are the White people?"
Another sack by the premature baby.
When Chris Collinsworth says it’s not over you know it’s over.
You made that happen.

Every time I hear that song now, I think of Reality Bites scene at gas station. great song, great cover.
Hope Meade has some $ on the game, sounds like Ann has got the system down
'My Sharona' redux while the Epstein saga rages through the ranks, how appropriate.
’There is clearly no conflict of interest here or in any of Trump's business deals, domestic or international.’
I heard he was mentioned in the Epstein files 4,500 times.
Let Milroe play the next series!!
That cover's better than The Knack's original, JMHO.
“ "Where are the White people?"
Apparently White people don’t buy anything anymore.
I'm beginning to smell some rats milling around the Nancy Guthrie abduction case.
Oh, by the way. Just finished my taxes. Thanks to the BBB there will be an extra $2000 in my pocket this year.
“ I heard he was mentioned in the Epstein files 4,500 times.”
I think it was 45,000.

I believe that’s what he did when he took out their nuclear program.
Very satisfying. Thanks for the help.

At least!! And I heard that Tulsi is a Russian spy and probably Putin’s illegitimate daughter. They’d better wake up Mueller!
Woohoo! Parlay for the win!

Shouldn’t you really share that with Althouse?

He knew he wasn't getting his happy ending.

CC, JSM
Did you see the story about the big crack in the ice on Lake Erie, north to south? Could something like that happen on the lake in Madison?
Only if Whoopi or Rosanne comes to visit.
Sam Darnold saw his shadow on Sunday, and there will be six more months of 'coulda woulda shoulda' from Vikings fans.

“Maybe next year the NFL can have their halftime performer sing in another language that most Americans don't speak, like Somalian or Haitian.”
Gregorian chants done in Latin.
Ice crack, Lake Erie
Probably what happened is the whole ice sheet got pushed south by that powerful NW wind we had, and that left open ice for the wind to push the sheet back north.
Pope Leo might be iffy on the Gregorian chants.
"you can examine *all* of these "noise artifacts" and if you see one that has direction, is flying at 100s of miles per hour,"
You're assuming the "artifacts" stay coherent.
"You're assuming the "artifacts" stay coherent."

Message received, NFL.

I was never with it. It's designed to divide us.

You're assuming that they,(US Air Force) don't know about and haven't/ aren't doing something about it.
I see the Regime seals are still clapping
"I see the Regime seals are still clapping"
Like I said, you take note of what people say, and when stuff actually happens, you adjust your weights.
At first I thought that Trump would back off, but Iran is not offering any face saving ways out of this for Trump, or the US. None. So now I think he might do it. But flip a coin, I don't know.

Jaq, you seem a bit sensitive.
My son played rugby (if you can call it that) his senior year in high school, but it was a mere passing phase and it hasn't held his interest.
I took him to most of his games and cheered, but in truth I had no better idea of the rules at the end of the season than I had at the beginning.
After our rugby afternoon, we went home and watched a couple of Rugby For Dummies kinda of videos. We are now slightly less ignorant than we were.
Yesterday, we caught a little of some soccer game or other, and after watching the rugby guys, all I could think of was, "They're all so... willowy."
