The Springsteen movie isn't that good. The film makers were trying to make the writing of the "dark, introspective" Nebraska album into something epic. Was it though? I understand that Bruce was struggling with his inner demons, but somehow it didn't work. Maybe the film's failure was to Bruce's credit. He isn't wildly self-destructive, flamboyantly exhibitionist, or even monstrously self-centered, and that seems to be what makes musical biopics.
The relationships didn't work either. The romantic subplot went nowhere, and while it's interesting to know that Bruce's manager was truly devoted to him, that's not dramatic enough. The movie was dark, too -- not only emotionally, but also in lighting and decor.
While I was looking up the Clinton/blue dress portrait, I came across this: The Nelson Shanks portrait of Bill Clinton (National Portrait Gallery, 2006): This is a formal, official-style painting of Clinton standing near a mantelpiece. The artist, Nelson Shanks, revealed in 2015 interviews (e.g., with the Philadelphia Daily News) that he deliberately included a subtle shadow on the left side—cast by a mannequin in a blue dress in his studio (not present during Clinton’s sittings)—as a literal reference to Lewinsky’s dress and a metaphorical “shadow on the office he held, or on him.” Shanks described Clinton as “probably the most famous liar of all time” and said he couldn’t get the scandal out of his mind while painting. According to Shanks, the Clintons hated the portrait and were pressuring the National Portrait Gallery to remove it (though the gallery said it had been off display since around 2009 for rotation reasons, not explicitly due to this). First, we will change the law in Spain to hold platform executives legally accountable for many infringements taking place on their sites.
Second, we will turn algorithmic manipulation and amplification of illegal content into a new criminal offense.
Third, we will implement a hate and polarization footprint system to track, quantify, and expose how digital platforms fuel division and amplify hate.
Fourth, Spain will ban access to social media for minors under the age of 16. Platforms will be required to implement effective age verification systems — not just checkboxes, but real barriers that work.

WWI started with a security guarantee for Belgium. It sounded morally required to the British people, but British elites wanted it so that they could create a perceived moral clarity in the people about their desired war with Germany, because they knew that the real reason that they wanted to fight Germany, to keep the continent divided and squabbling with each other, wasn't a good way to get soldiers to volunteer and to fight.
If we commit to a security guarantee for Ukraine, we are simply setting ourselves up to be dragged into the war that will inevitably be engineered specifically to drag us in, this time.

Four of my younger friends from the lake - husband and wife plus two other girls - landed in New York City a few hours ago. First time there for them all, and they are losing their minds! My phone battery may zero out just looking at their photos and texts…
It looks like the roads are clear enough but there are piles of snow at the curbs. They had dinner at an Irish pub and are now at a rooftop bar somewhere near Grand Central. The wife has already declared that she’s not coming back! lol
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has recently changed its position on gender-affirming surgery for minors, effectively withdrawing professional support for such procedures in people under age 19 and urging its members not to perform them until a patient is at least 19 years old.

I’ve been thinking about bill bennet’s index of leading cultural indicators from the early 2000s. These are little apocryphal data points that add up to major trends. In my nice, leafy neighborhood in east Dallas, the changes since Covid are dramatic. After the summer of our lord Floyd, most of our municipal officials bit hard on the abolish police mantra. Our DA expanded the amount petty thieves could steal before they might get prosecuted to $900. The businesses in my two mile square now look like a mad max dystopia. The whole front entry to our walgreens has wood panels since the glass was broken, the atm ripped out, the propane locker broken and emptied. Drugstores keep all cosmetics and hair products behind locked glass doors. Our Kroger installed a turnstile to enter, locked up the detergent aisle and installed four cameras per pharmacy aisle. We hear gunshots a few nights a week. I’ve noticed a lot of other things, but don’t want to go on and on, but it occurs to me that our experiment in self governance may well be at an end since clearly we are not a society made of folks capable of governing their behavior.

Peter Thiel appears in 2,281 files showing lunch meetings and political discussions from 2014-2017. The documents include offers from Epstein to fund Thiel’s lawsuit against Gawker. These weren’t chance encounters—they were deliberate, ongoing relationships with a known sex offender.

Mason G: "you'd be forgiven for concluding that 90% of judges are black."
Well, in cities, the benches are handed out in rough proportion to each race's share of the city population. Atlanta and Detroit may well be close to 90%. Chicago is about a third. DC's Superior Court is operated by fedgov, so its bench looks more like America as a whole. CC, JSM
I dont know what % of scientists are women, but my go-to source is of course Youtube, and Sabine Hossenfelder keeps me up to date. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=912vQr6ulNk
The discussion about Peter Thiel is interesting. He's a gay man, so I don't think he was hanging around the island looking for young girls. But clearly, Epstein was incredibly- and I mean unbelievably- connected with all sort of people from various countries and walks of life. This is actually very fascinating. Did he sell his relationships and inner knowledge of these people to other sovereigns looking for the goods on a government, an industry, or individuals? I mean...who walks around with a 'rolodex' like Epstein had?
No one. Not even the CIA had that many relationships with key people around the world. WTF?
PS- Reid Hoffman on the island does not surprise me in the slightest.
The Florida judge who let him go free the first time later claimed that he had been told to back off because Epstein was an intelligence asset. Plainly he was.
Speaking of violating civil rights, I see the riotous Commie have set up checkpoints in Minneapolis stopping all vehicles. That of course includes civilians. In a related note, there is no truth to the rumor that Don Lemon was manning a checkpoint acting as a journalist.
It is a mystery why our crackerjack investigative agency, that would be the FBI, has not infiltrated the Minneapolis miscreants. No arrests of the leadership, no arrests of the funders, nothing. I am certain they are poking around, but the damage is done.

It depends on the field, of course. I believe women are now a solid, if not overwhelming majority in biology, much less in math, engineering and physics.
Go look at the graph here: (ignore the text, it's BS):
I think it's really changed how science is done. Men are more individualistic, and competitive, and are driven to beat the next guy, even if he's a friend. Women want group science where they all get together and decide what to do, how to do it, and what the result will be.
I think it's really changed how science is done. Men are more individualistic, and competitive, and are driven to beat the next guy, even if he's a friend. Women want group science where they all get together and decide what to do, how to do it, and what the result will be.
"Science" is just another jobs program for middle bell curve women.
Kinda like HR and Government DEI bureaucracy.
This is why science will tell us that women are just better at everything than men even if they never actually build anything.
I recall the radical group Students for a Democratic Society from days at Penn State in the late 60’s/ early 70’s. I thought they were long gone. Not so.
From Power Line: “UMN SDS, organized a Jan. 28 protest outside a hotel located on campus that was allegedly housing ICE agents. Dozens of agitators swarmed the Graduate by Hilton and rocked police barricades, pounded on drums and pans, set off noisemakers, and shouted “Fuck ICE” at local and state law enforcement. University police eventually declared it an unlawful assembly and arrested 67 protesters, including Jack Louis Nimz—a public school teacher, the president of SDS’s national arm, and one of the radicals arrested for storming the campus building in October 2024.”
“ And Nimz, a transgender individual who goes by “Celia,” is an organizer with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, a Marxist-Leninist group working to “build a new, revolutionary, communist party” in the United States. Nimz is also a K-12 physical education teacher for the Minneapolis Public School District, according to the Minnesota Educator Licensing and Standards Board.”
It is the understatement of the century. At all things, in all places, we need to be better, we need to do better. We are killing ourselves. In cheap ways that will end up costing us everything.
The undermining of our high trust society is a cancer too. There was a guy who did experiments with large numbers of game theory automatons that would talk to each other, playing the prisoner's dilemma with different programs, and sometimes little clumps of these automatons would by chance all be nice and open to each other, and you know what, those clumps would prosper and grow, and the low trust ones, well, they didn't.
Changing the nature of our social interactions by introducing millions of people from low trust societies will likely cause fractures that won't be able to be fixed by changing laws.
“the American Society of Plastic Surgeons says no tranny surgery on kids under 19. The damn is breaking.“ So that’s about 15 years of medical malpractice.
Just saw the ultimate Hoosier on CNBC. He’s David Ricks of LLY. Undergrad at Purdue and MBA at Indiana. Trillion dollar market cap. 40% growth and 40% margins. Robust pipeline. Talks like Cignetti.
About time to re-read The Isle of Dr. Moreau. You know, as I recall, all those creatures were not fully appreciative of the Good Doctor's experiments, and it turned out badly. But I have a feeling in today's modern world that the fury will be mostly channeled and unleashed on those unfortunate enough to be named 'Undesirable'. Today's candidates: ICE and MAGA.
Yes let’s blame women for “how science is done.” That way we don’t have to deal with the real problem: heavy government dominance in funding which has led to risk-averse, bureaucratic science that stifles innovation. You guys who blame women for everything - you do realize this is just another way the establishment keeps us divided. The more we separate into groups who hate each other, the easier we are to subdue.
Sabine is a constant critic of how Physics is "done", by the institutions. It seems to be all about idealized theoretical constructs that do not derive from experimental results and moreover cannot be experimentally checked. Hence her bullshit meter for physics papers.
Headline at Insty right now: DON SURBER: Antifa, a wholly owned subsidiary of a billionaire: Bernie Sanders in 2019: “Billionaires should not exist.” “I am not surprised to learn the CCP—Red China—is behind this effort to stop the U.S. government from kicking illegal aliens out. After all, Tim Walz was its Manchurian vice presidential candidate, chosen by the Democrat Party because of his ability to milk social justice programs to fund Democrats. Come on. Do you really believe the DNC (Obama) would let a goofball like Kamala pick her running mate? They wouldn’t trust her to pick her nose. So just who is this Singham dude?”
Please consider the recent DEI takeover of the Association for Psychological Science. A bunch of hard-nosed and lefty (male) scientists were wiped pushed out of management by the equity and inclusion agenda. Females often do favor the compassion agenda over cold-blooded facts.
9:09 Eva Marie - Achilles is a simple minded know-it-all. He and a few other men who cannot get laid - also blame "all women" for all problems. Yes - the communists are loving that. Leftist radical progressive white women, they are a problem.
The democrat party is the sell-out party and their self righteous religious adherents are a cult, hell bent on destroying our nation for their power-lust.
"It depends on the field, of course. I believe women are now a solid, if not overwhelming majority in biology, much less in math, engineering and physics."
What I watch is math, engineering, and especially physics and cosmology. And it's overwhelming women that these shows put front and center. I don't much care, but it's obvious as hell.
Women are emotional creatures. They are the perfect target for the anti-education left, ruling and ruining our education systems. The other day - schools all over shut down so leftist teachers could abuse their students by forcing their radical ideology on them. with the ICE lies.
"You guys who blame women for everything - you do realize this is just another way the establishment keeps us divided."
I'm not blaming women for anything. I supported a healthy mix of women in my research group (support = paid their salary and mentored them to their degree). I'm just commenting on the obvious propaganda of the science shows, like Nova.
@Enigma: it all depends on how you frame the problem.(thanks, Scott Adams) The problem is the government as the source for so much of the funding. Unqualified people rising above qualified people is always the inevitable result.
Yes, Sabine has fallen hard for the "climate change catastrophe" thesis. I did notice a few days ago she had Steven Koonin's "Unsettled" on her bookshelf.
Peachy said... “Women are emotional creatures.” I disagree but I’ll leave that for another day when I have more time. But I will say this: Men are expected to control their natural inclinations. Women are encouraged to indulge their natural inclinations.
Eva - That Women are emotional is not all bad or wrong. and it is a generalization. (not all women) "Women are encouraged to indulge in their natural inclinations." yes - their emotions.
Yes let’s blame women for “how science is done.” That way we don’t have to deal with the real problem: heavy government dominance in funding which has led to risk-averse, bureaucratic science that stifles innovation. I don't blame all women.
Just the 80% or so of women in the center and left of the bell curve who should be having kids and raising them instead of pretending they are boss babes playing HR god and doing "Science" at universities.
There are some exceptional women who can do things.
According to Greek mythology, Achilles' mother, Thetis, dressed him in women's clothing and hid him on the island of Skyros to prevent him from dying in the Trojan War. He lived among the daughters of King Lycomedes, disguised as a maiden to avoid being recruited for the war.
The revelation of Trump giving the UAE military-grade AI chips in exchange for a $500 million bribe could push his Republican approval rating below 95%.
“ military-grade AI chips” does this term mean anything other than certain Nvidia chips that the US banned being sold to China? In other words, chips available to everyone else but China?
Achilles It's the reason that the price of gold and silver have been so jumpy lately. Traditionally the Chinese in times of unrest have invested heavily in gold and silver. Portable wealth.

The official line is that Xi purged the entire military leadership and likely ended any real chance China will successfully invade Taiwan.
@Achilles, fixed it for you.

ICE agents are more diverse than the people protesting them.
Ironic.

CC, JSM
PS the 5 free articles were all about ICE protests.
When you are having to give it away, that’s a sign that nobody is buying it.
Maybe we should have money acknowledgements. If you take government welfare, you must announce loudly that you did.

More on fallout re Peter Mandelson (UK). ITV news update.
The Epstein connections were astonishing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGebxGr9g8Q
The Florida judge who let him go free the first time later claimed that he had been told to back off because Epstein was an intelligence asset. Plainly he was.
And Peter Mandelson wasnt looking for teenage girls either.
Or was he?

Have you heard the stories about what our congressman do on their Israel trip? AIPAC is impressive.
I don't even hate Israel for what they do. I find it quite logical and brilliant. I wish them success.
But I also think we have a bunch of corrupt pedo sacks of shit all throughout the elite levels of our society and we need to be better.

Oh to be a parent in Minneapolis!
Achilles: "We need to be better."

@Eva Marie on women in science:
Please consider the recent DEI takeover of the Association for Psychological Science. A bunch of hard-nosed and lefty (male) scientists were wiped pushed out of management by the equity and inclusion agenda. Females often do favor the compassion agenda over cold-blooded facts.

9:09 Eva Marie - Achilles is a simple minded know-it-all. He and a few other men who cannot get laid - also blame "all women" for all problems. Yes - the communists are loving that.
Leftist radical progressive white women, they are a problem.
8:09 - typo fix.
I would say the preponderance of ignorant or merely misinformed women who are represented as the standard
Leftism is a toxic poison.
Aggie (8:04am):
I misread that as “the FURRY will be unleashed”, which was even more disturbing.
Yes, Sabine has fallen hard for the "climate change catastrophe" thesis. I did notice a few days ago she had Steven Koonin's "Unsettled" on her bookshelf.

“Women are emotional creatures.”
I disagree but I’ll leave that for another day when I have more time.
But I will say this:
Men are expected to control their natural inclinations.
Women are encouraged to indulge their natural inclinations.
And Sabine does do a good job of criticizing the cargo cult green technologies.
Oh, and she's savage about the German's blowing up (literally) their nuclear industry. She just thinks climate change is going to kill us all.
Eva - That Women are emotional is not all bad or wrong. and it is a generalization. (not all women)
"Women are encouraged to indulge in their natural inclinations."
yes - their emotions.

I don't blame all women.
Just the 80% or so of women in the center and left of the bell curve who should be having kids and raising them instead of pretending they are boss babes playing HR god and doing "Science" at universities.
There are some exceptional women who can do things.
Some.
According to Greek mythology, Achilles' mother, Thetis, dressed him in women's clothing and hid him on the island of Skyros to prevent him from dying in the Trojan War. He lived among the daughters of King Lycomedes, disguised as a maiden to avoid being recruited for the war.

@john mosby. Remember when Kash Patel said he was going to demolish the FBI building?
“ military-grade AI chips” does this term mean anything other than certain Nvidia chips that the US banned being sold to China? In other words, chips available to everyone else but China?
My guess on the preponderance of women in the science-y shows is that it's an attempt to garner female viewers (especially young female viewers).
Then again, all other things being equal, a lot of my peers would prefer to watch attractive young women 'splain things.
I know I would.
FWIW there are some very fine woman historians out there, but few are known for youth and beauty--most are Sabine Hassenpfeffer-grade.
Whats wrong with you? Sabine is hot.
"My guess on the preponderance of women in the science-y shows is that it's an attempt to garner female viewers (especially young female viewers)."
It's a DEI thing, as evidenced by the trans women they also throw in.
Well there are also hot male talking heads. In history, you’ve got the two Dans: Snow and Jones. Carl Sagan was kind of hot in his day. CC, JSM
Hump: “ Remember when Kash Patel said he was going to demolish the FBI building?”

It's the reason that the price of gold and silver have been so jumpy lately. Traditionally the Chinese in times of unrest have invested heavily in gold and silver. Portable wealth.
Balvenie Doublewood was our thing, but that was before I became diabetic and gave up drinking. Balvenie is a quite mild single malt, we both thought we were being wimps. Still, we liked it.
