There was thin snow in the air, but nothing to show for it on the ground. So much for the warnings of 2 to 6 inches. It was a little blustery, and we were the only ones out there, witnessing the nonappearance of the sun and immersed in lively conversation."What's another way to say 'lively conversation'? I don't like the cliché" — I asked Grok, knowing I'd get nothing useful, just trash like "electric back-and-forth," "crackling exchange," "vibrant sparring," and "kinetic banter." Or maybe if I'd thought of one of those by myself, I'd like it. That's the trouble with help-seeking. What you get is tainted with irritating helpfulness.
"What's another way to say 'irritating helpfulness'?" — "patronizing eagerness," "meddlesome benevolence," "grating do-goodery," "insufferable solicitude," "cloying caretaking," "smothering support," "irksome officiousness," "fussy do-gooding," "tedious tutelage"....
"What's another way to say 'write about whatever you like in the comments'?" — "Say the thing you’re actually thinking," "Ramble freely—no judgment zone," “Vent, rave, or tangent away," "Comment like nobody’s watching (but we are, and we want it)," "I’m genuinely curious what’s crossing your mind—tell me," "Unleash your brain dump"....
It wasn't that cold out there, but look at the glamorous furs I wore:

What a great picture! I wouldn't last a weekend, even wrapped in those gorgeous furs.
Many years ago I considered a job teaching business school Legal Studies at Bemidji, Minnesota, the "First City on the Mississippi" according to the Chamber of Commerce. There seemed a certain symmetry in that because a branch of my forebears were from the "Last City on the Mississippi." Luckily a helpful friend gave me a quick tutorial on winter in the upper Midwest before any harm was done.

A friend once visited relatives in Winnipeg for a week in January. They feared she would freeze to death, so they gave her a beaver coat. I imagine she looked like our hostess.

How did curling make it into the Olympics? How did bowling not make it into the Olympics? If you could play pool on ice or croquet in the snow, would those be Olympic sports?
The company that sold "Philosopher's Football" shirts to New Statesman readers had a shirt that proudly asked why it was that Britain only won the World Cup when Labour was in power. I thought maybe somebody could come up with a shirt about US Olympic hockey gold, but then I remembered that in 1980 Jimmy Carter was still president.
“ That’s an AI photo of Ann?”
It began with a screenshot from video, then I used grok to dress me in furs. The face was changed mainly to increase the resolution. The video picture was fuzzy. It also adjusted the color. The video picture had very heated up color from the sunrise.

The topic at tonight's AA meeting was "emotional sobriety". It sounds like it belongs in that list up there with "tedious tutelage". I didn't share, I usually don't when that's the topic. How do you share about something that seems like you have to say you suck at, in order to say you are getting good at. It's a thin thread, but maybe not a confusing miasma.
I sort of get it. It's about saying something to help somebody new.
It’s easy to find high quality used fur coats on line. I think I could get something for $1,000. A bit more for the hat.

It's a pretty old sport with documentation going back to the Middle Ages. It was part of the first couple of modern Winter Olympics though there was some controversy around medals awarded in 1924. Then it got dropped until the 1980s. I don't think THG gave an explanation of why but I suspect it was the small number of countries that would actually field teams.
everyone treats AI as such a fun toy. In reality it's a totalitarians wet dream. The regime in power can create what ever truth it wants to, in any form it wants.
But yeah, enjoy the higher electric prices, the waste of fresh water, and the destruction of empty places to serve your tech gods.

On the "Trump is bad for comedy" post, I thought of the catch phrase WNBC radio used for their billboard promo of Howard Stern and Don Imus, back when they were still at the same radio station. "If we weren't so bad, we wouldn't be so good".
Isn't that Trump? Kind of?
“What’s another way to say plethora of fur?”

I remember when the progressives went apeshit over Aretha Franklin wearing a fur to Clinton’s inauguration
I knew a woman in Chicago ~50 years ago who had a tattered but very warm wolf-skin coat she wore in winter. People (always women, as I recall) regularly abused her for it on public transport, and she told them when her grandfather shot those wolves in Alaska 100 years before, wolves were not endangered, but people were. Besides, they were already long dead, so throwing away the coat would be wasteful. That usually shut them up.
I believe artifical intelligence is a tech version of Mrs. Malaprop. It just doesn't really understand what the conversation is about or what the words it is using mean but it talks busily away.
Now I'm imagining Aretha Franklin singing "You make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like a natural were-wolf".
Listening to NPR this afternoon, regarding the Epstein fallout cases. Andrew, most notably. Much thoughtful discussion on how these are not legal cases, but more like public shaming. People resigning from positions for emails that were too chummy with the convicted sex criminal, Epstein, some even aiding in his public rehabilitation. A careful analysis of the 'tribal' nature of the retributions, without once mentioning party affiliation or political valence. And of course by using these secondary figures, the 'guy with the talent agency that had to resign' here, the 'Goldman Sachs lawyer that resigned' there, there's no need to mention her 'Obama' White House legal council connections, there's no need to bring up the name Clinton. And Andrew's case discussion carefully tiptoes past the sex crimes with underage girls, not digging into them but carefully noting them while discussing the actual investigation on secrets disclosures. Noting them a few times, just in case you might have forgotten.
And oddly enough, no public investigative references to what has been uncovered so far in the American political connections. Odd eh? Almost like they need to pre-bunk the story first, lay a little groundwork before broaching the difficult subject of the Clintons , not just Bill's hounddog proclivities but that whole 'charitable' Clinton initiative - how did that get funded again? Lay the groundwork, get us all thinking the right way for when the Clinton dirt starts getting uncovered, and the Obama dirty tricks connections start coming to light. As they mentioned a few times, hey, the guy is dead, been dead a long time, now. No big deal, right? Ancient history. Amirite?

George Mitchell was an Epstein guy who kept in touch with him after his pedophile conviction. George is a piece of shit.

“Surfeit of fur,” almost any time that people say “plethora,” they mean surfeit.
Of course it’s AI, people. Do you really think any wife of mine would wear anything but a respectable Republican cloth coat?
And one more thing. We’re keeping the puppy.

That sounds like a surfeit of bullshit to me. ;)
A banner featuring a photo of Donald Trump and the words “Make America Safe Again” was hung from the Justice Department’s headquarters in Washington on Thursday in one of the most public signs of the president’s influence over a department that once brought criminal charges against him.
The Justice Department has traditionally operated with a degree of independence from the White House. That separation, however, has eroded during Trump’s second term as the Justice Department has gone after his perceived political foes.

Only if you have a limited sense of the possibilities of the English language, like if you are going by a web dictionary, for example, rather than widely reading literary fiction, writers like Robert Penn Warren, or William Faulkner, Melville, etc, you know, writers who had to go by their own readings of Chaucer, Shakespeare, the great British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Byron, Coleridge, Keats, sure then you can believe whatever the inter-webs tells you.
Probably 20% of the time I have seen "plethora" used, it was not cringe.
If you were to try to parse the sentence "I felt the baby kick today" using a web dictionary, you would be out of luck, because no sense of the word "baby" can apply to what they insist you refer to as a "fetus."
Web dictionaries are just one more arm of the propaganda machine they have going to condition us.

Better an annoying intrusion than an annoying extrusion. Ewww.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has told Newsweek that a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent fired "defensive shots" at a driver after he "intentionally ran over" another federal agent.
Immigration agents shot and killed Ruben Ray Martinez, 23, on March 15, 2025, in South Padre Island, Texas, but the involvement of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) HSI unit was not publicly disclosed at the time.
“Ruben’s family has been pursuing transparency and accountability for nearly a year now and will continue to do so for as long as it takes. It is critical that there is a full and fair investigation into why HSI was present at the scene of a traffic collision and why a federal officer shot and killed a US citizen as he was trying to comply with instructions from the local law enforcement officers directing traffic," Charles M. Stam and Alex Stamm, attorneys for the family of Ruben Ray Martinez, told Newsweek via email.
