Does the sturgeon-fishing craze extend to Madison? It seems to be a fishing craze unburdened by the actual catching of fish. (FYI, there are sturgeon in Lake Mendota.) From the WSJ:

For Two Weeks, Wisconsinites Try to Spear an Elusive 200-Pound Fish

Locals huddle in ice-fishing huts, toast the gods and wait for the haul of a lifetime; ‘It’s like duck hunting through a chimney’ …

Most years, fewer than 9% of the 11,000 or so people who buy licenses on Lake Winnebago catch a fish. Last year, thanks to unusually cloudy water and dodgy ice, the figure was cut to 5.3%. …

Steve Jordan and Mark Livingstone have gone empty-handed many years, but keep coming back. 'We’re not too bright,' Jordan quips….

David Naiser had low expectations when he decided to join friends on their fourth sturgeon-stalking expedition. The group had only seen a fish once….

On opening day, Micheal Boushele grilled brats next to his family’s fishing shanty under sunny skies. The 35-year-old Oshkosh native has been coming since he was a kid, but lets others do the spearing. He prefers peering into the water and keeping the traditions going.

I was reading an article on The Athletic today about the MLBPA's new Executive Director, Bruce Meyer. There was a blurb for another article about him, which noted that he is "known for his blunt negotiating style" and adds that he has "developed a reputation for unwavering conviction and limited interpersonal charisma." The last three words made me laugh out loud. It's like saying, "He's not a [jerk], he just has 'limited interpersonal charisma'."

I'm a big fan of Olympic curling. Amazing sport. I tried curling once on a professional sheet in Minnesota, and it was great fun. Beers all around.
But like its' analogue, bar darts, it is a sport truly meant to be played with a glass of beer near at hand. Seems almost obligatory.
The Olympics needs to combine beer drinking with curling as an event. I'll leave it to other commenters to suggest details, but if nothing else, think of the sponsorship opportunities.

I like the rockpile in the picture. It's good to change things up occasionally. It reminds me of some of the rocks I've seen on my Great Lakes trips in Michigan. On a trip to the U.P., we visited places on both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. The rocks in the latter were more irregularly shaped, while the ones from Lake Superior were all smoothly rounded from the incessant wave action.

True, curling is a thinking person’s sport with a little athleticism vs an athletic person’s sports with a little thinking aka strategy. Knowledge of physics and thermo goes a long way…. Oh and psych goes for both.

I went to college outside of Buffalo, NY, and we often spent Saturday afternoons in a local bar drinking beers and watching proper curling on the TV, so here is my suggested refinement to your idea. Make them use brooms again. What's with these damp mops?

I mean, listen to the sound of those brooms fluttering against the ice. Curling lost something when they got rid of those brooms.

The Mexican Plum tree in my back yard has declared war on winter, and announced early spring. It's starting to bloom, and very fragrant.

This particular tree, for some reason, is usually about 2 weeks ahead of the others here, and about 3 weeks ahead of other native Mexican plums in the surrounding rural area. The last average frost date for this area is mid-March, so it's pretty early. I would have guessed we still have one light freeze to go.

A lot of Olympic sports surprise you and grab you for some hard to define reason beyond it's just people trying to do their absolute best at something after years of practice, and they are competing against others who have done the same. It's humanity trying to outdo itself at something peaceful. Maybe that alone is humanity outdoing itself.

Tucker addresses the "Smiling and laughing" in his video. He took a video with his Israeli driver *before* the interview. That's it. Thats where the "laughing and smiling" came from.

After the interview, the israeli thugs took their USA passports and forced the producer and assistant producer to a interrogation. Very Gestapo. Very KGB.

And just makes clear, we're Israel's colony and client state. Not the other way round. Personally, I don't get upset at the Israelis being obnoxious and acting like the USA is their bitch, since Americans obviously want to be Israel's bitch.

You can say "What a bunch of gutless, money grubing clowns" But that's what 'murcians are. And they like it that way. You literally cant get them upset at anything. Tucker Carlson had an "Israeli driver"? Why? He never left the airport. The fact is that Carlson lied and lied and lied, on tape, that the US is not Israel's "bitch" or vice versa, we are in fact allies. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick's family firm bought up the rights to tariff refunds for 20-30 cents on the dollar after Liberation Day last year. Dr Weevil ayon kay ...

"For every $100 invested, Lutnick's sons just made 3-5x" is something only a financial illiterate could have written. If you're multiplying your money by 3 to 5 times, you don't need to specify how much you start with, because it doesn't matter whether you start with $100 or $1,000 or $10,000. On the other hand, if you start by specifying the amount of your investment, e.g. "For every $100 invested", you don't specify the ratio, you just give the number of what you have afterwards, e.g. you say that that $100 will be turned into $300 or $500 or whatever.

Of course, a competent commenter would have given a link, too.

“Congratulations Progressives!! Islam has conquered NYC!!!!“
This started 3 days after 9/11
Saudis were evacuated from the US starting on Sept 14th. On Sept 19th or 20th 13 to 20 members/associates of the bin Laden were flown out of the US. In total, about 140–160 Saudis were evacuated via roughly nine charter flights during that window, with FBI screening (including interviews for many passengers) conducted beforehand.

AMB. HUCKABEE: “We don’t live in a world where polls dictate policy.”

TUCKER: “Oh, I thought you said it matters what Americans think.”

and then there is this gem:

Carlson said that according to the Old Testament, the boundaries would be “basically the entire Middle East.”

He continued: “Does Israel have the right to that land?”

“Not sure we’d go that far,” Huckabee said in reply. “It would be a big piece of land.”

Carlson then pressed him: “Does Israel have the right to that land?”

“It would be fine if they took it all,”

and this

but they are asking to at least take the land that they now occupy, they now live in,

So Lebanon and parts of Syria legitimately belong to Israel?

Speaking of 911, here is an interview with Jimmy Carter's senior security adviser explaining how we armed and funded and trained the jihadis in order to provoke the Soviets to invade Afghanistan.

AI Translation: Zbigniew Brzezinski: Yes. According to the official version of history, CIA assistance to the mujahideen began sometime in 1980 — that is, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan on December 24, 1979.
But the reality, kept secret, is quite different: in fact, it was on July 3, 1979, that President Carter signed the first directive for clandestine assistance to opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that same day I wrote a memorandum to the president in which I explained to him that, in my view, this aid would lead to a military intervention by the Soviets.

So yes, the Saudis were almost certainly involved in our "dirty work" as the Pakistani defense minister called that countries support for terrorism at our request. The most obvious inference you can draw from the Pakistani statement is that they were harboring bin Laden for the US.

Why did the bombing at Tora Bora stop long enough for bin Laden to escape to Pakistan? Why was there a cease fire called by the US?

Much of W's campaign rhetoric was the standard "you can't trust the Dems with defense" stuff the GOP had been using since at least the 70s. The people threw all those bums out. It seems to me that in defining tariffs as taxes the Supreme Court has said that Americans paid the tariffs. So then any refund would be refund to the American people.

I do not think the American people did pay the tariffs. This is a factual issue and I believe the tariffs, mostly, were not passed on to the consumer. In the 19C the tariffs were passed on and the South was dee[ly embittered by that fact because the South paid for goods made more expensive by tariffs while the North had its manufacturing protected by those same tariffs. But I do not think the same situation exists now and, anyhow, I have seen arguments that the tariffs were not passed because they were altered and lowered by agreements which were fairly quicly reached. But that issue is moot since there is no court above the Supreme Court. So then we say that the tariffs which were collected from businesses were eventually paid by individual American consumers.

We say these costs imposed on foreign businesses were not part of the cost of the product as would be taxes or shipping costs imposed by the home countries . In the 19C tariffs had two purposes: to protect home industries and to finance the government. Trump's stated purpose was to use tariffs to protect home industries against unfair trade practices by other nations and to restore a level playing field. He asserted that the trade practices of other nations had become so unfair that our national security was endangered by the debts incurred bt the trade imbalance and by the interest on the debts. And nations did negotiate with him and unfair trade practices have been reduced or eliminated and when the trade balance in these individual cases improved, the tariffs have been reduced. Tariffs have been reduced which alone would suggest to a reasonable person that they were not taxes. But all these facts have been shoved aside by the highest court. Tariffs are taxes on Americans.

Very well. Then the refunds if any go to Americans. But, moving on, if the trade imbalance has been reduced so has the trade debt and associated costs. How do these two amounts stack up in relation to each other? Are the tariffs collected greater than the trade imbalances corrected? The tariiffs have been reduced but the corrections to trade imbalances are a permanent gain.

Just some thoughts on first looking into the tariff question.

Deny it all you like, but you should not be surprised that it is not emphasized by US news outlets, as our news is heavily... curated, yeah, that's the ticket! Curated!

That video I linked is very propagandistic, but the footage of Brzezinski and the jihadis at the beginning is authentic. Remember that the truth that your side doesn't want you to hear qualifies as "enemy propaganda."

Urging the Mujahideen on, in what he explained in the interview, was an effort to get the Soviets to invade, in 1979 he did this.

If you don't think that this is a crime against humanity, just google Afghanistan in the 1970s, before we unleashed the jihadis on them, armed them, trained them, and funded them.

We are doing the exact same thing arming ISIS right now to attack Iran. There are not that many plays, and you keep going to the ones that work.

The footage of Brzeznski in 1979 flying to the Afghan border to talk to the future Taliban is just a dozen miles or so from Tora Bora, BTW.

imTay ayon kay ...

Betcha George W Bush called off the bombing of Tora Bora after getting a phone call, maybe from Brzeznski himself, or Jimmy Carter, or whoever, one of them.

Is imTay the latest blog-name of 'Tim in Vermont'? He's been calling himself 'Jaq' for a couple of years now: has he switched again to 'imTay'? All three make the same dishonest arguments, even after they've been repeatedly refuted.

'imTay' here pretends that Afghanistan was doing well until Brzezinski sent in the CIA, and insists that that was before the Soviet invasion of 1979 and the 10-year occupation that followed. That's true as far as it goes, but it omits some absolutely crucial facts. The destruction of Afghanistan began with the pro-Soviet coup d'etat of 1978. Here's a bit from Wikipedia on the Saur Revolution:

"Following the April coup, Khalqists also introduced severe repression of a kind previously unknown in Afghanistan. Khalqist chief Taraki was a hardline Leninist who advocated the implementation of a campaign modelled after the Bolshevik 'Red Terror' to impose Marxist policies in Afghanistan. Influenced by the practices of the Russian Bolsheviks, the PDPA regime launched a vicious crackdown across the country; arresting, torturing and killing tens of thousands of people, implementing a strategy of 'killing the population into submission'."

Soviet involvement in the coup is unproven, but they were in fact the inspiration for it, and the Marxist coup is what put Afghanistan well on its way to destruction. The reaction of the people was so hostile that the coupsters would have been overthrown in a year if the USSR hadn't sent in a huge army to protect them, and army which committed vast numbers of brutal war-crimes.

As for the CIA being there before the Soviet invasion the following year, so what? I'm pretty sure the KGB was already there before the CIA got there, which is the appropriate comparison.

Here's another bit from the Wikipedia article:

In his book 'Soldiers of God', "[Robert D.] Kaplan stated that it was the Saur Revolution and its harsh land reform program, rather than the December 1979 Soviet invasion 'as most people in the West suppose', that 'ignited' the mujahideen revolt against the Kabul authorities and prompted the refugee exodus to Pakistan. . . . The communists violently imposed PDPA policies across the villages of Afghanistan, perpetrating mass rapes of Afghan women, killing religious clerics and village chiefs, looting houses, stealing food supplies and torturing captives."

Blaming the fate of Afghanistan on the U.S. is evil and stupid, and a favorite theme of Russian propaganda, trying to divert the blame from their own Soviet predecessors as they commit the same sort of crimes in Ukraine, Georgia, Transnistria, and elsewhere.

Yes, it's true, and whatever Afghanistan's problems prior to our siccing the Taliban on them, they were none of our business, and Zelensky says in the interview that I linked to from University of Arizona's website, that he did it to provoke an invasion by Russia of Afghanistan and "give them their Viet Nam,"

But I want to thank you for pushing back, because it led me to the video of Brzezinski urging on the jihadis to take over Afghanistan at the Khyber Pass, you know, just a dozen miles or so from Tora Bora.

Yeah, I updated my OS and now I can't recover my "jaq" account, and I moved out of Vermont, though I lived there a long time, and still feel connected, so it is what it is. I will probably figure it out sometime soon, but for now it's gone.

You can say what you want about the commies, they didn't force women into burkas or forbid them from attending school.

Yeah now the isi is a different matter and the likes of hamid gul and colonel sultan

So we have the word of the man who ordered it, had the power to get the money, training and weapons to them, and who flew to the Afghan border to urge on the Mujahideen, against a guy who wrote a book. I am sure that these were all pretexts used, every country has problems.

You would have no problem finding people in the United States to provide pretexts for a ChiCom funded civil war, I am sure, but our problems are none of China's business, and Afghanistan's problems were not so bad that it was justified for us to fund and arm jihadis to take over.

Gosh you are impossible this type of land reform was what didnt work in south vietnam in iran and el salvador

Dr Weevil ayon kay ...

And here's imTay/Jaq/Tim-no-longer-in-Vermont doing his best, as always, to follow the pro-Soviet, pro-Putin, pro-Khamenei, pro-any-enemy-of-America party line. Has he ever written anything that contradicts Putinite propaganda? Even once?

He claims the communist Afghan revolutionaries of 1978 weren't so bad: "You can say what you want about the commies, they didn't force women into burkas or forbid them from attending school."

Did he even read to the end of my comment, the part about "perpetrating mass rapes of Afghan women, killing religious clerics and village chiefs, looting houses, stealing food supplies and torturing captives"? They were in fact at least as bad as the Taliban, maybe worse. And the Taliban were in fact radicalized by decades of murder, torture, rape, and so on from the pro-Soviet Afghans and their Russian allies.

Finally, the stupidest thing he says here (1:52pm) is "Zelensky says in the interview that I linked". He says "Zelensky" when he means "Brzezinski": all those anti-Russian Eastern Europeans with Z's in their names are the same to him!
