"It begins with one — one frog...."

The frog suits made me think of Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals," #6: "A good tactic is one your people enjoy."

But the column says we should pity these people. It quotes Rep. Maxine Dexter of Oregon:
"Tonight I defy Trump and his authoritarian project by standing in joyful, radical, peaceful resistance with the Portland Frog Brigade. We answered with frog costumes, dancing, singing and joy when Trump wanted us to cower in fear."

I did think frogs were a right-wing mascot — I'm thinking Pepe the Frog — but it's 10 years since Pepe's heyday and people of all persuasions are entitled to a frog of their own. I think the hippie vibe is a good move — costumes, dancing, singing, joy.

"...Trump wanted us to cower in fear..." she said without evidence. When Trump said "these people are crazy," he was right. Exhibit A.

Resist!

Dear communists:
(Famous quote by Theodore Dalyrimple:)

"In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control."

The left define authoritarianism - with lies.
Actual "resist" authoritarian liars are communist democratics.

I liked the puppets; one of my biggest complaints about the non-violent protestors over the last decade or so is how joyless they are. Having fun does matter. The willingness to be absurd is an asset. The sixties radicals knew it, but the more recent variety are too earnest to be anything but sad and annoying.

I guess it depends on whether it activates your supporters more than it repels those who are undecided or on the other side. I see the frog costumes and think that the protestors are fundamentally childish, unserious, and shouldn't be within a mile of policy, likewise for protests involving papier-mâché street puppets or other theater props. The kids are having fun, but the adults who actually need to wrestle with the issues see juvenile behavior.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

As a "response" to a barn-burner of a SOTU speech though, it lacks relevance, substance and sadly entertainment value. I'm dreadfully weary of all the cosplaying theatre kids and their political drama. It's like a school for retards took over the democrat party.

They operate illegal sanctuary cities. They house illegals for vote schemes and high crime. Then - you the tax payer, will be made to pay for it all with higher and higher taxes.

It’s a simple distraction tactic to lure people away from the SOTU. Immature, incoherent, and infantilizing, these types of charades should not be given so much media attention. And they wouldn’t if our media weren’t propagandists.

bagoh20 said...

Except it's driven by hatred. Do you know who else liked to dress all the same in costumes hiding their identity so they could get a good hate on?. Clue: It wasn't hippies who generally just wanted to listen to music, get high, and get laid.

tommyesq said...

Wait, so now wearing a mask (at least a frog-like mask) at a protest is OK again?

bagoh20 said...

Participation is the value, not accomplishment. What are they accomplishing?

Charlie Currie said...

I would categorize it as unserious. But, of course, hippies were never serious about “sticking it to the man “. They just wanted to be the man…with or without surgery.

Temujin said...

It's impossible to take the left seriously about anything other than their ability to destroy things, even as they pretend to be happy.

While some might think they are giving off 'hippie vibes', if you know today's progressives, you know there is nothing happy about these people. 'Progressives' are the most miserable people in any room they enter. And their goal is to make everyone as miserable at they are. They are professional hand-wringers and wannabe performing artists.

They always remind me of the old cartoon character, Hardy-Har-Har who played the sidekick to Lippy the Lion. They can put on a frog costume and play along with their make-believe friends, but they are who they are.

And one wonders about the mindset that thinks Americans in general are going to take them seriously when we see who they are led by, and how they portray themselves in front of the nation. My grandkids have more adult instinct in them than these people.

Jimmy said...

Oh good, another example of people who want to put me in a camp for not being vaxxed- or want to destroy me because my politics are different.

"A good tactic is one your people enjoy." While I think this is largely true, that doesn't mean the converse of something your people enjoy is a good tactic is true. I think the various animal suits, the singing, the videos of dancing comes off as fake. It feels like mean, nasty people trying to look like fun, nice people. The video that showed Renee Good smiling at the officer and saying, "I'm not angry at you," had the same energy. A mean, nasty person trying to convince other people and themself that she is actually a nice, good person.

It is interesting that the frogs have gotten more attention, at least on the Right, than the official rebuttal by Virginia's Governor Spanberger. Spanberger's rebuttal was filled with lies and egregious statements, but I also think it was the most competently delivered rebuttal in a very long time. For the first time, I understood why she won the gubernatorial election so easily. If I were a GOP strategist, I'd keep a close eye on her.

If they did the hippie thing and dressed as the flower children of the sixties I would have enjoyed that, but I found this performance completely asinine. I quickly imagined those inflated bags of wind being pricked and being instantly deflating. Frogs are cute, but they also inhabit a very slimy world. They’re also very loud and stupid. You know, the story of the frog in a pot being fooled by warm water, slowly getting hotter and eventually being cooked alive.

No kings? I don’t understand. For the previous four years The state authorized your employer to fire you if you did not take an experimental shot. For four years, the state threatened to arrest parents and children who went outdoors to play in parks. For four years here in California, they arrested people who went to the beach or went surfing. For four years, they threatened to arrest teenagers who want to skate parks and eventually fence them off. When the skaters hopped defenses, the state filled in the skate parks with sand. But preferred members could go out to Michelin rated restaurants. Those who were not connected, have their restaurants closed and their businesses closed. No Kings? When did that start? They were perfectly happy with an all powerful state for the previous four years.

They were perfectly happy with state intelligence agencies spying on their opponents. They were perfectly happy with state intelligence agencies, spying on reporters, senators, and even political candidates from the other team running for office.

They are perfectly happy with kings as long as they are from their side.
