America is great again. A Golden goal to enter the Golden Age of America.

And how stupid does the NFL look now with its Super Bowl show?

What was so great about that interview was how real and authentic it was. And he gave tribute to the goalie which was well deserved.

Goalie Connor Hellebuyck was the difference between a humiliating defeat and this great win. An amazing performance at goalie.

Yep. Unbelievable saves. MVP

Lost two teeth. Scored the game winner. Gave the perfect interview. Ordering Hughes USA jersey…..

Did everyone see how the team brought out the very young children of a deceased teammate for a picture?

A really classy thing to do. A real brotherhood.

"I love the U.S.A."
Me too, brother.

Just A Thought చెప్పారు...

Also, remember the gold medal winning U-20 (or maybe U-18) juniors win a couple years back and the genuinely patriotic man’s enthusiastic way they sang the anthem? (I think it was linked on this blog). Something about USA Hockey culture that embraces both the USA and the hockey….

Curious George చెప్పారు...

Jack Hughes lost a couple of teeth to a high stick penalty. Didn't miss a shift.

Kinda cool that the US had two pairs of brothers. Jack and Quinn Hughes, and Matthew and Brady Tkachuk. Quinn Hughes scored the OT goal against Seden in the semi-final game, and of course Jack's OT goal was for the goal.

Johnny "Hockey" Gaudreau, who was killed with his brother by a drunk driver in 2024. They were both in town together for their sister's wedding.

They also had his sweater at the medal ceremony, and in the final team photo.

Hockey is hard to watch on TV. It would be easier to follow if the puck was the size of a soccer ball.

john mosby చెప్పారు...

Just watched the Six Nations Rugby tournament, France v Italy. At the anthems, the producers just selected the mike covering the teams themselves, leaving out the band and the crowds. You could hear the (extremely diverse) guys belting out Canto Degli Italiani and the Marseillaise enthusiastically but entirely without vocal skill. And also hear the ball boys and girls joining in. And of course there were the obligatory teary tough guys. CC, JSM

AMDG చెప్పారు...

Great win. There is nothing worse then running into a hot goalie.

The most intense thing in team sports is hockey sudden death OT.

I still wish they would skate 5 on 5. The 3 on 3 is like the ghost runner in baseball - it cheapens it.

It did look like the Canadian guys were devastated. It made me think of a question I have for high level athletes: At the end of the day do get more long term fulfillment from winning easily against an obviously inferior opponent or losing to your greatest rival in an epic battle?

Breezy చెప్పారు...

Sad about the Gaudreau Brothers, specifically Johnny Hockey, but apparently they were incredibly motivating in this win. I hope his family can get a honorary medal somehow.

Both the men's and women's hockey teams win the gold against the Canadians with goals in overtime.

I have read that Canada voted for Carney as a way to stick it to Trump. Childish temper tantrums have consequences, even at the Olympics.

The US would have won two golds today if Eileen Gu was competing for her country of birth. A number of world class (and almost world class) American athletes have competed for other countries over the years, but usually that’s been because of bad luck or not quite being good enough caused them to miss the USA team. By contrast, Gu comes across as being for sale to the highest bidder. Thankfully the hockey gold eclipses hers.

The best is the Scottish rugby team belting out “Flower of Scotland.”

Oh Flower of Scotland,
When will we see your like again?
That fought and died for
Your wee bit bill and glen.
And stood against him.
Proud Edward’s army.
And sent him homeward to think again.

It makes me want to kick an Englishman hard in the balls, and I’m not even a Scot.

And England is stuck singing God Save the King, which is the anthem for the whole UK, including the teams they play against, rather than Blake's Jerusalem. CC, JSM

They feel that way about other Canadians, too. Ask people in the western provinces what they think about 'equalization payments'.

Canada is not finished as a country. It has never been a country to be finished as.

It is a colony of England, run by an English king, to whom everyone who gets a govt check must swear a fuehreroath.

Parliament can't buy a ream of copy without king Chuck's "assent" can't pass the simpeselaw without Chuck's say so.

Chuck is in of military and can send them into war on a whim.

Look at the recent appointment of carney as Chuck's pm for Canada.

I'd be OK with them joining the us but NOT as a state. If in 50-75 years they show they have assimilated, then statehood on a province by province basis

John henry చెప్పారు...

Big Mike,

The people of Canada did not elect carney as pm.

His party elected him as party leader. He got 85% of 151,000 party member votes and chuck appointed him prime minister for Canada.

Carney is one of 3 pms in Canada history not to hold a seat in parliament. He did get elected, with 46,000 votes to a seat from Nepean later.

To say that carney was elected by the people of Canada is a sick joke that Canada has been perpetuating for too long.

Their monkey, their circus and if it works for them fine by me. Just don't piss on my shoe and call it rain.

Maybe they can edge back ahead of Alabama. In 50 years.

Not aimed at you, Mike most Americans think carney was elected in some meaningful sense of the word. Canadian press a Gentry at work.

Hockey was/is the only sport I really care about much after the blm crapola. They never stooped to that stupidity.

Maybe as a consolation prize the Canadians can go to Florida and meet the Stanley cup team.

Maybe in another 32 years a Canadian team can win it again.

Canadians did a great job. Americans did a great job and we won. Classy.

Curious George చెప్పారు...

"five-hole."

Whenever the goalie has to make a quick side to side move to cover the far side the five hole is vulnerable. I'm guessing Hughes saw that. Or knew it. Either way....GOAL!

Mason G చెప్పారు...

"Why do they do that?"

Unlike earlier comments by US athletes disparaging the US, Jack Hughes expressed his love of the country. According to some people, that's a pretty divisive sentiment.

This was an all NHL Olympics. Players on both sides were playing against NHL teammates. I think the fact that it was a huge rivalry, but players had friends on the other side, is pretty cool. One of the great traditions of hockey is the handshake line after the game.
