Secretary of War Pete Hegseth today announced that the War Department will conditionally continue to provide support to Scouting America — formerly the Boy Scouts of America — following the youth organization's commitment to pull all diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives from its program....
The secretary said his motivation for cutting ties with the scouts was linked to what he said are the organization's violations of President Donald J. Trump's Jan. 21, 2025, Executive Order 14173, titled "Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity."
"But, before making this big change, I decided to meet with the current scouting leadership to convey our deep concerns," Hegseth said, adding that Scouting America eventually agreed to several "key reforms" based on a series of ongoing conversations between Scouting America, himself and other senior War Department officials....
"This includes reviewing and replacing politicized, divisive and discriminatory language throughout the organization, programs and all publications. No more DEI. Zero," Hegseth said.
Scouting America has also agreed to discontinue its "citizenship in society" merit badge, which made it mandatory for those with the rank of Life Scout to "realize the benefits of diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership," prior to being allowed to advance to the rank of Eagle Scout, according to Scouting America's official website.
The organization also changed a policy that didn't distinguish between male and female participants' biological sex at birth. "Accordingly, Scouting America membership applications will continue to only provide 'male' and 'female' as sex designations. Scouting America will enact a policy that indicates that biological boys and biological girls will not be permitted to share intimate spaces, including toilets, showers and tents"....

For more than a century, the Boy Scouts of America prepared over 130 million American boys to make moral and ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. But in the early 2010s, the once-great organization began to make significant cultural changes. It started with introducing DEI initiatives, then changing its name to Scouting America, accepting girls into the program, and diluting its focus on God and country to include humanism and pagan religions.
As a result, membership has plummeted from 10 million in 1970 to less than 1 million today. These changes were in violation of Executive Order 14173, 'Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,' issued by President Donald J. Trump on January 21, 2025. I was seriously considering ending all Department of War support to Scouting America—which has traditionally come in the form of personnel support and access to DoW equipment, installations, facilities, and offices worldwide.
But before making this big change, I decided to meet with the current Scouting leadership to convey our deep concerns. Following a series of ongoing conversations between Scouting America, myself, and other senior War Department officials, Scouting America agreed to several key reforms....
First, Scouting America will remove all politicized, divisive, and discriminatory language from the organization, its programs, and its publications. No more DEI. Zero.
Second, Scouting America will discontinue the 'Citizenship in Society' merit badge, which required Scouts to realize the benefits of DEI in order to advance to the Eagle Scout rank.
Third, Scouting America will revise its policies to distinguish biological sex at birth as either male or female, and prohibit biological boys and girls from sharing intimate spaces such as toilets, showers, tents, and cabins. This applies to participants, leaders, volunteers, staff, and all others.
Fourth, Scouting America will honor those who serve by waiving the registration fees for children of active-duty, guard, and reserve families.
Fifth, Scouting America will introduce a new Military Service merit badge, with requirements to be determined.
Sixth, Scouting America will appoint a Pentagon liaison officer or employee to facilitate communication and coordination, in accordance with the Joint Ethics Regulation.
In exchange, the Department of War will continue to allow Scouting America activities on military installations and facilities, providing logistical support as authorized by law and policy—building on historic collaborations like national jamborees, which Congress has authorized as training exercises since 1972.
This agreement is contingent upon Scouting America making substantial progress on these changes. We will vigorously review their compliance in six months, and if they fail to comply, we will cease all support. We hope that doesn't happen, but it could.
Ideally, I believe the Boy Scouts should go back to being the Boy Scouts as originally founded—a group that develops boys into men....

I have some anecdotal exposure to female Boy Scouts. The main reason girls flooded in as soon as they were allowed is because the BSA has always kept its outdoor programs, while the Girl Scouts really went off the deep end of lefty feminism and stopped doing useful fun activities.
The girls drawn to BSA seem to be the same Title IX girls who do sports. So most of them aren't trying to gut the BSA into a skinsuit. Troops sex-segregate their patrols so you're not in a tent with the opposite sex. The BSA was just getting over the scoutmaster sodomy scandals, so I am sure they have been very careful about all this. I have no idea how they handled kids claiming to be trans.
The Explorer program, for ages 14-21, including outdoor-adventure oriented posts, has been coed for over 50 years, so the BSA didn't go into this totally cold.
So there is some hope for this to all work out.
Yet another way I wish we could emulate the Scandis. Scandinavian Scouting has been coed for a very long time, following their general culture in which mixed nudity is not a big deal and Germanic males aren't the world's biggest poonhounds.

I joined the Boy Scouts in the late 1950s and made Eagle in the early 1960s. I did it by camping, hiking, learning how to tie a square knot and throw a clove hitch, and basically be safe and at home in the woods. Getting away from that was a blunder.
I’m a church musician, so I’ve seen close up what sort of “inclusion” DEI brings to two denominations, Methodist and Episcopalian. The diversity bit led to the demand for female and gay clergy. The kiss of death. Schism followed. On the Methodist side, denomination cut in half. On the Episcopal side, traditionalists simply driven out. Traditional families fled both. Observance went to hell. Methodists lucky to draw 20 to a Sunday service, Episcopals lucky to draw 10. Both denominations look to be headed to extinction, so the “included” seem likely to decline to zero. Victory!

The real question is why did the Boy Scouts adopt this nonsense in the first place. The Left finally succeded in the 100 year old mission to destroy the Boy Scouts that had God in their pledge and stood for honor and patriotism.
The left went too far, causing a needed correction. Now the right goes too far, which will also result in a backlash. And Hegseth groups climate change and DEI under the "woke" umbrella, so I guess the scouts will have to excise all discussion of that topic from their publications, etc.

Had a thought: one way to teach young people that there really are gender differences is to mix them in an environment where they have to do physical stuff. Like a coed backpacking trip. Then you really learn that, wow, Janey Sue can't carry as much as Billy Bob. But on the other hand, Janey Sue can rock climb much faster than big burly Billy Bob. But tall lanky Timmy Ray is really the fastest rock climber. Etc.

I was on track to be a good Boy Scout--my father was an assistant scoutmaster at our church and my older brother was a God and Country Eagle Scout. Some of my earliest memories are tagging along on the hiking trips to Shiloh NMP and Forrest SHP.
But my father died and my brother went off the rails without strong discipline and by the time I was old enough I joined the troop down the street rather than the one at the family church, much farther away.
I wanted to get mapreading and orienteering merit badges in particular but they didn't have anyone qualified to teach and test me, so I think I ended up with the cooking with a campfire badge.
After a year--including a week at the Kia Kima remote camp, which was fun even though my nose ran the entire time--I quit. The scoutmaster and his son were kinda pervy.
One area in which I agree with the Magas - they should go back to being the Boy Scouts. There are plenty of organizations that are exclusively for girls (like, the girl scouts) but none that are for boys. I hope that this incentivizes them to move back in that direction.
If you’re going to have juvenile and teenaged biological males sharing tents with juvenile and teenaged biological females then the the Scout motto — “Be Prepared” — takes on an added urgency.

Girls were first permitted in BSA back in the late "60s, when I was an Assistant Scoutmaster. IIRC it was only 16 and older, because we offered more rigorous programs. GSA were not yet at the point of giving badges for knitting pussy-hats, but they sure were moving that way.
Some GSA units were actively protesting the Vietnam war. Many BSA troops had pre-ROTC, with lots of emphasis on fieldcraft, marksmanship, wilderness survival, unit leadership, and so on. Many WWII parents, and their daughters, wanted that.
More recently, as GSA spun increasingly out of orbit and active lesbian became significantly more prevalent, parents of girls nearly begged for inclusion in BSA, all the way down to pre-teens. That part was NOT any DEI nonsense, and GSA were furious about BSA "stealing" their girls.

The battles to overcome Diversification, Equivocation, and Inanitiies (DEIsm) are fought in the trenches, on the front lines, by men and women of noble character.
Getting rid of the "Citizenship in Society" merit badge is a good thing- it was a joke. The 3 other Citizenship badges aren't.
Troops were sex segregated until very recently. They started a few mixed troops as an experiment with male and female patrols segregated. I imagine that's gone by the wayside with this agreement. Seems Scout leadership forgot why they had sex segregated troops in the first place. Studies had been done in other nations that had mixed troops. One of the observations was- in working for any badge or skill both male and female leaders would offer aid and assistance to girls in overcoming obstacles or extra learning- leaving the boys to their own devices. IOW- boys were shortchanged. Boys get the help they need when surrounded by other boys.
As far as trans Scouts went- individual troops could reject membership in the troop if they didn't have the proper facilities to handle them. Never came up in any troop I was familiar with. As far as pervy (or disruptive) leaders go- any one of the key 3 can reject an adult leader for any stated or non-stated reason at all. In my time as a Key 3 member, we rejected one application, kicked one adult out from a leadership position, and had one parent we couldn't allow on camping trips- he was a registered sex offender. And local so everyone (else) knew the story, which I learned later. 18 year old with a 17 year old girlfriend with a vindictive father who pursued charges...
The Key 3 and PARENTS are responsible for maintaining a safe environment in Scouts. And parents are responsible for maintaining a safe environment in any youth activity. Seems there's a lot of abuse in gymnastics. And it runs rampant, apparently, in children's modeling competitions. Fact of life 101- pedos will try to infiltrate any youth organization. If you're a parent you should be involved with whatever organizations your children are in. That's parenting 101. And why our one female child (out of 5) wasn't in GSA. We went to a leader conference that told us we didn't want anything to do with GSA.

Royal Rangers, an Assemblies of God sponsored group. Going through their site- apparently any "born again" congregation can sponsor a troop. One of local district leaders is a former Royal Ranger.
Trail Life USA- requires belied in a triune God, leaving out Latter Day Saints and a few other "Christian" denominations. I have one sone involved in a leadership position in Trail Life- troop sponsored by a Latin Mass RC congregation.

Maybe not the general public. But the military and Scouting are intertwined. The Jamborees were held at Fort AP Hill for almost 20 years. There still is a lot of military support for the Jamborees and more local mass campouts. There are active Scout troops on almost every military base, and the same military members and spouses who don't like having wokeness shoved up their asses at work, certainly don't like having it forced up their kids' asses.
So demanding the BSA shape up is part of Hegseth's strategy for making the military hospitable to the silent majority again. CC, JSM
