"He won an Emmy for most outstanding personality in 1953, besting nominees including Edward R. Murrow and Lucille Ball."

That year, he memorably condemned Joseph Stalin on a broadcast and gave a dramatic reading of the burial scene in Shakespeare’s 'Julius Caesar' with the names of prominent Soviet leaders substituting for Caesar and his circle. 'Stalin must one day meet his judgment,' the archbishop intoned. Stalin died after a stroke the next month...."

From "U.S. Archbishop Will Be Beatified, One Step Away From Sainthood/The move involving Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, who hosted a popular midcentury radio and TV show and died in 1979, ends a six-year delay" (NYT).

"The case for Archbishop Sheen’s canonization had been delayed by two hurdles. Most serious was a request by the diocese of Rochester, N.Y., where Archbishop Sheen served as a bishop for several years in the 1960s, for a review of 'his role in priests’ assignments.' That stemmed from a concern that he may have overlooked sexual abuse by at least one priest in the diocese....  The other obstacle was an unusual dispute over the archbishop’s remains between the archdiocese of New York and the much smaller diocese of Peoria...."

Communists and communism - an ideology of human cruelty, lies, theft.
Why leftists love communism and make excuses for it.... and lie about it - and remain willfully ignorant of the history of communism. Willfully ignore the mass-deaths, gulags, and stolen property. Stolen free will. Stolen human dignity.
False promises, force.
Communists are nothing but thieves and cruel liars.

I grew up in the Diocese of Peoria, was confirmed by then-Bishop Franz at 12, read the diocesan newspaper avidly, even after I no longer was a believer. I liked to see their official rankings of movies and fantasized about those given the rating of "Condemned".

My bestie Gemini tells me : "The Diocese of Peoria claimed Archbishop Fulton Sheen as its own by highlighting his roots as a "native son" born in El Paso, Illinois, and ordained in Peoria in 1919. The Diocese initiated his cause for canonization in 2002 after the Archdiocese of New York declined to do so, eventually winning a legal battle to transfer his remains from New York to a chapel in St. Mary’s Cathedral in Peoria in 2019. "Most Outstanding Personality" is one hell of a claim. It would be hard not to brag about that until people hated you.

bagoh20 చెప్పారు...

I never heard of him, but remember seeing him. I never listened to him until today, and he has some great messages.

On civilization: "if you don't live as you think, you will soon think as you live."

“To a great extent the level of any civilization is the level of its womanhood. When a man loves a woman, he has to become worthy of her. The higher her virtue, the more noble her character, the more devoted she is to truth, justice, goodness, the more a man has to aspire to be worthy of her. The history of civilization could actually be written in terms of the level of its women.”

I don't know anything of Sheen's personal life, and I don't need to. I hope it was virtuous. I'm learning to separate men from there words. Ideas do not belong to the men who state them. They are products of our combined civilization over thousands of years. Any of us might find some greatness and share it, some are much better at this than others.

Sexual abuse of children is a stain on the Catholic church.
Unfair to accuse everyone.
All sexual abuse of children is a stain on humanity. Including biden's mass illegal importation of child sex traffickers.
But no one condemns the religion of the holy democratic party.
Oh - lookie here.

Contrast his comments on stalin's death with those of Eleanor Roosevelt. Here's what ER said in "My Day" her nationwide weekly column:

"Stalin was a strong man and a great leader. Many of us feel he did his people great harm, but he will now be judged by the only all-wise judgment. We can safely leave that judgment in the hands of the Almighty."

"There is no doubt that Stalin seemed more than just a ruler to the people of Russia. He was the fountain from which flowed everything that improved their lot, and when they had to suffer they turned to him to alleviate their suffering. If he told them sacrifices had to be endured, they accepted his pronouncement in the way a good Christian accepts the sacrifices which his religion teaches him are made necessary in order for him to achieve salvation."

Gosh Uncle Joe wasn't so bad after all!

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

There's no evidence Sheen abused anyone. The "Well, he didn't do enough to punish sex abusers in the Catholic Church" can be aimed at anyone in the Catholic heirarchy before 2000. Its just another Leftwing weapon to destroy the Church.

"America, it is said, is suffering from intolerance — it is not. It is suffering from tolerance. Tolerance of right and wrong, truth and error, virtue and evil, Christ and chaos. Our country is not nearly so overrun with the bigoted as it is overrun with the broadminded."

From his 1931 essay "A Plea for Intolerance"

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

BTW, in 1950-1953, Stalin before his death was sending MIG fighters (and pilots) and other weapons to kill American boys in Korea. But i guess ER wasn't too worked up about that.

You can get his old "Life Is Worth Living" shows on Relevant Radio, AM 950, in Chicago (and I'm sure elsewhere) from 8AM-9AM Sunday mornings. He was whip smart and very funny. There are also companion books about his shows.

This is from his Wikipedia page: For 20 years as "Father Sheen", later monsignor, he hosted the night-time radio program The Catholic Hour on NBC (1930–1950) before he moved to television and presented Life Is Worth Living (1952–1957). Sheen's final presenting role was on the syndicated The Fulton Sheen Program (1961–1968) with a format that was very similar to that of the earlier Life Is Worth Living show. For that work, Sheen won an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality, and was featured on the cover of Time magazine.

He was incredibly popular. You can't imagine that today in these heathen times.

Funny story about Stalin. After attaining the status as the most powerful man in the USSR he visited his dying mother in Tblisi in 1935, expressing to her that she ought to be proud he'd become the equivalent of what the Tsar basically was. She was underwhelmed and unimpressed, and told him that he'd have done better had he completed his pursuit of the Orthodox priesthood.

Georgian mothers be like that.

Quaestor చెప్పారు...

Youtube is well-stocked with Fulton J. Sheen footage. What's striking isn't his homilies, which are, on the whole, only slightly more profound than an Ann Landers column, it's the cape! Floor-length and hot pink -- Sheen's look is something between a very campy Dracula and a transitioning Darth Vader (From now on, I want you to call me Loretta.).

Tom T. చెప్పారు...

"After attaining the status as the most powerful man in the USSR he visited his dying mother"

The old joke was that Brezhnev took his mother around to show off his nice apartment, his big car, and his dacha, and she got worried: "but Leonid, what if the Communists come back?"

This is great news! The delay always seemed a bit like of sour grapes, because, as I understand it, the Archbishop was rather outspoken with regard to his fellow clergymen and prelates, and their inability (refusal?) to shepherd their flocks so that they saved souls. Probably cost him a Cardinal's mitre for the effort.
