Aging is sad in a new way now.

Translation: "Today, Lindsey Vonn is competing in her fifth Olympic Games. 📷 Olympic profile photo Turin 2006 (21 years old) 📷 Olympic profile photo Milan-Cortina 2026 (41 years old)"

That "is competing" needs amending to was competing.

Sad news that she fell and got hurt, most likely because of age.
Good news is that she's one of those people that get more attractive as they age.

Her look is so much warmer in the 2006 photo.

Money Manger said...

At age 41 she should not have competed--and taken the place of a younger skier. She has multiple medals, and was unlikely to get another. That being said, anyone who has torn an ACL can only slightly imagine the blinding, pass-out, please-shoot-me, excrutiating pain she must have felt in that tumble.

Big Mike said...

Unless she reinjured her ACL Vonn competes again in the Super-G on Thursday.

And since empathy is the byword these days, I want to blame somebody, and even though I really like Tom Brady, who doesn't, truly, I blame him for making other extraordinary people like himself, believe they too could defy aging.

Here is looking at you Tom (place holder for a middle finger emoji, that should exist, but at this particular times it's not available)

That’s a bad break. My friend Jon had the exact same ski accident in which he rolled but the bindings held creating the rotation fracture. Luckily an excellent orthopedic surgeon was on call at St Bernadine’s saved his foot. Strangely another friend Bob broke his ankle stealing second base and the same surgeon showed up drunk and botched his leg, causing the calf muscles to atrophy. He lost the major league contract he had just signed and the million dollar payout went up his nose. Both are gone now

Big Mike said...

I do feel sorry for USA’s Breezy Johnson, who skied the race of her life to win the gold, only to be overshadowed by her teammate’s wipeout (not to mention, even more superficially, Vonn’s looks).

Like Vonn, Breezy Johnson will be competing again Thursday. Go for it, Breezy!

If you think she's had work done to her face, you should see what they did to her knees. I would say this is a triumph both for her cosmetic and orthopedic surgeons.......She has had a knee replacement. Maybe next time she can compete in the Special Olympics.

minnesota farm guy said...

No question she has had cosmetic surgery. The Olympic committee should have removed her from competition as medically disqualified and let an alternate race. She was critically injured for a downhill racer. Selfish on her part and stupid on the part of the US Olympic committee. One can hope she is not badly injured although it's a safe bet the she is going to get the knee replacement now that she needed before she arrived in Cortina.

Kakistocracy said...

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but it wasn’t safe to race. Pushing yourself to win is one thing, but racing at an Olympic level a week after an ACL tear is just foolish.

I'm pretty convinced that the advertisers (or their analysis teams) ran some kind of survey or assessment to gauge the potential viewership "hit" if Lindsey Vonn competed while injured, compared to the scenario where the team declared her a no-go and let a fully healthy athlete take her spot. I don't need a Wheaties box lecture to understand how the Olympics actually work in the real world.

Sometimes someone has to save you from yourself, especially in a situation like this.

That said, I hope she recovers soon.

No worries. If she can't go, Marco Rubio can take over.

Aggie said...

This is a stupid question probably, but I'll ask it: Do Olympic teams have a back bench, i.e. extra team members in the event of happenstances like this one, where someone conceivably drops out due to injury or other life circumstances? I would have thought so. Certainly the qualifying trials has plenty of candidates, especially for events like this one. But maybe the budgets are so limited there's no room for extra riders. I would have thought the team's manager would have told her regretfully that she must sit it out after such a serious type of injury, for the team's sake at least as much as for hers.

Wilbur said...

I've only aware of Lindsey Vonn from when I read she was Tiger Woods' main squeeze. Or he was hers, I can't remember. I guess squeeze status can fluctuate between genders.

Perhaps strangely, I too prefer the picture of her on the left. She looks friendly and good-hearted.

And Mark, I must agree, the woman on the right looks like she would be at a Republican National Convention. Not that I object to that, but it does hint at a knowing look of unattainability.

Big Mike said...

Correction to my comment at 10:17. You cannot reinjure or further injure an ACL that is totally torn.

In response to Minnesota farm guy, people knowledgeable about downhill skiing say that it was safe for her to ski with a special brace. They know, or claim to know, and I don’t. Are you an expert in the kinesiology of alpine skiing? Maybe you’d want to defer to those who are?

Anyway, people! A female USA skier WON THE DOWNHILL! She wasn’t named Vonn. Deal with it.

Big Mike said...

@Aggie, of course Team USA carries alternates. Vonn’s ACL injury happened just days ago so it is possible that under Olympic Alpine Skiing rules it was too late to replace her with an alternate. Or the coaches, conferring with team doctors, trainers, and Vonn herself, may have decided that Vonn skiing with a brace was more likely to win a medal than their alternate. Their call to make, not ours.

For those focused on Lindsey Vonn’s age, back in 2008 US Olympic swimmer Dara Torres won three silver medals in Beijing. She was also 41, and had given birth to a daughter. (No word on whether the daughter was born with gills.)

Two of her medals were on relays but she won an individual silver in to 50 meter race, losing the gold by 1/100 of a second. When interviewed on TV she cheerfully said that she regretted trimming her fingernails the night before the race. Classy.

Andrew said...

“ I hope they get her a MedicAlert bracelet.”

You know, if she agreed for this footage to be used in an ad with her shouting, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up”, followed by the helicopter airlift, that would be marketing genius and make her a lot of money.

Fun facts about Lindsay: "In 2005, as the winner of the downhill race at Val d'Isère, Vonn was offered a pregnant Tarine cow, a locally popular dairy breed. Although she was offered the option to sell the animal immediately back to the organizers for €5,000, Vonn decided to keep it, as she knew a farmer in Austria who would be willing to take care of the cow, whom she named "Olympe". In 2009, she won a goat, which she gave to a different farmer in Austria. In 2014, she won a calf in Val d'Isère, which she kept as well. As of 2014, she owned a small herd of cows on the farm."

I offered to get an emblem, and attach it the grill of her Ram 2500 or her Mercedes minivan. And told her that if she succeeded, I wouldn’t live closer than two counties from her. “ Wishing fellow Buck Hill alumni Lindsey Vonn the best recovery possible. And pulling for my other Buck Hill alumni, Paula Moltzan to pick up a medal for the team.”

Vonn certainly didn’t pick up her Downhill expertise at Buck Hill. Can you even hit 35, top to bottom, going straight?

Not denigrating what that ski area turns out in ski racers. Good friend spent a year there growing up while his father was on sabbatical at the U of M. And his middle daughter trained with them at Mt Hood a couple of years in HS. It was kinda a joke. The groups based there would be up on the mountain maybe 10-11 am. Buck Hill kids were up there at 8 am, and taking a break then. And doing what they were famous for - running thousands of gates. Traditionally, one of the best programs in the US, for skill events.

Now my story. Back country ski group friend was a sports pediatrician in the Twin Cities. His three boys went through the program at Buck Hill, and so, he got on the ski patrol there. Was one of two first patrollers there certified on tele skis. I was living in SLC during the winter Olympics, and he came to work. Not having the political connections for doctoring for alpine events, he ended up doing Luge and Bobsled. In any case, his present for staying with me was a T Shirt for the Buck Hill Ski Patrol, showing a couple patrollers, proclaiming 30k or so avalanche free days there. It was funny because it’s got the wrong snow, and not enough elevation to avalanche. And I had actually been snowed in one time in Little Cottonwood Canyon, by SLC. Best powder I ever skied. Gave the T shirt to that friend whose daughter skied with them on MT Hood.

@ Big Mike I am more than familiar with what happens to the stability of one's knee when the ACL goes. I don't care what kind of BS the Vonn supporters say; brace or no brace she was asking for trouble and the awful picture of her fall and the result prove she got it. Vonn exhibited the classic athletic "more balls than brains". Someone should have played adult in the room and saved her a lot of pain.

narciso said...

Did not know the origin, where can you drive one put in the desert

Kakistocracy said...

The turn Vonn was skiing was a bit rough, her skis chatted around through it. To me, it looked like this compressed her just as she took off — putting her back & off balance. She extended her pole for balance which hit the gate while in flight, which rotated her.

It doesn't look directly linked to he knee, though perhaps she would have been stronger in the turn before she took off. Once she rotated in flight it was out of her control.

Erich Sailer was the head racing coach and director at Buck Hill. It still seems weird that you could develop a Lindsey Vonn on a bunny hill, but proximity, repetition, and good coaching count for a lot, something Sailer obviously understood.

Alpine ski racing is hardly more than one hundred years old, and so Erich Sailer represents most of it, and like other great American coaches bridged the Atlantic—notably Pepi Gramshammer, whose contributions to Vail were immeasurable, and with whom Sailer brought life to Red Lodge, Montana—he inspired and prepared U.S. athletes to compete on the world stage.

Bruce Hayden said...

Vonn is unique there. American women just aren’t competitive in Alpine racing that old. In the skill events (SL, GS) they have traditionally peaked in maybe their early 20s, and the speed events (SG, DH) in their late 20s. Men tended to peak later, and the best guys could be competitive in the speed events in their late 30s. And even early 40s. Part of it, I think, is getting comfortable at those speeds (I never came close). Even in CO, that training was problematic. Good friend was #2, in DH, in the Rocky Mtn Division juniors in high school, and was lucky to have the opportunity to train at Lionshead at Vail - where they just non-stopped, top to bottom, for a week straight. Hours a day at 70 mph or so. It’s just hard, getting the time at those speeds (and faster) if you aren’t on a national team, or one of their training squads.

Of course, older male racers, by that time have spent the many hours at those speeds, and have raced all the major downhill courses a number of times in Europe and America By then. And Vonn, of course. That’s why she was competitive. I think I remember when she moved from skill events to speed events (my next brother tracked that sort of thing, racing until he hit 70 - but missing his goal of 70 at 70, with his doctor telling him to quit racing period).

Kakistocracy said...

As a former ski racer, there are injuries one can sustain that don’t necessarily preclude competing in a downhill: a broken finger, bruised arm, etc.. But a torn ACL is not one of these as you’re missing stability under lateral and fore/aft pressure. She’s fortunate to have gone out of the course before the real speed built up.

Bruce Hayden said...

“Erich Sailer was the head racing coach and director at Buck Hill. It still seems weird that you could develop a Lindsey Vonn on a bunny hill, but proximity, repetition, and good coaching count for a lot, something Sailer obviously understood.”

I think that the answer is that she didn’t. My memory is that she made the US team on her skiing skill events, where the thousands of gates the racers at Buck Hill ski. Then transitioned to speed events later. By then, I believe, she was living in Vail, that does have the required elevation drop to train for speed events.

I remember, one of the first times we skied Vail, was watching an international downhill hill (US, France, Austria) down the Great Steps there. It was, I believe, 1964, a year or two after Vail opened.

We raced for A Basin (CO) in HS. The team moved down to Keystone, by the time my younger brothers were racing. Then combined with the Breckenridge team to form Team Summit. Surprising number of parents with very promising junior racers move there for the end of HS, including some from Buck Hill. Or Vail, just over Vail Pass. On either team, their PE is a couple hours of race training every school day. Maybe not as intensive as Sailor at Buck Hill, but 7 days a week.

There are lots of things not to like about liberals in general and lefty extremists like Kaki and minnesota farm guy, and that is their preposterous notion that they should be allowed to have a say in what others — their betters — do, or plan to do, or try to do. The rules for who gets to ski in the event are complex, but I gather from my attempting to understand them that Team USA could not merely substitute an alternate for Lindsey Vonn. It appears to be the case that Lindsey skied or Lindsey scratched and the USA had one fewer skier on the mountain. Did she have guts or was she cursed with hubris? I say she had guts and I applaud her effort.

And unlike nearly everyone upthread, I applaud Breezy Johnson.

Breezy's run was epic. She was right on the edge of control the whole run, squeezing out each tiny bit of speed.. Fantastic!

The many faces of Lindsey Vonn. None of them looks much like the "after" picture above, and few of them look much like each other.

2006 seems like yesterday. It's hard to believe that for some people, it's half a lifetime away.

If wars are how Americans learn geography, sports are how we learn anatomy. Without sports how would we know an ACL from a rotator cuff (or know how to pretend we did)?

Are the alpine events like auto racing, with people allegedly showing up just for the crashes? As ABC's Wide World of Sports taught that us the "thrill of victory" is fleeting, but "the agony of defeat" is indelibly etched in the hippocampus.
