He really said that. It's not AI. I checked. From the transcript of the inaugural speech:NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani: "We'll replace rugged individualism with collectivism" pic.twitter.com/dhUqGm2X26
— End Wokeness (@EndWokeness) January 1, 2026
For too long, this city has been defined by division—by zip codes that determine destiny, by neighborhoods kept apart, by a system that rewards the few while leaving working people to struggle. Our campaign was built on the belief that New York can be different. That we can choose solidarity over scarcity, community over competition, and collective action over isolation.
If our campaign demonstrated anything, it is that the people of New York yearn for solidarity. And if for too long these communities have existed as distinct from one another, we will draw this city closer together.
We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.
If our campaign demonstrated that we yearn for solidarity then let this government foster it. Because no matter what you eat, how you pray or where you come from, the words that most define us are the two we all share: New Yorkers....
I will not soften our agenda to fit the comfort of the status quo. We will deliver on affordability, tackle inequality head-on, and prove that government can—and must—work for all New Yorkers....

You’re surprised?
Good and hard, New Yorkers.
Good and hard.
"Individualism" just means rule by the rich. Of course, Mandingo isn't really going to change anything. But if he can make NYC better for the 90 percent who aren't rich - that's a good thing.
“ If our campaign demonstrated” anything it demonstrated that a fringe candidate can win if they run against a grandma killer and a punchline from the 1980s.
Yah enjoy that. I’d like him to give it good and hard so long as it’s with other people’s money and not mine, if only for the example to the youngsters of the tragedies of his policies. Unfortunately I expect he’ll need permission from Albany to drop a deuce…who the heck had Albany as the voice of sanity on their bingo card?
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people, living for today (ah)
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people, living life in peace (yoo-hoo)
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people, sharing all the world (yoo-hoo)
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
The hard solidarity of warm collectivism.
I thought rhetoric was supposed to be the attractive part, but this sounds really dreadful, and I expect it will deliver.
Every once in a while one meets a young, starry-eyed true believer who thinks his bullshit is a gourmet meal, and swallows it whole. This is one of those times.
He's saying the words that have been left unsaid in the past. In that way, he's like Trump.
I'm going to give this my "clear speech" tag.
Just because it's clear doesn't mean he's telling the truth. Who knows what he really intends to do and what he'll be able to do?
Thats how idi (the fellow that kicked his family out) did it
The cobra cometh
He said in his dsa shindigs 'we have to seize the means of priduction' thats straight up marxism
Needless to say, thats not a good thing
"We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism."
"And when it fails, we'll blame the capitalists."
I just can't wait to see how it all turns out. Really. We know that NYC is full of rich people, but - be honest now: How many of them are professional socialists? How many of them are limousine liberals? What's the ratio, 1 : 1,000,000 maybe? Voter irony coming.
Collectivism. They will tell you when there is graphite on the roof, not your own "individual" eyes.
Dat snake-eyed smile and the Stimpy intellect portend much danger for NYC. I say good and hard, Yew Nork!!!
They said the same thing when the Soviets sent all the individuals to the "warm" collective in Siberia...
As mencken was wont to say:
This all sounds very female in tone and ideology.
"We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism."
The delayed reaction to those words tells a story. Wait, what did he just say? oh yea I heard that before, (We are the ones we have been waiting for) I'm supposed to cheer.
The new new Mamdani dispensation.
The "Warmth" of collectivism? So instead of a gulag in frozen Siberia, it'll be some sort of bonfire where all the "capitalist running dogs" and "Christian traitors" are thrown into to be burned to death?
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
I heard it was you
Talking 'bout a world where all is free
It just couldn't be
And only a fool would say that.
@Althouse, how many times do we have to say it? When someone tells you what he is, believe him.
@Iman: I'm more worried about Ren.
Trump replacements is met with "No Kings" protests.
"Who knows what he really intends to do and what he'll be able to do?"
There is history. We have over 100 years of this being said.
New York has a lot of money laying around, and a lot of people who want it. I'd hate to be one of the people who has worked hard to build something there. You are going to need to pay off a lot more people than usual. People who crave being your boss without earning it.
I said it sound very female, but it also sounds very African.
Jeez, Jon Ericson, have you nothing to contribute other than repeat threadbare nonsense in detail?
He's very weak in his actual powers, but this should be interesting. NY is now run by a 9 year old child with a command of words.
When he said ..'the warmth of collectivism", I immediately thought of the Department of Motor Vehicles.
That could be anyone from the gothsm city council
Sorry Quaestor, I denounce myself. Could have been worse. I was going to post a My Little Pony gif.
Yeah, I'm sure it will work this time.
The problem with "equality" (or "equity") is that the best, and perhaps only, way to achieve it is to reduce everyone to the lowest common denominator - if everyone is poor (to borrow from The Incredibles), no one is.
"I'd hate to be one of the people who has worked hard to build something there. You are going to need to pay off a lot more people than usual. People who crave being your boss without earning it."
NYC is full of trust fund babies, hedge fund managers, and real estate manager. They're rich and haven't done any "hard work" in their entire lives. But i feel so sorry for people who apartment buildings if Mandingo gives NYC tighter rent control. How sad to not get 15 percent on your investment every year - while sitting on your ass.
Those were the ones who voted for him
I said of wilhelm (the old commie) he was major bane
Interesting to watch RCocean II morph, quite rapidly, from a conservative to a jew-hating far left collectivist.
Zrimsek: excellent deep Dan cut! CC, JSM
I dunno, half of NYC is women, and they're expert at not letting the warmth of collectivism replace the frigidity of their rugged individualism.
At least with me. CC, JSM
Maybe he was always thus
Starmer is the same sort of commie just with less sauce
“ If our campaign demonstrated” anything it demonstrated that a fringe candidate can win if they run against a grandma killer and a punchline from the 1980s.
And if no one bothers to vote. As near as I can tell, NYC has about 5,126,000 eligible voters; 2,175,000 actually bothered to cast votes, or only 42% of the potential electorate; and Mamdani's 50.9% means that only 1,107,075 could be assed to get out and actually vote for Mamdani, which would be less than 22% of the electorate. Maybe we can call 22% a "Mamdate."
The hedge fund guys live up around Darien and Greenwich or they tossed in and blip between Palm Beach and Yellowstone Club…
Although effendi khan who also defended al queda is the atlantic analogue
So far, so good. (NY Post, not Babylon bee)

For once, I am speechless Althouse. He intends to destroy capitalism. He has never denied it. As for what he is able to do? Much will be destroyed in the miasma of "good intentions.
And he will rule the blocs with political congruence for the select.
Leftists are Diversitists. Deja vu. #HateLovesAbortion
"How sad to not get 15 percent on your investment every year - while sitting on your ass."
The average cap rate in New York City typically ranges around 2% to 3%, with Manhattan often having the lowest cap rates due to its high property values.
I wouldn't invest in property anywhere for that return, and now it needs to go lower to provide that socialist warmth.
"Mamdani fans disappointed by disastrous socialist ‘block party’ without food, bathrooms"
What? No free stuff? Already?
No Kings, or Kinks for that matter. Pro-Choice is a Forward! looking backward religion.
New York Property owners could have doubled their return with no risk by selling and putting the money in T-Bills. That is they could have. Too late now. Maybe some rich "socialists" will offer them top dollar to live in a warm paradise.
It’s like a sitcom from the 70’s, hey kids! Let’s clean out the old city hall and put on a government! We can invite all the other kids to be our wreckers and hoarders!
I assume if you bought a NYC apartment building right now, you'd get 2-3 percent. What if you bought 20 years ago? Or 15 years ago. Lot higher on original investment. All for sitting on your ass.
It has a "Lord of the Flies" feel to it.
I could not possibly comment.
Some of you Americans may be upset that poor Spanish me said something mean about someone you hate.
"Who knows what he really intends to do and what he'll be able to do?"
Well, maybe.
"We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America."
Within four years, NYC will be a wreck.
The cliche was, we give rich investors a good return because they "invest and create jobs". Well what if they just buy and sell property and apartment buildings. They aren't creating any jobs, they're just...wait for it...rent seekers.
BTW, Blackstone and other hedge funds are snapping out single family houses and renting them out. Oh well that's duh free market. well if that's the free market - then to to hell with it. Give me the warmth of socialism.
Somalis from MN will move to NYC. Just watch.
Sabemos como parecen esta cosas y nada de bien
We know how these things turn out and never well
To quote The Norm: "No offense, but it sounds like some fucking commie gobbledygook."
Look, if you found some grift to make money, good for you. Just don't ask me to care if the Government taxes you or finds a way to end the grift.
It's 2-3% of current market value. That value is the investor's money reduced by inflation which was 21% during the Biden administration over the last 4 years. If you wanted to sell your house, how would you take the potential buyer telling you that you should consider what you paid for it 20 years ago as a starting point rather than the current value?
He gave up his apartment for Gracie Mansion. Everyone is equal, except some are more equal.
Worked?
Intended Meaning: He defined this "transformation" as implementing new economic policies that favored the middle class over Wall Street, creating new jobs, and ending political divisiveness.
Well you cant fix stupid
"Give me the warmth of socialism."
Many have said that. Millions of them froze to death.
"We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism."
Hell has a lot of warmth.
“We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.”
You know who is frigid in their rugged individualism? The homeless. Especially this time of year. Maybe Zorro will round ‘em up and put them in a warm collective gulag.

The problem for Mamdani is he is explicitly putting policies in place that destroy the middle class.
He is right about the problem, he is wrong on the strategy to fix it. There are definitely takers and rent seekers in NYC that need to get soaked.
But you have to reward the builders. This is the non-negotiable part. Mamdani doesn't know how to build. He is a trust fund baby.
There is no path where effective execution of his strategy will lead to good outcomes. Hedoesn't know what he doesn't know.
I have no problem with Mamdani soaking the financiers and bankers. They really are leaches on the system.
But you have to subsidize the builders. If you subsidize homelessness and sloth you will get more homelessness and sloth.
In a modern NYC when the collectivist program fails the equivalent "kulaks" will likely be the landlords and property owners. This group embodies rugged individualism through private ownership of housing stock. They'll be painted as hoarders of resources (apartment buildings instead of grain), exploiters of the working class (tenants as the modern proletariat), and saboteurs when economic woes arise from overregulation or redistribution schemes. Mamdami will float proposals to confiscate buildings echoing anti-kulak tactics. When the "warmth of collectivism" chills into shortages or decay, these capitalists will be blamed, and if Mamdami has his way (hint: he'll fail long before this), the property owners will face asset seizures to fuel the communal vision.
His plans about crime will destroy the city before the socialism does.
I think the financial district will be gutted first -- mostly gone to Florida and some to Texas. Those who are going to stay for work for now have made the Greenwich CT housing market boom this year. Record prices even for houses that had been on the market for years.
"We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism."
One neck, ready for one leash.
Socialism and Communism are not warm. They hurt people.
7-8 million people didn't vote.
Perhaps they can pool resources and recall the mad man.
Wall it off now.
Achilles - you really need to swim over to the left, now. You're almost there.
Just because it's clear doesn't mean he's telling the truth. Who knows what he really intends to do and what he'll be able to do?
Yes. He is a phony and the NYers with above average IQ all know that.
He is just another socialist grifter in it for the money and the power.
With AOC and Bernie Sanders as your brain trust, what could possibly go wrong?
The homeless dont like homeless shelters because there are homeless in them, whom the homeless generally dislike.
Goes back to 1989 San Francisco arguments about homeless policy, the last time, as I recall, that this was discussed substansively.
The homeless preferred tents by City Hall. Mayor Agnos let them. Pretty much the beginning of the SF homeless problems.
"Mamdani axes all Adams executive orders in past 15 months, including those defending Jews."
Candyass is excited.
That's not the haircut he campaigned on. Is the olive drab coming out next?
Eee gads. check out the creepy wife.
Madmanni also gave a nice Hitler salute.
Fitting
"Just because it's clear doesn't mean he's telling the truth. Who knows what he really intends to do and what he'll be able to do?"
As someone said up thread, we have one hundred years of abject failure to view.
We also have stellar examples of his policies and the results in California, LA, SF, Chicago, DC, Minnesota , Oregon, Washington state.
Eastern Europe, Western Europe, China, Russia, and a few dozen more.
The leftists on this blog, and elsewhere, finally have their perfect male, who will make their perfect society.
As with the many many other attempts in history, it will end with lots of misery, disease, and many dead.
I look forward to reading the blame game from the left, on why he has failed, and Trump, and then Vance, are to blame.
Reducing people to numbers, cogs, and useful idiots is what all leftists want-they just consider themselves above all that messy result.
History shows us that the first victims of communism are some of its early supporters.
There is a great deal of ruin in a city.
"Mamdani axes all Adams executive orders in past 15 months, including those defending Jews."
OMG, the richest, most powerful group in the USA wont be "defended"? Guess Mandingo's big donors and chief of staff will be upset.
Little Lenin and the new Krupskaya.
Well hopefully the Jew-hating Commie can remove all the money out of everyone's wallets - and bring in the Somali fraud. The goal on the left is to out-do Walz. Mob one up/ showmanship.
New York's woes are already the result of leftist government, so "lets do that harder" seems like a suboptimal plan.
When communists take over, there are always a lot of assets to help the less fortunate and less motivated, but for some reason stealing them never seems to help anybody except the ones in power, who like in Venezuela, eventually leave with all the stuff and go live their capitalist utopia somewhere far from communism. The wealthy may not like it, but they have options and won't suffer anywhere near as much as the ones being lured with small treats like dogs to a cage. Happy New Year!
Madmanni's (D) wife dresses like a capitalist. She might want to re-think her outfits.
It's a classic misstep to forecast doom and bring expectations to the absolute floor, so when NYC limps carried by the rest of the country, you've now created an "exceeding expectations" situation.

I have said it repeatedly that this is no longer right vs left anymore.
It has always been the 1% vs. the .0000001%.
But you are stupid so there is no point trying to explain it to you again.

But the Republicans haven't done anything to solve the problem either.
He is such a perfect example of the Third World princeling 'type.': gobs of parental money that seemed to have no strings attached with combined with midwit intelligence and a complete lack of talent to produce both enormous self-regard and massive insecurity.
Guys I knew like this in college always seemed to become obsessed with blonde all-American 'normal' girls from middle- or working-class families who had zero interest in them, and when their big, dramatic effort to 'win' the girl didn't work they would melt down somewhat spectacularly and have to disappear back to Mumbai or Istanbul or Beirut for a semester or two.
Mamdani is going to turn out to be internally fragile, vindictive, and unable to compromise. His decisions will be 100% ideological (and his ideology has zero connection with reality) and he'll be completely unable to compromise or course-correct. NYC is about to get a repeat of the doubling down on failure that we all suffered through from '08-'16.
Diversity, redistributive change, Pro-Choice religion, a Twilight faith, a secular state. A Democratic Socialist.
Achilles - tell us about all the republicans in positions of power in NYC.
"Mamdani fans disappointed by disastrous socialist ‘block party’ without food, bathrooms
Scores of Zohran Mamdani supporters who braved the freezing temperatures to witness the new mayor get sworn into office were let down by the celebration."
LOL! The second time Mamdani supporters are surprised that the Mamdani organization isn't shelling out their own money for the events.
"When he said ..'the warmth of collectivism", I immediately thought of the Department of Motor Vehicles."
I thought about those horrific people lit on fire in the subways by homeless bums living there.
The Daily Mail reports
“NYC First Lady Rama Duwaji wears $600 boots to socialist mayor husband Zohran Mamdani's swearing in ceremony”
Does this mean all NYC women will be issued $600 boots — or more probably, that some are more equal than others within “the warmth of collectivism.”
I suspect his supporters expected him to feed the crowd with loaves and fishes.
Funny, our resident Leftists ( except for the newly-turned Ocean and Achilles) ignore this thread. Nothing to say. Very curious, doncha' think?

This may be what residents notice first: an explosion of street crime. The media there (except the Post) will try to ignore or pooh-pooh it.

Perfect response!!!
I read the transcript yesterday afternoon, and that phrase jumped out at me. I saw somewhere a clip from Dr. Zhivago that had Yuri returning home from the Soviet army and finding that there were a dozen families living in his house. He says, "Yes, this is better. More just." Because, of course, that is what he had to say.

Here’s a list of all the news networks who have not covered Zohran Mamdani’s salute:
- NYTimes
- CNN
- Washington Post
- MSNBC
- NPR
- USA Today
- Reuters
- Axios
- ABC News
Every single one of them wrote stories on Elon Musk’s “salute”…
…do you get it yet?

But the Republicans haven't done anything to solve the problem either.
@Achilles, the last real Republican to serve as mayor of New York was Rudy Giuliani, who left office a full quarter century ago. (Gun-grabbing RINO Bloomberg doesn’t count.)
Warm like the Borg.
Warm like Stalin.
Warm like Pol Pot.
Warm like Hitler
Warm like Castro.
Warm like Mao
So much warmth. So many people missing.
He also said "community over competition".Not receiving attention because not as glamorous as Ann's highlighted line, but these 3 words do not represent America. America is competition, with winners and losers.

Achilles - tell us about all the republicans in positions of power in NYC.
All of the money comes from federal welfare programs.
So Trump, Vance, House Republicans, Senate Republicans, and the Supreme court if you want to count them.
A majority of Mamdani's voters were people who Trump promised to deport. Why isn't he deporting them?
Mamdani doesn't get elected without Trump and Congress's help. They promised to fix this. They are letting Democrats take our money and give it to people who don't belong here. They have thrown exactly 0 traitors in jail.
Ilhan Omar is still free and raking in millions of dollars. That is on Trump.
You want to pretend what has been going on for the last 11 months
That wasn't a good argument.
Actually, yes it was. Under Giuliani and “broken windows policing,” the New York City crime rate fell below the national crime rate. Through privatization he reportedly vastly improved delivery of city services. What about that don’t you like?
Donald Trump is not your puppet. If you want a President that operates precisely to your priorities, you will have to run for the office yourself.
I guess the people who don't believe that he means what he says are the same people who don't beleive that the Koran means what it says. Eyes that don't see . . .
He'll back-track and say it was a reference to improving trash removal.
I watched the inaugural speech live on local NYC tv. I was surprised at how sycophantic the reporters and analysts on the various local news shows were. Out of several shows, I only counted one reporter who expressed the mildest skepticism about Mamdani's promises, and her colleagues acted as if she had farted on a crowded elevator.
I'm not surprised noticing their locsl news
