"There is no evidence that Gladis and her pod are attacking humans or that they intend to harm people at all."

"In fact, wild orcas have never been seen treating people as prey. They do, however, have a thing for 'fads,' where they take up behaviour that has no obvious benefit. One famous example involved a female in the Pacific northwest who, in 1987, was seen wearing a dead salmon on her head. The trend spread. Other orcas across Puget Sound were soon spotted with their own 'salmon hats.' And then, as abruptly and as mysteriously as it started, the fashion fizzled out. Other orcas have been seen draping kelp over their backs or heads.... To scientists, the behaviour with the boat rudders looks similar. After wrenching one free, Gladis and her companions tend to bat it around for a while, then lose interest and swim off.... One [researcher] believes the orcas see the yachts, with their long detachable rudders, as 'giant toy dispensers.'"

From "Orcas blamed for yacht attacks are speaking their own language/Scientists studying killer whales linked to hundreds of encounters with boats near Gibraltar have discovered that the pod communicates using a unique dialect" (London Times).

Stop stealing all our food - you Chinese bitches.

This may also explain AWFL behavior in e.g., Minneapolis. Just female whales with nothing better to do. CC, JSM

Better watch out. If you get near her she’ll rip off your rudder.

Someone tell the AWFLs that native Greenlanders get all their livelihood from the salmon fisheries, and a US takeover would shut that industry down for security reasons. Then you can have more whales wearing salmon hats! CC, JSM

BTW, don't Inuit get to hunt whales for cultural reasons? Trump should say he's just trying to save the whales....CC, JSM

At first I thought Gladis and her pod would refer to white women interfering in ICE operations.

The “salmon hat” thing seems like a highly questionable bit of scientific observation. “You saw it, too? I’m going to publish!”

Any environment-related science seems to lean heavily on junior-high girl’s group dynamics.

Those cute Orcas also hunt and attack whales, which creates a quandary for the anthropomorphicisers.

Lazarus ayon kay ...

It took me a minute to realize that Orcas weren't Tolkein characters or ruminants on the African savannahs. In my day we called them "killer whales," but I guess they protested and got that changed.

I tried that too, after wearing an onion in my belt went out of style ...

An Orca "female in the Pacific northwest who, in 1987, was seen wearing a dead salmon on her head" started the new Mega Sushi fad in Seattle.

Well, that's a load off my mind.

I grew up in Bellingham WA and from my bedroom window I could look across Puget Sound to Orcas Island. I never saw any whales there, though.

I’m charmed by the idea that if you put something on your head that makes it a hat.

So Orcas are just large aquatic cats, in other words.

Probably, no one has told them "friends dont let friends tear off yacht rudders."
