Marie Antoinette came in for a lot of grief because of her frivolity and extravagant tastes. However, the excesses of the self indulgent are nothing compared to the focused spending of the disciplined. How much did Napoleon spend on those 10,000 flatboats he had built for the invasion of France versus the amount spent by the Queen to build the Petit Trianon.....The Shah of Iran got a lot of criticism for that elaborate shindig to celebrate the Peacock Throne. How much have the Mullahs invested in their nuclear program, not to mention that terrific, up to date air defense system?

My granddaughter was christened this morning and, in addition to the religious significance of the event, it speaks so much to the cherished traditions of family.

The rite was conducted in the same baptismal font, the same pews, and the same chapel as seven generations before her. She was wearing the same gown as at least five previous generations, with her great grandmother in attendance, who also wore it.

And it’s one of the most beautiful Episcopal churches in this country; a National Historic Landmark. It also survived the occupation of Maj. Gen. Ormsby Mitchell’s troops during a certain dispute between the states. Thankfully they observed its exterior lintel reading ‘Reverence My Sanctuary’.

Such a beautiful day.

This is especially true with politics. Staying in Congress until you can't sit upright for a 30 minutes is unforgivable and selfish.
For me, I gifted one of my companies away to my much younger employees a couple years ago, and they have done a great job with it. They completely changed the business model and customer base, and it's all for the better. They don't do everything the way I would, and that's just fine. They kept the respect and care for employees and the ethical standards I hope I instilled. I still work there a full schedule, mostly in maintenance work, but they don't pay me or share any profits with me. That's one of their most astute decisions, and great for the bottom line. Like I said, not how I would do it, but good management if you can pull it off. The young deserve at least what our parents gave us.

There’s a sweet movie currently available on the Criterion Channel (or for rent/purchase on Amazon Prime Video): A New Leaf (1971). It’s a gentle, violence-free black comedy starring Walter Matthau and Elaine May—with May also writing and directing.
The humor is handled with an unusually light touch. The film is based on the short story “The Green Heart” by Wisconsin author Jack Ritchie, who specialized in clever, twisty short fiction. Many of his stories (including this one) first appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine. His work is always sharp, economical, and very entertaining. Movie and stories highly recommended.

US President Donald Trump pressed top oil executives to invest in Venezuela's reserves at a White House meeting on Friday, but was met with a cautious reception -- with ExxonMobil chief executive Darren Woods dismissing the country as "uninvestable" without sweeping reforms.

Woods told the group that Venezuela is “uninvestable” based on “the legal and commercial constructs and frameworks in place today,” adding his company’s assets had been seized by the government in Caracas twice before.

Despite Trump's confidence that a deal was formed, Energy Secretary Chris Wright pointed to Chevron Corp. as the "one specific pledge" from an oil company to help revive Venezuela's crude production. Chevron is the only major U.S. company still operating in the country.

It is also a dumb talking point because ExxonMobil wasn’t going to invest in Venezuela with Maduro in place. In fact, Maduro threatened to invade, annex, and nationalize Guyana’s oil and gas industry. That is, Maduro threatened to steal ExxonMobil’s investment in Guyana.

So what point do these idiots, fly and Kak, think they are making?

If nothing improves in Venezuela in the near term, removing Maduro has protected investments in neighboring countries, including Trinidad and Tobago. Venezuela will need to decide if it wants to improve, and thanks to Trump, they may get an honest election soon with the results they want.

I was assured that the oil companies would always do Trump's bidding. Or was it the other way around?

I can understand why people who work in government or academia spin dire theories about industry; their work product is not anything you can touch or count or sell (I mean, you CAN touch, count, and sell reports and so forth, I suppose, but they tend to be unwanted by their targets), so they're not dealing with markets. They have no personal context for what businesses, especially commodity or manufacturing (capital-intensive) businesses, do, and on what basis they make decisions.

Another group largely without personal context in this way: lawyers. Corporate lawyers sometimes garner market context through their work, though it's not automatic. Firm lawyers - I think some pretend because they have to, but among those I know, almost all seem to have little regard for how business decisions are made - even among firm lawyers who work exclusively with energy companies, they're happy to help the process along, but it's all about the deal and they can get... let's say "snippy," when the business climate affects the timing. You can probably put bankers in this bucket too: do the deal do the deal so the deal.

Oil companies will invest in Venezuela when they feel sufficiently assured that they're not going to have to walk away from their stake again.

These are my thoughts on waking, before even a sip of coffee, since I like my coffee lukewarm and it's sitting next to me cooling as I type.

I think it is noteworthy that Powell's statement has to be seen as representing the position of the Fed as an institution, not only his personal response to the allegations. I do applaud Powell and the Fed for their clear words. It's high time the central bank stands up for itself. Not sure if this will suffice but at least I am somewhat heartened that some Republicans in congress are also not too happy -- see the statement by Thom Thillis.

No one here ever claimed non-ironically that Trump is perfect. But he's perfect for what needs to be done now, and the results speak for themselves. All the democrat street theatre in the world will not obscure the booming economy that came roaring out of 2025. Anyone bringing up tire shots is stupid for a variety of reasons.

First is there was no angle because she pointed the vehicle at him.

Second is because a vehicle with a flat tire is just as good at killing people as a vehicle with air in the tires.

Third is that hitting a tire sized target that is moving at speed is not something you actually do in a real stress situation when there is a deadly weapon moving at people.

When Bernanke and Yellen agree and team up on something is quite an achievement. That's how you know things went terribly wrong.

Central bankers are usually low profile and in the background,
particularly when it comes to anything touching politics. To get them this riled up is quite an achievement. At least the current
Fed Chair and his predecessors have shown some backbone here as compared to a lot of other cow-towing US institutions.

If the GOP had any sense of self preservation, it would work with the Democrats to see the back of Trump. The question is whether it happens before November 2026 or after. Trump seems to want to accelerate that decision to before the November 2026 election and force the Senate's hand.

After the election, the composition of Congress will change. It is a question of how many of the remaining Republican members are Trump loyalists first, and party loyalists second. A lot of the people who are going to lose their seats will tend to be in more moderate districts, so the composition of
the Republican Party, especially in the House of Representatives may be an even more concentrated MAGA-fied version. However, the Senate might see a shift, especially over an issue like the independence of the Fed (which matters
significantly to many major Republican donors and donor interest groups).

That’s consistent with your usual turd polishing narrative reframing but let’s analyze above the rabbit hole.

Let’s assume this investigation team had already made these statements and accusations of you and your job performance;

“He’s got some real mental problems. There’s something wrong with him. I’ll be honest, I’d love to fire his ass. He should be fired. The guy is grossly incompetent."

Had called you a “numbskull”, “moron”, and said your “termination cannot come fast enough”?

I could go on and on but also consider if the one investigating you is a vindictive lying egomaniac hellbent on never losing.

No no no John Mosby, not like Biden. That narrative shift is so amateurish and beneath you.

Does or should ICE have absolute immunity? It’s a fair question considering Trump’s right hand man says they do. If they do, that blows a major hole in the right wing counter Gestapo arguments, dictator protecting, rule of law, and constitutional protections.

Talk about dishonesty and bad faith arguments, invoking Biden while polishing yet another Trump turd takes that to a new level.

The attack on Powell and the Fed is largely seen as a blunder that won't succeed and may backfire, depending on how long the investigation lasts. The WSJ likened this to "King Henry II idly importuning some knights to rid him of Archbishop Thomas Becket, only to be surprised when they actually did it."

In this case, the investigation of Powell (rather than his murder) caused one or two members of the Senate Banking committee to block any Trump nominee to the Fed until the investigation is terminated. One Republican vote, along with all Democratic votes on the committee, is enough to block Fed nominations. And the temporary term of one Trump appointee ends January 31st. So, investigating Powell could lead to Trump having less influence over the Fed, not more.

Moreover, Powell's term as chair ends in May, but he can choose to stay on the rate-setting board of governors until 2028, denying Trump another vacancy to fill. Powell may well opt to stay on, if only to spite Trump.
