Was talking with the students in my ScienceFiction class about the damage that LLMs are being used to inflict on their generation through social media scams and frauds of various kinds.
We noted that for all of human history, the ability to talk--understood more broadly as the ability to speak or write-- was an indicator of humanity that could not be faked. If something talked to us, it was human, and so our brains have not evolved any defenses against things that talk: we can't help feeling that they are human.
So we have almost no defenses against LLMs that can imitate human communication, setting us up to be victimized by people willing to use them for nefarious ends.
I was extremely impressed by how well the students had thought this out and how well they handled the discussion.
One of their temporary solutions until we evolve better defenses was to make AI companies strictly liable for anything their AIs say. Period. If this radically limits what AI companies can do, or bankrupts them by forcing them to pay massive settlements to the people they harm through addiction to the AIs, by advising people to commit suicide or use drugs or harm others, or by convincing people to abuse or abandon family members . . . oh well.
I can't say I disagree.

These kinds of breathless reports make my head hurt, honest to God. What, do the ballots have 'Fraudulent' printed across them, in giant red block letters? The whole problem with the ballots was that procedures were ignored, procedures that ensured the ballots were valid. Signature matching with the outer envelopes, etc etc. The whole corrupt beauty of the 2020 election fraud was that, once the procedures were ignored, it became impossible to prove any given ballots were fraudulent, because they become anonymous, which is why verification is so important. So reports like this are just spinning up the outrage machine yet once again, to be punctured at a later unannounced date. Give a rest Fox. Report the results - when they're DONE convicting.

@Yancy Ward, I was wondering the same thing - or, was there a third encounter, where Pretti got his rib broken? He had said that ICE agents had pig-piled him, resulting in a broken rib - but that didn't happen in the encounter shown in the video released today, he tussled with a couple of agents but wasn't taken down. Funny how the picture begins shifting as the evidence comes in - and we're still waiting on the bodycams. By the time all of the bodycam info comes in, there will be quite a collage, no? Spitting, assaulting, kicking out taillights......more to come.

This is a weird parallel to US immigration controversies. This is presented as a royal decree, but in Spain such things are really cabinet decisions. Nobody has a clue what the king actually thinks, and nobody is asking him.
About 80% of the half million affected (which is huge in Spain, thats over 1% of the population) are from Latin America. Latin American immigrants are quite welcome in Spain, even the ultra-nationalist Vox party is generally supportive. In part because their bete noirs the Catalan separatists are anti-immigration. Vox is against this decree because it rewards illegality, almost all the affected are people who have overstayed their visas.

The search at Fulton County’s main election facility in Union City sought records related to the 2020 election. It appeared to be the most public step by law enforcement to pursue Trump’s claims of a stolen election, grievances rejected time and again by courts and state and federal officials, who found no evidence of fraud that would have altered the outcome.
It also unfolds against the backdrop of FBI and Justice Department efforts to investigate perceived political enemies of Trump, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
FBI agents secured an area around the large warehouse building that houses the county elections hub with yellow tape and could be seen loading boxes from the building into trucks. FBI spokesperson Jenna Sellitto confirmed that the boxes contained ballots. Among the 2020 election documents sought are ballots, tabulator tapes from the scanners used to tally the ballots, electronic ballot images and voter rolls.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in August 2023 obtained an indictment against Trump and 18 others, accusing them of participating in a wide-ranging scheme to illegally try to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. That case was dismissed in Novembe r after courts barred Willis and her office from pursuing it because of an “appearance of impropriety” stemming from a romantic relationship she had with a prosecutor she had hired to lead the case.

Alexander has filed a motion to dismiss the suit. It seems much more reasonable to suspect that Pretti was involved in at least a third altercation that broke his rib, and that this video (if it is Pretti as reported via video analysis) predates that altercation. Vandalizing a vehicle, accosting officers, and then being let go might have emboldened him to even more violent actions. ICE/BCP likely don't feel they have time to arrest every single person who assaults them. The paperwork alone would bury them. It is certainly something the insurrectionists are counting on. It is also a timeline consistent with Pretti deciding to go armed. There are reports that he had not being carrying previously. You can make the snarky observation that ICE/BCP (as far as we know) are the only group known to have shot anyone involved in the actions. So if Pretti had discovered sometime after this video that they would do more than just get in a brief shoving match he might have decided he need more protection, and it wouldn't be from the illegals ICE/CBP were targeting.

But 30 or 40 years ago that same concern applied--even more strongly--to photographs and videos. When photoshopping and other techniques came along, people had no real defense--they believed what their eyes told them. (As a trial lawyer, this was a real concern to me--a photo was prima facie evidence of what it purported to depict).
But people have adapted (for the most part) and are reasonably wary at this point about the veracity of what appears in photos. The same thing will happen with AI-generated content (soon enough, let's hope).

I was thinking about Rosa Parks this morning - specifically the fact that she was part of an op. I was listening to Based Camp this morning after a pretty long hiatus, and I was reminded of why I listen to them. I think Malcolm is often a jerk to his wife and has one of the more irritating podcast manners I've encountered (and these are only my top two objections to him), I think Simone frequently knuckles under to him way too easily - but sometimes they have interesting insights.
Today they were talking about Maslow's hierarchy of needs - actually about self-actualization, but about how Maslow redefined it for his hierarchy. The insight I hadn't ever considered was this: by setting up "needs" as a hierarchy, he implied - actually if I remember my long-ago lessons about it accurately, he said explicitly - that you have to fulfill all the underlying levels in order to rise to the next level. So, in order to achieve (or even to attempt to achieve) self-actualization, all your other needs must be met first.
The outcome, therefore (says Malcolm), is that you have to pursue what amounts to hedonism - the satisfaction of every bodily need and desire - before you can turn your attention to anything (let's say) larger.
They being who they are, they tie this observation to the behavior of what they call the "urban monoculture" - which amounts to the progressive left. It's necessary to Do What Thou Wilt until you feel fully satisfied in it, before you are eligible, so to speak, for self-actualization. So the more hedonistic you are, the more self-indulgent you are, the closer to you are to self-actualization.
I thought this was interesting and worth more thought.

Please use the comments forum to respond to the post. Don't fight with each other. Be substantive... or interesting... or funny. Comments should go up immediately... unless you're commenting on a post older than 2 days. Then you have to wait for us to moderate you through. It's also possible to get shunted into spam by the machine. We try to keep an eye on that and release the miscaught good stuff. We do delete some comments, but not for viewpoint... for bad faith.
