Today on Mark Halperin's 2WAY show, a guest viewer was a cop's mother. She said she and her son are more afraid that he will have to shoot someone, than that someone will kill him. Because all the post-shooting crap we put cops through now basically ends your life anyway.

Unsaid by her or the panel was that this is precisely the goal of the Left: to make cops afraid to do their jobs. Even if they get killed from hesitation.

Only a few minutes into the first ep and I unreservedly recommend it. Rapid-fire campily erudite dialogue. You can almost smell the damp wool and tobacco residue in everything. No out-of-control colorblind casting. So many great British actors that you can't use The Guest Star Did It Rule: they're almost all stars. Way cool. CC, JSM

I was listening to a community playlist on Amazon Music titled 'Jeff Lynne' the other day. It had a song (and in a couple of cases, two songs) from various albums that Lynne had played on, and in many cases produced. Many were familiar, all the ELO albums and Lynne's solo albums, and Traveling Wilburys and The Move albums, as well as albums by George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. I didn't know that Lynne had produced on albums for Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Del Shannon, Randy Newman, Dave Edmunds and Bryan Adams, as well as some work on the Beatles Anthology albums.

And then there was an artist I was totally unfamiliar with: Julianna Raye. The song on the playlist was "Peach Window." I listened to it and liked it, then I listened to her entire album from 1993, Something Peculiar. Jeff Lynne had produced the entire album and played many of the instruments. Richard Tandy of ELO played piano on the album as well. And as with any project that Lynne was involved in and played on, some parts of the album had a real ELO sound. The album was not a commercial success, unfortunately, as it came out about the time that grunge overwhelmed everything. I suspect that recording a studio album with Jeff Lynne might be a problem in that you can't really take it out on tour without Jeff Lynne. A year later, Lenny Waronker left Warner Bros. and Raye was left without a recording contract. It took nine years for her to do another record, with a very different producer and a very different, jazzy sound. Her most recent album, Hush, came out in October 2025, and it has a lot of Latin rhythms to it; I really liked the song "True Union" off that album, a strong bossa nova song.

So here are some samples of Julianna Raye's work. I'm pretty sure you'll hear about her again in December, because I've been playing "Peach Window" to death since I found it. I love the song's energy.

The decline of the dollar is the variable to watch.

Inflation increases interest rates. Uncertainty about inflation even more. A falling dollar causes international holders to sell. Who wants to hold a depreciating stock of value (it is a self-evident contradiction). If Trump takes over the Fed, the Market is going to take over the Interest Rate. (Trump doesn't understand who runs the joint!)

I look for rolling contractions. Private credit and private equity are going to take big write downs. Value is going to concentrate in SEC-registered securities trading on open, regulated exchanges. Regulation actually has real value. Same abroad. Credible government is also a value creator and sustainer. Private credit and private equity have had a lot of forward momentum because they are fee and commission driven projectiles. These propellants eventually exhaust themselves. Eventually the US is going to rejoin the world of credible governance.

Will the Karen's be mobilized into greater activism by the death of Renee Goode or will they step back? I think they will step back. Whoever wants activism from Americans must contend with the fact that Americans are leading the good life and most have made great efforts to get what they have. This includes learning to talk the way you need to talk to get ahead or at least, stay even. And Americans, underneath, despise anyone who doesn't realize that most of talk is regarded by most of the talkers as necessary blather. You don't act on it unless you are stupid. I'm not being cynical; I'm saying that dying to keep the Somali frauds going won't sell. Dying to keep a murderer from being deported won't sell. Moms dying and leaving behind young children to keep foreign pedophiles near those children - it won't sell. Why do they even try? Why did Budlite happen? Why the Jaguar ad? The elites of this moment are utterly out of touch and the left is one of those elites. If you're white, you know Renee Goode was being a clown and a fool and no one stepped up to warn her. They'd have lost status and they were silent. That's the left as it really is. Who wants to leave the good life for the goof life with left careerists?

Over time, the movement has been infiltrated and co-opted by genuine racists, misanthropes, greedy billionaires, and hucksters who pose as religious figures. This isn't a cohesive group bound by shared values or beliefs; instead, it's a collection of hurt and resentful people being exploited by opportunists. I'm not sure how that can be resolved.

These comments from the lefties the last few days here at Althouse are similar. It is almost as if none of them actually watched the videos- that they are all simply repeating talking points they picked up from the media- all of which are completely contradicted by any of the videos available. One other thing I noted is that the leftist takes everywhere simply don't analyze the videos at all except for one particular case- they often use a still from one of the videos that show the front wheels turned to Good's right- but that still is taken after the vehicle has already made contact with Ross and after he has fired the first shot.

This afternoon, my wife informed me that this evening, my daughter, who is 21, will be out and about, and she (my wife) and my son, who is 17, will be doing certain Scout-related things. So I was "fending for myself". Meaning, cook your own dinner tonight.
Very good. I went out back, to the freezer with the grass-fed beef, and took out a package labeled "beef round steak". It looked like about a pound and a half, plenty for me. And I sliced up some potatoes, to make roasted wedges. Soaked them in olive oil, and sprinkled garlic powder over them. Put the potatoes in the oven at 400, and started pan-frying the steak. Also, melted some butter, and added rosemary and thyme. Hey, last Summer I planted a spice garden, so spices are easy. Just go out and pick them. A little oregano too, although I'm a little puzzled by how the oregano has turned out. Apparently, there are lots of different kinds of oregano.
So, it was all good, and I gobbled up my dinner, although, the truth is, grass-fed beef is not as tender as the grain-fed beef you get in the supermarkets. But that might be because I buy half a cow. That means you don't get to pick and choose. You have to go find recipes for things like "stew meat".
Anyway. I made my dinner, and it was good. But there was quite a bit of meat left over, and also some potatoes. And when my son got home, he asked me, just to be sure, whether I was done. And then he Hoovered up the remaining steak, along with the potatoes.

Truth is, I thought it highly likely my son would get home hungry, and would eat that chunk of steak, which is why I took the less attractive piece, and also refrained from finishing off the potatoes.

The only way I can explain this, is that I somehow regard my son as an extension of myself. Why else would I take such pains to make a fine dinner, on the off chance that he would want it?

Now, you might look at that, and ask, what my wife was thinking. She and my son were going to some Scouting meeting, and would not be present for dinner, so I needed to feed myself. Fine. She is a vegetarian, so she usually handles her own meals anyway. But how was my son supposed to get fed? Half a sandwich off some folding table at the meeting?
Well. I incline to the view, that my wife knew full well, when she told me that I was "fending for myself", that I would, in fact, cook dinner for my son. Just in case. As, in fact, I did.

This gets into the question, of how a marriage works. A marriage starts with an exchange of vows. A new prehistoric discovery in a Wisconsin lake has revealed the existence of an advanced culture in America during the same time as the ancient Egyptians.

Researchers unearthed six previously undiscovered canoes from Lake Mendota, including one that archeologists said was approximately 5,200 years old - older than the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is at least 4,500 years old.

Overall, 16 ancient 'dugout' boats have been found during excavations of the lake since 2021, all carved from individual tree trunks using fire and simple tools like stones and shells.

Researchers from the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) said the new findings rewrite what we know about history in North America, revealing that humans on the continent lived and developed into organized communities much earlier than previously thought.

I’ll admit, I’m not a fan of the tactics ICE uses. However, I know the blame goes to sanctuary policies and those that enact them. As hawkeyedjib noted, ICE is arresting foreigners in this country convicted of violent crimes such as murder and rape, often of minors. That’s bad enough, but these arrests are happening on our streets.

Why? Because sanctuary politicians won’t hold these violent criminals in jail or prison long enough for ICE to arrest them there and deport them. To protect these foreign criminals, the politicians release them before ICE can arrive. Then they go a step further and tell their residents that ICE is there to deport innocent people.

Renee Good would be alive today if any of the people that hawkeyedjib mentioned were in jail waiting for transfer to ICE. And if Democrats hadn’t have let them in the country to begin with, there are numerous other victims that would still be alive or not dealing with the trauma of rape. The really sad part is sanctuary has spread not just to foreign criminals, but all violent criminals. Progressives want them to be free on our streets to continue committing violent crimes. And they’ll call you a Nazi for wanting to be safe.

Some of my channels are a good distance away, like 50 or 60 miles, and the require a carefully aimed attic or roof antenna, directional in nature, but having done that, from Vermont, I can get not just the local channels, but Canadian channels, so I get Hockey Night in Canada from CBC, Montreal, for instance. And since you asked about it, let me brag, I also bought a little Tailscale server for my local network, and this allows me to watch the channels I get in Vermont from anywhere I happen to be.

Anyway, put your address into this website https://www.rabbitears.info under signal search map, set your height to 30ft and enter your zip code into the search box, then press the "put pin at center of map" button, and move the pin to your house, and then press Go, and it. will give you a listing of all of the stations that you can reasonably reach, and how strong the signal is. Don't use a plastic antenna if you are far from your target, because if you have to mount it outdoors, it gets torqued by windy nights, leading to signal dropouts, and even indoors, they are not directional enough to reach distant stations.

I was able to get the stations showing a signal margin above about 18 with a directional antenna, if you are really rural, you need a large antenna to get the ones with the low numbers, and if the number is below zero, the noise is going to swamp the signal, probably.

TV signals propagate horizontally, so it is important that your antenna not only be aimed to get distant stations, but level. Police radios, for instance, are FM hand propagate their signals with a vertical polarity, and so whip antennas pointing straight up work, but if you have rabbit ears, the best way is to extend them horizontally, and orient them orthogonal to the signal you are after.

My friend lives near a large body of water and a large airbase, and so there is little ground clutter, and he is able to get a good enough signal with one of those cheap flat antennas, but there is just too much ground clutter for me, so it was a lot more work.

Anyway, there is a guy, "Antenna Man" on YouTube who is kind of interesting too, but most of what I worked out about it, I learned from AI, which is pretty good about stuff that has been extensively written about, like TV reception.

Jaq చెప్పారు...

I mentioned the hole in the Honda mirror housing yesterday and was promptly called a "liar" by Michael Fitzgerald. To resolve the mirror question raised in my 12:11 post on the cafe thread I rewatched the video recording by ICE agent Ross while walking around the Honda SUV.

1. As the cop passes the driver window video shows a clean intact side mirror and housing (matches car body color). No dirt no hole.
2. Still photos (see KOMO News URL below) clearly show two bullet holes immediately after the event, one in the windshield and one in the mirror housing.

Looking forward to the official report to confirm the facts and I stand by my preliminary conclusion. Rude Fitzgerald never backed up his statement.

Kakistocracy చెప్పారు...

Initially, I was inclined to side with the ICE officer because of his prior experience—being dragged by a vehicle during an earlier attempt to evade arrest—which could understandably make him hyper-vigilant about cars in close proximity. That kind of trauma can shape how someone perceives threats.

However, this was a completely different situation: a random encounter with a US citizen who showed no obvious threatening behavior. She wasn’t a fleeing suspect actively trying to harm anyone.

So my main question is: Why did he reach for (and ultimately draw) his gun at all? What led him to assess that this non-threatening civilian might deliberately try to run him over with her car? The interaction seems inconsistent with genuine high risk—he slowly walked around the vehicle while holding his cell phone (apparently filming), allowed her wife to approach him closely, and didn’t take immediate evasive action.

Overall, it appears he severely overreacted and misjudged the level of danger in this specific encounter. The prior incident may explain his mindset, but it doesn’t justify escalating to lethal force here.

FoxNews reports: "Since Saturday, ICE officials have released several examples of the "worst of the worst" criminal illegal aliens arrested during the surge in deportation operations in Minnesota. Child predators, individuals with murder charges and drug traffickers are among those on the DHS's list.

Leny Odemel Ramirez-Santos, a criminal illegal alien from Honduras who was charged with sex offenses against a child and driving under the influence; Edwin Amable Ashca Ninasuta, a criminal illegal alien from Ecuador charged with committing sexual acts with a minor; Lenda Neh Mama Epse George, a criminal illegal alien from Cameroon charged with cruelty toward a child and domestic violence; German Adriano Llangari Inga, a criminal illegal alien from Ecuador charged with homicide; Puol Both, a criminal illegal alien from Sudan convicted of making terroristic threats and several burglaries; and Somsalao Thonesavanh, a criminal illegal alien from Laos convicted of drug trafficking and selling a synthetic narcotic, are among the "worst of the worst" shared by DHS on Monday. I can think of one or two who actually did seem to "celebrate" her death, something I deplore (have at me, guys), but I've been reading every damn comment for all these days and I can't think of a single one that said or implied that her "rudeness" was the justification for her death. She was shot because in the judgment of the officer whom she moved her car -accidentally or intentionally - to be in a threatening position toward, and then accelerated toward, she was a potentially deadly threat to him. Was his judgment of the level of threat correct? No one can say, now. But we all know very well that in situations like that, our legal system affords the threatened LEO leeway because it's going to come down to a momentary perception and decision.

If an anti-Minneapolis-police MAGA protester had done exactly what Renee Good did - use a car to obstruct them and then accelerate toward one of them, accidentally or intentionally - as a few Minneapolis police were lined up in front of the courthouse to prevent ICE from entering, would the police officer have been justified in shooting?
