"Dolphins darted and leaped around the capsule as it bobbed in the Pacific Ocean, awaiting retrieval and transfer to a recovery ship."

I'm reading "Watch: Nasa astronauts return to Earth after evacuation from space/Crew 11 splashed down off California on Thursday morning after travelling around the Earth 2,672 times during their time onboard the International Space Station" (London Times).
Four crew members from the International Space Station have returned safely to Earth, completing the first medical evacuation in the 65-year history of human spaceflight....

The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule... streaked across the night sky over California in a blazing ball of plasma as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere, reaching exterior temperatures up to 1,900C (3,500F) before parachutes deployed to slow its descent.

Musk’s company rescuing more astronauts is so routine now that the ICE-obsessed Corporate Media could hardly spare a few seconds to celebrate the return of Crew 11.

Dave Begley చెప్పారు...

Shouldn’t it be “lept” around the capsule?

Eric the Fruit Bat చెప్పారు...

The medical evacuation makes sense because it's always best for a surgical team to go in and get the chestburster before it comes out on its own.

I really hope one of them got pregnant in space. I want to meet a starchild.

Ann Althouse చెప్పారు...

"Shouldn’t it be “lept” around the capsule?"

No, "lept" is at best a misspelling. But to assume you mean "leapt," that's an alternative to "leaped," but leaped isn't wrong.

The reason the capsule stays at ISS was always to provide for emergency rescue. This one is curious, because if needed, the could return the crew to Earth in a couple of hours, and this took days. That gives some hint that the medical situation is stable.

Iman చెప్పారు...

Yes, Eric the fruit bat @5:56AM! Precisely.

Mike (MJB Wolf) చెప్పారు...

They did say it was “non-emergency medical issue” stressing no one was in critical need.

This perfectly represents Musk's primary philosophy of refocusing attention efforts and production on atoms and not electrons. I like the fact that he is the richest man in the world that he happens to not be a money changer. Do I wish she wasn't such a weirdo? An ideal world maybe but in our entropic universe, for a human being to accomplish what he has accomplished you have to be more than a little weird.

Kakistocracy చెప్పారు...

Iranian citizens are fortunate to have access to Musk's Starlink, which is helping keep the world informed about the ongoing situation there.

"Shouldn’t it be [leapt] around the capsule?"

During Christmas I helped entertain a family of visiting Brits. While dining at a local pizza parlor, I had a conversation with the 17-year elder son of the family.

I wrote out ATE on a napkin. How do you pronounce this word, I asked.

"Eight", he said. Not et, like Jed Clampett.

No, tell me how you pronounce it in Surrey, not here to be understood by the locals, said I.

"I did", he replied.

The Americanization of English continues apace.

Howard చెప్పారు...

Not only is English being Americanized worldwide, American English is evolving out regional accents to adopt the neutral Pacific Northwest / Northern New England accent.

I'm sure it's all just a ploy to get our minds off the bigger issue: What about the Epstein files?

Beasts of England చెప్పారు...

It was a non-emergency medical emergency.

Howard చెప్పారు...

It's getting much rarer to hear a Boston accent here in center Mass.

Key Characteristics
Non-Rhoticity: The most famous trait; dropping the 'r' at the end of words (e.g., "park" becomes "pahk") or before consonants, as noted inVoices.com.
Intrusive R: Adding an 'r' where it doesn't belong, linking words like "idea" and "of" into "idear of it".
Vowel Changes: The "lot" vowel often sounds like the "caught" vowel (the cot-caught merger), and the "bath" vowel can be drawn out (the BATH-TRAP split).
"Broad A": A distinct, longer "ah" sound for vowels in words like "father" and "spa".

rhhardin చెప్పారు...

"Lept" is okay. It's archaic but not that archaic. In addition it tells you how it's pronounced so is even preferable.

Howard చెప్పారు...

An Al Cowling emergency. The capsule was a white bronco.

The keffiyeh-wearing Democrats aren't happy with Musk or Starlink. We're pleased to see Kak isn't among them.

They've been quietly carrying water for the Iranian theocracy for decades, but panic arises. If the mullahs fall, Hamas will, too. We can't have the Joos peacefully owning a homeland, can we?

Quaestor చెప్పారు...

A regularized past tense will be regrettable. I'll miss leapt, and sleeped will make us all sound silly.

They can come down “somewhere” on Earth in an hour or so, but to come down in a specific location, you have to wait until the orbital ground track is in the right place. You also have to consider the weather at the splashdown location. In addition, it took time for the crew to load the capsule with their stuff. If it were a critical, time sensitive emergency, they would have come down sooner, but apparently the issue is serious but not critical.

Musk might already have nukes in orbit. He may have already told the governments of Earth, “I have to be alive and free to send a daily don’t-shoot command to the satellites. If I don’t, they will start decaying their orbits. You could be a recipient of the Boer Bomb if you arrest or kill me.” CC, JSM

One of the scenes in Snowcrash that made it an Iconic book was when the police were protecting the antagonist from the drug dealers because he had a submarine warhead in the sidecar of his motorcycle.

That was the point when the protagonist realized he would never be the toughest guy in the world.

The story I read was that there's only one escape/return module. So, if one person left for Earth the other three would be Lost In Space for who knows how long.

Earth below us
Drifting, falling
Floating weightless
Calling, calling home
Across the stratosphere
A final message:
"Give my wife my love"
Then nothing more
Far beneath the ship
The world is mourning
They don't realize
He's alive
No one understands
But Major Tom sees
"Now the light commands
This is my home
I'm coming home"
