"Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland..."

"... and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

Writes President Trump, at Truth Social.

ADDED: I just want to note that I have seen that Trump kept calling Greenland "Iceland," and I'm not buying the theory that he was merely calling it an ice land and not mixing it up with the country named Iceland.

I thought of another excuse that could be attempted. Trump likes to rename things, notably the Gulf of Mexico, so maybe part of his plan is to rename Greenland, which, after all, was misnamed in the first place. I do not think it's a good idea to use a name that another country is already using, but at least, he's not calling it Trumpland.

None of the EU countries wants to fight and defend the Arctic Region -- none. Trump may not end up owning Greenland, but he might end up with a lot more latitude in the Arctic than he initially sought.

Perhaps Trump is saying "Iceland", because they're throwing it into the plan. He knows people will go nuts with him saying it, and they will turn out to be wrong.

Same with Svalbard and the Northern Baltics -- he's looking at you, Norway.

Including Canada, that would give the US control over 2/3 of the Arctic, with a promise to extend Golden Dome to cover Europe over the pole.

Asked how long the deal would be, Trump said it would be "infinite."

"Uh, infinite," he said. "There was no timeline. It’s forever. It’s signed forever."

"But you haven’t signed anything yet, right?" a reporter asked.

"They’re working on the details of the deal," Trump said. "But it’s what’s called an 'infinite deal.'"

Leif's father Eirk the Red did discover, settle, and name Greenland, and what's probably being garbled is the comment recorded in Eíriks saga rauða [Erik the Red's saga]:
Þat sumar fór Eiríkr at byggja land þat, er hann hafði fundit ok hann kallaði Grænland, því at hann kvað menn þat mjök mundu fýsa þangat, ef landit héti vel.
[That summer, Erik went to settle in the country which he had found, and called Greenland, because he said people would be eager to go there if the land was named something good].
The North American settlement was at northernmost tip of Newfoundland, L'Anse aux Meadows [a corruption of L'Anse aux Méduses: Jellyfish Bay]. But Vinland proper, where the wild grapes grew, was somewhere further south, possibly as far south as Cape Cod bay, but far more likely to be Prince Edward Island (so Anne of Green Gables lived where Vikings had walked 850 years earlier).

The very best resource for this material is Gísli Sigurðsson's The Medieval Icelandic Saga and Oral Tradition. The first 2/3 of the book will be tough going for anyone who doesn't really know the Icelandic Sagas, but non-specialists can easily understand and enjoy the final 1/3. Gísli demonstrates that if you interpret the two Vinland Sagas the way we interpret oral traditions, they provide sufficiently accurate navigational information to sail from the Greenland settlement to L'Ans aux Meadow and from there to Prince Edward Island.

Me too. Let's all thank Trump for sinking the stock market with his proposed tariffs. Forget about your IRAs, pensions, money market funds, 401Ks, lets all just rejoice!!! Make America Great Again!!!!

Democrats on this thread have eaten an extra bowl of stupid for breakfast today. The stock market is up ~15% in less than a year.

You know Trump and the USA must have done pretty well over the last day or 2.

It was George W. Bush that changed the US from cooperative multilateral leader to unilateralist; Trump is just following a course first charted by Bush II. It was Bush who financed imperial America with multi-trillion-dollar borrowings from abroad, mostly China. The Republican defeat in 2008 did not clean out the failed fundamentalism; it defeated what was left of northern internationalism and moderation and migrated the survivors to the politics of Dixie. Trumpism is Stars and Bars Americanism reborn.

Ultimately, Trump II is not about decline but rather retreat resulting from defeat -- something quite different. Trump is failing in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Far East. Full-spectrum mediocrity.

Remember a week or two ago when the DOW set new records? Remember how Kak came on praising Trump? Now it's off those record highs and it's the end of the world.

And sorry, it was Bill Clinton who took us on this course, that's why they pushed George H W Bush aside, he left Iraq after the war aims were accomplished and the neocons were big mad.

Right now, due to EU policies, 1/4 of the population of Iceland is recent immigrants. They may very well, given that they have taken up the waving of Icelandic flags, similar to the St Georges Flag protest in the UK, want to turn it to ICEland.

Is there a source for that? There is a source that Greenland exported beef, so parts of it were almost certainly green if they were exporting beef in commercial quantities, I doubt he made the name up out of thin air. "Flat Rock Land" is basically a land of flat rocks, for example.

Sheesh. He's a little dyslexic. Change Iceland when he meant Greenland indicated that he wasn't reading off a teleprompter at the time. He kept calling Greenland a block of ice.

So the actual ask was having our golden dome up there.

Key Arctic Routes:
Arctic Corridor (Polar Route): The most direct route for Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) from western Russia (like the Kola Peninsula) to the U.S. East Coast is directly over the North Pole, passing near Greenland and Iceland, which are strategically vital for missile defense.
North Atlantic Trajectory: Missiles can also follow paths across the North Atlantic, curving over Iceland, Greenland, and Canada towards the eastern U.S., as seen in flight paths between cities like New York and Moscow.
Why These Routes?
Great Circle Principle: On a sphere (Earth), the shortest distance between two points isn't a straight line on a flat map but a curve (the great circle). This path minimizes flight time and fuel for aircraft and missiles.
Strategic Importance: Greenland sits directly under these critical mid-course flight paths, making it crucial for early warning and missile interception, according to Business Today, Army University Press, and Wikipedia.
Missile Flight Dynamics:
ICBMs: ICBMs follow ballistic trajectories, arcing high into space, but their initial launch and mid-course phase are designed to follow these shortest global routes, often appearing as curved paths on flat maps.
Example: A flight from western Russia to New Jersey might take around 20 minutes, following the shortest path, says Euro-sd.

I am sure the Terbium and Dysprosium came up.

Makes me laugh to see you think I’m mad, why would I be? Trump failed big time, I’m not a Trump cheerleader.

Owning Greenland is a personal interest of Trump, not a core national interest of the US. That makes it unpopular among Americans. It also creates a difficult position for European allies. They are partners with the US as a nation and institution—not with Trump as an individual.

Russia and China have subs armed with ICBMs, so fail to see how crucial Greenland is. The plot of House of Dynamite featured the question whether North Korea might have any also.
