So many of these deadly force incidents come up because officers are afraid/unable to use less-deadly force early in the encounter. So for example we've taken away batons for the most part because of the bad optics, which means the officer with substandard kung fu has to escalate to spray (not always effective), taser (sometimes ineffective, sometimes too effective), or the gun.

A baton or lathi charge into a crowd of interferors looks bad, but a few broken ulnas later, you have restored order, there most likely won't be an interference operation tomorrow, and everyone is alive.

Instead, the forces of order are left playing silly games with the interferors, and some of the latter get bold enough to try something that gets them killed.

There are a lot of them out there at certain times of the year, feeding on seals. They'll hit a swimming seal and carry it clear out of the water like a trout hitting a mayfly. You can find videos of it online. It's impressive.
The water was colder than hell with a big swell. I found myself slamming against the top and the bottom of the cage over and over as it rode the swell just below the surface. It was miserable.
Visibility was very poor. I got seasick in the cage and had to open the top hatch, stick my head out and puke up a blueberry muffin I'd eaten for breakfast. I felt a little better after that.
It was one diver at a time in the cage for 30 minutes per turn. We each got 2 turns in the cage. Longest 30 minute periods of my life. I took both my turns, but it wasn't fun. Worst of all, I didn't see a single shark.; 09-01-26 8:48 PM
