How will you observe the profound occasion?

We have fog this morning but it should be gone by solstice time. Hopefully I observe from the 7th hole in red numbers…

Derve ayon kay ...

Profound?

Derve ayon kay ...

Natural, not profound.
No need for word inflation today.
Just keep it honest, as we should everyday...

I will be enjoying our second to last day here in St. Croix. Watching football at a beach bar, maybe some snorkeling, definitely some rum punch. Yesterday will be hard to top, so we're taking it easy today. (Yesterday we rode horses in the Atlantic, an otherworldly experience)

Old and slow ayon kay ...

Scattered clouds and warm (39F) this morning, so it should be a good sunrise while I'm out running. It still feels odd to be running so late for the sunrise, but that's on the the turn now.

Humperdink ayon kay ...

I will celebrate tomorrow as the days (read: daylight hours) will get longer.

R C Belaire ayon kay ...

It's another December Sunday. That's it.

On the 23rd day of December

What I do every day I’m home. Fishing.

Time for the celebration of the return of the Sun and with it the growing of all green plants for all of the food chain. It’s a cycle forever and ever, amen.

Food beats starvation every time.

Eric the Fruit Bat ayon kay ...

Obsessively watching THIS.

Kirk Parker ayon kay ...

Go to bed early

One of my favorite days. No special celebration, but it’s on my calendar. Here comes the sun(shine)…

Rob ayon kay ...

I will note that the days are getting longer! I'll smile!
Then it's back to the day in, day out routine.
Happy solstice everyone!

My dog will get his quarterly tick medicine.

Morning gig, brunch, football, evening gig, more football. It's Christmas season and people want to hear some live music.

Everybody out there have a good day! Ho Ho Ho!

Surfing a sweet little swell here in Florida. Water is 70° F and the air will top out at 73°F. Waves are waist to shoulder high, well formed and glassy. This 72 year old is going wait a bit for the sun to fully claim a warm azimuth and then I'm going catch a good buzz, ride some bitchen' (1950's surf lingo) waves and enjoy this month that has an R in it. Cowabunga (1960's surf lingo) dudes and dudettes.

Sacrificing a horse to Odin. But I don't own a horse and I don't believe in Odin.

Did you know that beginning Wednesday, December 10, the sun will begin setting later each day. According to the sunrise-sunset chart prepared by the U.S. Naval Observatory for our latitude (Salisbury, MD) on December, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, the sun sets at 4:41 p.m. On December 10, it sets at 4:42; on December 15, at 4:43; on December 18, at 4:44; and so forth. That doesn’t mean the days are getting shorter. The sun is rising later each day until January 8 when it begins to rise earlier. Thought you all wanted to know. Surf’s up!

I am going to take a walk on the beach this afternoon. It will be in the high 70s, with a gentle breeze. I'll be counting my blessings.

Group ski on the Birkie Trail -- OO to Telemark and back. Bit windy on the hills but mostly nice. Skiing in a winter wonderland..,

By cursing the darkness.

Steve Witherspoon ayon kay ...

It was written, "The Winter Solstice. How will you observe the profound occasion?"

It isn't profound in any way, it's simply annual observance of an astronomical "event", if that's what you choose to call it, everything else associated with it is nonsense.

Peachy ayon kay ...

celebration that the days are now getting longer.
yay.

Walking the dogs, as it turns out.

I will be writing last minute Xmas cards for mailing first thing on Monday.

I will remember my parents who were married on December 21, 1942 during World War II. My father was a lieutenant in the infantry.

April and September both have rs in them, but as I recall living there, both were mostly 90 degrees and 90% humidity, but enjoy the bragging days, but the nicest Florida weather that I ever experienced doesn’t match a northern midsummer, six weeks of heaven on earth.

Narr ayon kay ...

I'll try to send a Solsticial Salutations email to my three or four remaining old friends, and catch them up to my doings--the stuff you people have already read here.

Isn't that ironic?

I was planning to build a fire but, after it came up, the sun felt so warm I decided to skip burning any logs.

Makin' jerky.

Christopher B ayon kay ...

As Guimo notes, the sun is still coming up later in the morning til January so bah humbug to the Solstice. I'll celebrate in January. At least it isn't self-inflicted like DST.

Original Mike ayon kay ...

Stonedome! Happy Solstice!

Original Mike ayon kay ...

While I like the darkness, I don't appreciate the sun's low angle of incidence. This time of year it shines directly onto my "reading Althouse" position in the house. Our roof has deep eaves; most of the year the sun doesn't hit my reading spot. I will appreciate its ascension.

Meade ayon kay ...

Stonedome indeed, Mike!

I burned a leftist. Then collected the ashes. I use the ashes to kill weeds.
On average the days will get longer by two and a half minutes a day until they don't. I read that somewhere.

Howard ayon kay ...

Every moment on this mortal coil is profound, but we forget. The solstice is a good reminder.

Mason G ayon kay ...

The solstice doesn't matter to me, I'm waiting for when the sun stops rising later (which would be Jan. 8).

Anthony ayon kay ...

going to run a trail in shorts and a t-shirt here in AZ where it's almost 80 today, and fix a toilet and baseboard. Go me.

MOfarmer ayon kay ...

Celebrating! Son's girlfriend received Phd on Friday. She and her family are coming. Starting to smoke a brisket in about an hour. MIZ!

Art in LA ayon kay ...

I'm hoping it clears up a bit this afternoon. I want to get a picture of the sunset as the sun "touches" the Pacific -- if you listen closely, you can hear the sizzling sound. I'm amazed how much the sun moves between solstices. I'm also looking forward to more daylight hours!

Joe Bar ayon kay ...

We are roasting the infidels in their hovels.

If I were a real man I would get together with my man dudes and sit in the woods playing drum music on a hollow log.

Aggie ayon kay ...

A day on the Caribbean beach, perfect weather, some nice body surfing, joy with the toddler grandchildren shrieking in the sand and waves, and a nice, fresh Bake and Shark - a local sandwich made up fresh on the spot with fried bread, shark, about a dozen different condiments to pile on top, including a blistering hot sauce. Yummy if you know how.

mccullough ayon kay ...

Next year we should all go to Argentina to celebrate.

Mr. T. ayon kay ...

Sleep?

After all it's the longest night of the year.
