Lift off is tough for the larger birds. Must be the water resistance.

I went for a drive to Fort Niagara once, along the shore of Lake Ontario and I saw a couple of swans, but it turned out that they were a well known pair of mute swans that had escaped to the wild. These birds are on my bird bucket list. Best we can do here is snow geese, which are impressive, too, especially when you see a flock of a couple thousand lift off from the ice in the shape of a tornado.

I enjoyed seeing the Pelicans when I was fishing Monona on opening day in May. Huge birds.

I've seen that as an explanation of why the Pterodactyls evolved to much larger size than birds. They had four feet on the ground and could run and leap into the air.

Where do they keep the swans during the frozen over winter months? Gotta find them a warm building and feeding people.
