"People often ask her how, as a famous person, she still takes the Tube, but the reason why is simple — nobody is looking up from their phones."

"'It’s heartbreaking,' she says. 'Nobody’s looking into the f***ing world any more.'"

From "Kate Winslet: ‘Young women have no concept of what being beautiful is’/At 50, the actress doesn’t care what people think of her any more. She lets rip about social media, weight-loss drugs — and why it has taken her so long to become a director" (London Times).

I don't like the expression "let rip." It's too reminiscent of "rip one." But let's read this OED entry for "to let rip." which is defined as "to act or proceed without restraint; (also) to speak violently," which I don't for one minute believe that Kate Winslet did, even as she chided women for — whatever — lip injections and Ozempic.

The first of the historical quotes comes from California in 1857 and gives some insight into the court system:
1857 — We have no courts, nor won't have, until next summer, unless it be one-horse courts, and those we thought we'd ‘let rip’, so that the Justices and Constables, could pay their liquor bills. Hutchings' Illustrated California Magazine August 88/2...

1917 — We could not see the Germans very well, but whenever we saw a little smoke our fellows let rip at it. H. F. B. Walker, Doctor's Diary in Damaraland iii. 44

1958 — He just let rip with left and right in a steady stream of hooks, jabs and uppercuts. Health & Strength 19 June 31/1...

1998 — Your drug-use pattern was to make do with 'ludes and booze for most of the month and then let rip with a stonking crack and scag binge.
Spy (New York) March 27

2005 — So, yes, I probably did let rip with a bit of vocabulary.
N. Hornby, Long Way Down 13

You can be sure Kate Winslet never has a stonking crack and scag binge, but I'll bet there's a movie where she smokes a cigar with an air of defiant liberation...

Couldn't find one with a cigar, but that's a lot of defiant liberation with cigarettes. It's more subtle with a cigarette.

As for "stonking," it does have a OED entry. It goes back only to 1980 and means "Excellent, amazing; considerable, powerful." A Britishism.

A lot of people would pay good money to have Kate Winslet rip one. The much more gifted Celia Imrie recently did so on The Traitors. CC, JSM

I don't recall hearing "let rip" much but "let 'er rip" comes back to me as the phrase for not holding back when taking some action like opening up throttle on an engine.

"Rip one" seems to me to be something that became smirkingly popular later and I don't think I ever made a connection between the two.

Thoughts on Kate Winslet:
1. Read the article. Not much there there except that at 50 she likes getting old. Yeah, catch me when you’re 70. She mentioned several actresses growing old with grace. Please. I don’t have the receipts but all of them (in my opinion) have paid a visit to their friendly cosmetic surgeon.
2. “Kate Winslet was famously slimmed down (airbrushed) for a GQ magazine cover in 2003, which she criticized, stating she didn't want to look like that and that the magazine reduced the size of her legs, leading to public discussion about body image and digital retouching.” I liked that. Amy Odell once complained that the retoucher never gets photo credit.
3. Winslet’s directorial debut movie is about someone dying. Not another one. It reminded me of a discussion Jenny Lawson had with her husband. He comes home to her crying while reading John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars (a YA novel about teenagers with terminal cancer). Victor says to her “What the shit, Jenny? It says it’s about terminal cancer patients in the very first sentence. Why would you even read that?”

“Lets rip” is an ugly phrase that should be reserved for ugly actions—angry rants, violence. “Let rip” feels a bit different, less gross—like loosing restrained energy. Note that the least violent of your examples puts it in quotes, as though it’s not quite the right term, but they’re using it anyway.

She looks pretty good to me but she should smile more.

When the van Winkles needed some sleeping done, they let Rip. When the Torn family needed some acting, they let Rip.

And then there are those of us who don't give a rip.

I gave Mare of Easttown a shot mostly out of respect for Ms. Winslet but I had to bail during the second episode because, frankly, I didn't want those dirtballs in my living room.

Let 'er rip - sounds like something walter brennan or Gabby Hayes would say.

As for Ms. Winslet. People grow old. Women hardest hit.

I admire her resolve to be unguided by the Hollywood method, center-of-madness, good for her. It would seem she has preferred to keep herself grounded with family and private life. So, it is possible. Makes you wonder about those Hollywood creatures that can't.

Kate was quite a chubby teen, so she's probably been hounded about her weight for years. She has a point about the young and beauty. I'll risk sounding like a crabby old man now and ask, "What's with all the tattoos and piercings?"
·
"Rip a new one" has to be a lot newer than "let 'er rip." I don't think I've heard "let rip" without the "''er" in the middle and used to say "let's go."
·
"Mare of Easttown," "Mayor of Kingstown." Much room for confusion there.

I admire anyone who speaks up against puffed out lips. I have never met a woman with those lips whose opinion I respected.

I guess let er rip is about some physical activity that is going to rip your pants or shirt, but you just say let er rip and do it anyway. Synonyms would be “fire in the hole!” Or “Shit fire and save matches, fuck a duck and see what hatches!”

I’ve not seen most of Kate Winslet’s films, however I can recommend “The Holiday”. As a romantic comedy where both her and Jack Black play against type.
