"New music's cool, but have you ever heard old music?"

"Have you ever heard 'You Don't Have to Say You Love Me' by Dusty Springfield?"

I know you have, but have you truly experienced its depth and grandeur? Let Owen Cutts demonstrate:

I appreciate his enthusiasm.

One of my favorite 60s records is Dusty Springfield's I Only Want to Be with You. The production, the vocal, just fill me with energy and a desire to, well, be with her.

Wilbur చెప్పారు...

And lest we forget, Son of a Preacher Man was smoking too.

My parents Big Band music is always on my turn table. Any morning you'll hear Helen Forrest and The Benny Goodman Orchestra or Frank Sinatra and the Tommy Dorsey Band, the Beatles American version of Rubber Soul, maybe some Chet Baker followed by some Subdudes. Then some Christopher Parkening playing Bach on guitar. You get the picture. Just because it's old music doesn't mean it's not good music. Don't get me started on my vinyl collection.

Amexpat చెప్పారు...

Blue-eyed soul - one of the many great sub genres that 60's music gave us. I'm lucky that I was born time for that to be part of my soundtrack.

I vow to work ‘You’re taking the Michael’ into a conversation this week. Think I see an opening..

Love me some Dusty!

Wilbur: as a 1st anniversary for my second wife, I put together a music video with photos (the old way) using cassette music, actual photos laid out on a table, and a video recorder. For the concluding third, I arranged for a DJ friend of mine to do an intro to "I Only Want To Be With You" personalizing it to her, followed by the song and waited up by a radio to tape it to my cassette. The final product was very good IMHO. The wife went "meh".

Who is this guy?

mindnumbrobot చెప్పారు...

Old music like that is why I invest so much in my home audio system. It can transport you. Same with a great symphony such as Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in C minor. My wife doesn't understand, but goes along with it anyway.

@ Marcus Bressler
Sometimes the dogs don't like the dog food, so to speak.

"Who is this guy?"

"Owen Cutts aka ‘Mr Cutts’ is a producer/songwriter from North West London who has worked with some of the most respected and influential artists in the industry. He has producer credits with; Stormzy, Kojey Radical, Greentea Peng, Maverick Sabre, Jacob Collier, Clean Bandit, JGrrey and Tom Walker to name a few."

I finished scanning my record collection before dawn this morning. The App "Record Scanner" estimates my 300 disc collection at $7,600. I doubt I could get $300 considering their condition. I'm considering abandoning them on the back step of the local used record store.

Mr. Forward చెప్పారు...

Old Music is Dusty.

Dave Begley చెప్పారు...

Respected and influential artists my ass. Put that guy and his artists up against Barry Gordy and Motown.

Last night, my daughter surprised us by bringing home her Model UN team after a competition. 25 teenagers packed into my modest living room and dining room. They took over the stereo and listened to Frank Sinatra and debated the merits of The Beatles.

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

Good song. I've never heard it before or heard about "Dusty Springfield" real name - Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien.

Dusty is sorta of a weird name for a female singer. Yeah, she's down and dirty. She's dusty.

Joe Bar చెప్పారు...

I like Dusty Springfield. I have some her music in my collection.

That Owen Cuts guy, though, he gets a little too excited. And, I don't recognize any of the performers in your citation.

tommyesq చెప్పారు...

His delivery is Andy Kauffman-esque. Can't tell if it is a put-on.

tommyesq చెప్పారు...

Also, between his odd, jerky movements and the quick-cut editing, he has a feel of Max Headroom.

Charlie చెప్పారు...

Eh, that song's OK.......but it's no WAP.

"old music" 58 years? Now do the greatest song writer of all time, Claudio Monteverdi.

I would say that old music is more human than most of today's stuff, because you actually had to have humans sit down and play/sing it. Today, everything is computer generated and autotuned, and drum machines are used more often than human drummers (and even where a human is playing drums, click tracks are used and then the producer/engineer of the track can still go into the file and move every hit to be perfectly on the beat). It feels empty.

I do think, however, that with recorded music, I can only go back so far before sound quality issues make it hard for me to listen. I love jazz, and really like the early Miles Davis and John Coltrane era stuff, but even though I recognize the genius of Charlie Parker and like the melodies and complex solos he played, I can't get past the dramatic difference in sound quality.

She really got a full contingent of saint's names, didn't she?

tommyesq చెప్పారు...

I think he was referring to old recorded music, whether intentionally or not. Recorded music became popular in the 1910's but records that could hold more than about 3 minutes per side did not appear until the 30's.

Ann Althouse చెప్పారు...

Picture confectioner's sugar on doughnuts — the word "dusted" is used to describe the sifting of the sugar onto the surface of the doughnuts. Doesn't that seem feminine?

WhoKnew చెప్పారు...

That was fun but I don't think I could take a steady diet of his videos. He's right about the production values of the song. Pretty amazing.. Dusty in Memphis is just a fantastic album. Shelby Lynne recorded an album of Dusty Springfield songs with mostly acoustic arrangements that is what got me into Dusty's original music. It was all over the radio when I was a kid but I hadn't listened closely to it before.

Dagwood చెప్పారు...

It's easy to forget some of the great orchestral oldies of the Rockin' 60's. This one was a gem. Another that comes to mind is the title song to Goldfinger.

Wa St Blogger చెప్పారు...

I agree with WhoKnew. A little over the top. His enthusiasm is fine, but I don't relate. Someone I do watch who has a great ability to profile the greatness of older songs: "What makes this song great" series is Rick Beato. I've watched scores of his videos for the very same reason I WOULD watch Cutts if he toned the drama down just a bit. I have gained a lot more appreciation for the artistry by watching videos like that.

Lazarus చెప్పారు...

Does the song have extra pathos when one takes Dusty's unhappy lesbian afterlife into consideration? Similar with Lesley Gore over here maybe.

Jim Gust చెప్పారు...

Try her cover of The Windmills of Your Mind

Wince చెప్పారు...

I can't tell whether he liked it or not.

Rory చెప్పారు...

If someone had told me ten years ago that I'd go on youtube and watch other people watch or listen to things, I'd have thought they were crazy.

Steven Wilson చెప్పారు...

Not too long ago I ran across some Youtube videos of young women listening to the Righteous Brothers. They appeared not just to be in love but aroused.

Skeptical Voter చెప్పారు...

Cutts could listen to Jay and the Americans "Cara Mia"; almost any Roy Orbison, or Percy Sledge--there's stuff there that's virtually operatic. And by gum, those singers could carry a tune, unlike today's hip hop codswallop.

Jaq చెప్పారు...

I will be honest, when Daydream Believer by the Monkees comes on, I stop to listen.

Charlie Currie చెప్పారు...

I came upon Cutts on Instagram a few days ago and like him a lot. He's energetic and enthusiastic. He does a short sweet version of the "first time hearing" this group or song YouTube videos, without having to listen to the entire record. Also, he's music knowledgeable - he understands what it takes to make a hit record. Shut up. Ha

Clyde చెప్పారు...

There is still some good music being made, but I especially enjoy it when I find something old that I didn't hear the first time around, because I was listening to something else instead. A lot of times it ends up being serendipitous; I get a mood playlist on Amazon Music, there's an interesting song that catches my attention, I go more in-depth on the artist and find something else that I really like on a second or even third tangent. I'll be telling a story like that in a few days on the open thread with a concrete example of this phenomenon.
