Who is Callie Holtermann? Given her statements about whiteness, I wanted to know if she is white.
I found this article about her from a few weeks ago: "She Knows What Gen Z Is Thinking/Callie Holtermann, who covers entertainment, internet culture and trends, combs TikTok — and her own conversations with friends — for story ideas" (NYT). There's no photograph of her, but there's an illustration that presents her as a white woman (with an iPhone in front of her face).
And here's her bio page at the NYT, with a clear photograph and a clear statement of what she's there to cover: "I cover a wide range of topics across entertainment, internet culture and fashion, often with the goal of contextualizing social trends. I am especially focused on Gen Z, whose interests and struggles I am eager to reflect in the pages of The Times." That is, she is not there to handle racial matters.

They understate and overstate based on the biases of those departments.
My hypothesis is that theoretical and abstract thinking are overrated and concrete problems solving is under rated.
People who sit in colleges all their life will score higher. People who go out and do things will score lower. I am quite sure that there are a lot of college professors that would score higher than Elon Musk on the average IQ test.

IQ tests were developed for perfectly practical reasons, and they remain very useful for those. Binet started it to ID kids with education problems, and there certainly still are education problems where IQ tests will help. Tracking for instance.
The US armed forces picked up on it in a big way and still uses a developed version, the ASVAB (Hernstein&Murray used ASVAB data a lot in "The Bell Curve"). Also used for tracking in military training.
Many US companies copied the military and used to do IQ testing untill barred for doing so, which is a pity as they ended up using proxies like educational attainment, which is vastly less accurate and enormously costly. And which tends to filter out, for instance, talented 16-year olds.

As far as practicality, speaking of non-US experience that I know of, ex. IQ tests work very well at ID'ing likely lads for training as diesel mechanics and welders.

I think it was more that they were adapted by the US military.
And the ASVAB was not like the college IQ tests. I don't have my results handy but I remember the general outline. The topline ASVAB score was a percentile. When I first got the results I was disappointed because I thought 99 was below average.
There are about 10 subcategories with spatial awareness being the only one I remember off the top of my head. There was something about math and something about electrical.
The army uses General Technical score to determine whether you can do a variety of things like go to OCS. You had to score 110 on the GT to go to OCS so my retard section leader had to study to retake the test.
The results of the ASVAB were made available to the people doing psych evals for us when we were trying to get into volunteer units and get clearances. That caused problems for me.

Skin color:
The preference for lighter skin has nothing to do with race and everything to do with wealth and class. Before modern tools like Google and LinkedIn, one of the main indicators of family wealth - and therefore marriageability - was skin color. Darker skin suggested more time spent in the sun, meaning the person (male or female) was likely a manual laborer or at least did outdoor chores. Lighter skin, on the other hand, implied that the person had enough money to employ servants and avoid outdoor work.
The “pale skin = high status” idea goes back thousands of years in many cultures (ancient China, India, Europe, parts of pre-colonial Africa, etc.) and originated long before modern concepts of race existed. It indicated that you didn’t have to work in the fields, that you had money, that you were good marriage material.

I think IQ tests don't tell us much except who will be good at technology and math because they measure pattern recognition in space.
IQ is measured by the Raven matrices. This is the latest and the greatest and the most unbiased method of measuring intelligence - they say. It measures pattern recognition of shapes in space. Using this measure Asians score highest at 108 on average, whites are 100 and blacks score 85. But is pattern recognition of shapes in space the only kind of intelligence or is it just a kind of intelligence which is very widespread in European and Asian culture? What about sounds in time. Suppose we had IQ tests based on pattern recognition of sounds in time? Such a test would result in those good at music coming out on the top. Does anyone think that blacks would be at the bottom? Jazz was invented by the blacks and what is jazz? Isn't it a set of sound patterns that get "turned around," "turned backward," "stretched out," and so on. It is a paradigm of what blacks are very good at on average. And some whites would be good at this kind of test - think of The Art of the Fugue. That's as European as you can get and it's all about pattern recognition of sounds in time. But still, you know, we wouldn't be dominant.
In America, we have Europeans - good at pattern recognition in space, good at science and technology; w have blacks good at pattern recognition of sounds in time, good at music. Raven matrices is just a style of problem that us handy to use in a prepared printed test. Entirely different sorts of problems have been used, among them straight neurological reaction time.
"Sounds in time" (music) has been tested. As it happens musical ability is very "g-loaded" as well, that is it overlaps highly with other cognitive tests.
Race is fascinating. It is an easily detectable leftover of the history of human genetics. I got sucked in in 1995, when I bought the founding book on that, Cavalli-Sforza's "The History and Geography of Human Genes", led there by his article in the Scientific American. Of course that is way obsolete now, its such a fast moving field.

That caveat must be made almost anyone who moves to the US recently from another country that was not subjected to the US public education system does better at math than whites that are in our public education system.
We have a generation of children who will have a permanent reduction in IQ because of what we did to our children during COVID.

My uncle (by marriage) was involved for many years in an international comparison series of math and science, TIMMS. I suggest you look it up. The US does worse than it should given how much it spends on this, but its hardly the wprst.

I do have to point out that the US keeps people in 8th grade that every other country removes from school before they take this test.

Please use the comments forum to respond to the post. Don't fight with each other. Be substantive... or interesting... or funny. Comments should go up immediately... unless you're commenting on a post older than 2 days. Then you have to wait for us to moderate you through. It's also possible to get shunted into spam by the machine. We try to keep an eye on that and release the miscaught good stuff. We do delete some comments, but not for viewpoint... for bad faith.
