Said Old and slow in last night's open thread, "Sunrise — 7:13." It was only the second post of the day. The first, "Tea with Larry," at 9:29 a.m., was also an open thread. It consisted of 2 photographs and the single sentence, "It's a no-news Saturday, the day after the day after Christmas."
It was the day after the day after Christmas. But it was not Boxing Day. Boxing Day is the day after Christmas, and there were 5 posts on Boxing Day. So what was this day after the day after Christmas? Do we call it nothing but the day after the day after Christmas (or, if we say Boxing Day, the day after Boxing Day)?
It is the Feast of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist. Those who have grown weary of the Christmas holiday might turn to the Feast of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist for fresh inspiration.
But now it is December 28th. Is it a back to normal day? Will scanning the headlines in the usual way yield blog posts with the natural flow that is my long custom? If not, is it a day with a name — like Christmas, Boxing Day, and the Feast of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist — a day we might observe with special activities?
It is a special day, but it's a day I wouldn't want to focus on: It is the Feast of the Holy Innocents:
The Feast of the Holy Innocents was one of a series of days known as the Feast of Fools, and the last day of authority for boy bishops. Parents temporarily abdicated authority. In convents and monasteries the youngest nuns and monks were allowed to act as abbess and abbot for the day. These customs, which were thought to mock religion, were condemned by the Council of Basel (1431). In medieval England children were reminded of the mournfulness of the day by being whipped in bed in the morning; this custom survived into the 17th century....

The internet has informed me that December 28th is also National Call a Friend Day, National Card Playing Day, National Short Film Day, and National Chocolate Candy Day.
The day after the day after Christmas is St. Stephen’s Day in the Eastern Church (i.e., Orthodox). St. Stephen’s Day is Boxing Day in the Western Church. And it lets me post about one of my favorite “Christmas” Carols, which is actually a St. Stephen’s Day Carol — Good King Wencenslas. Based on an historical “king” (actually the Duke of Bohemia) the song ends with this statement — “Therefore Christian men be sure, wealth or rank possessing, He who will now bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing.” A maxim to live by 365 days a year.
It doesn't matter what day it is, or what you name it. Thank you for posting interesting items.
We have the 12 days of Christmas, but 'muricans don't really like Christmas. Its the puritan in them. Thank God, "the Holiday" is over, and we can all get to making money and watching football on New years.
In 567, the Council of Tours "proclaimed the twelve days from Christmas to Epiphany (that is, through the end of 5 January, as Epiphany begins the following day) as a sacred and festive season, and established the duty of Advent fasting in preparation for the feast.
Good Lord, you're right. Christmas was a bit hectic this year with multiple family events, and I honestly thought it was the day after Christmas. I'm slipping, but at least Christmas is well and truly done for the year. I'm going full recluse next year and spending it alone in Ireland.
So what was this day after the day after Christmas?
It’s the day we box up the day after Christmas: Boxing Boxing Day 📦 📦.
A restful day at a cafe would be most appropriate.
There can be no uninteresting day. For if there were, there would have to be a first one. And being the first uninteresting day would make it interesting. Proof by contradiction. QED.
Damn straight it's a special day! It's my birthday! The old and slow tag fits me perfectly.
Speaking of St. John the Evangelist...
I’m with my folks in my hometown for Christmas week. I grew up attending St. John the Evangelist parish and school, and on yesterday’s feast day the parish had a special dedication for its newly finished sanctuary art project.

Absolutely gorgeous work. It was a one-year project by one artist (who happened to attend high school with one of my brothers). It was officially unveiled for the Christmas masses, but we had a nice Q and A and reception with the artist after the dedication mass on the parish patron feast day. A lovely Christmas trip!
Who's protecting the Innocenti?
Heap big trouble in the land of plenty
Tell me how we're gonna do what's best
Well you guessed, once upon a time in the west

Ah. Thinking of The Quiet Man ..... So, it's a new wife you'll be huntin', then?
No new wife for me, but I will be staying in a little cottage in a VERY small town. Only two pubs, so hardly a town at all.
In the Catholic Church, yesterday was the annual Feast of the Holy Family -- Jesus, Mary and Joseph. No whipping kis in their beds... (Is that a protestant church thing, ann?)
