"One colleague supposedly told Couric that 'with Deborah [Norville], people feel like they need to get dressed before they turn on the TV.'"

"Couric admits that during her time at TODAY she was unwelcoming to other women because she felt like she needed to 'protect my turf.' She writes that she was aware that 'someone younger and cuter was always around the corner' and singles out Banfield as an example. Couric writes: 'For a minute there, Ashleigh Banfield was the next big thing; I'd heard her father was telling anyone who'd listen that she was going to replace me. In that environment, mentorship sometimes felt like self-sabotage.'"

From "Katie Couric rips into former TODAY Show colleagues, admits she froze out female rivals to 'protect her turf,' says her toyboy ex was a 'midlife crisis' and takes potshots at Prince Harry who stank of alcohol in her new memoir" (Daily Mail).

The Epstein bit: "She describes Epstein's $75million New York townhouse as 'Eyes Wide Shut with a twist - creepy chandeliers and body-part art.' Guests ate lasagna out of shallow bowls and Epstein 'held court' in front of the fireplace to the likes of Chelsea Handler and Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn, George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Rose. On the way home [her boyfriend] remarked how young the women were who took their coats.... 'I couldn't imagine what Epstein and Andrew were up to....'" Good of her to share what she knows. Lasagna in shallow bowls... that says a lot.

"Younger and cuter", not "younger and more qualified"? I guess that tells you what women (some, anyway) consider to be "qualifications".

Lasange in shallow bowls. Per AI=

"Yes, it is a good idea to serve lasagna in a shallow bowl, especially a wide one with a broad rim, because it helps contain the sauce and makes it easier to eat without making a mess. Serving in a bowl also helps keep the lasagna hot for longer by reducing the exposed surface area compared to a plate"

Mary Beth ayon kay ...

Shallow bowls, like individual au gratin dishes? If so, it sounds like an excellent way to serve it. Less likely to slide off the plate into someone's lap as it's being served and it pools the sauce around the lasagne to make it easier to mop up with garlic bread.

It was a disastrous move and Couric describes how staffers felt she was an 'existential threat' to their existence. Are there other kinds of existential threats?

Katie Couric is 68 years old. I suspect that there are a lot of female journalists on staff at the various MSM outlets who are "younger" than Ms. Couric. I'll leave the "cuter" judgment alone--it's subjective.

But Ms. Couric lost any chance of garnering my attention (here's that word "garner" again) when I saw a video of her celebrating at her 50th birthday party. She was wearing a very short black leather miniskirt and "twerking" her fanny in some dude's crotch. I don't much care what floats anyone's boat if conducted in private. But the video--distributed in public, persuaded me that Ms. Couric was not to be taken seriously.

Lasagna isn’t supposed to be swimming in sauce. I think the shallow bowl is the wrong way to present it. It’s like admitting you’ve made a mess of it and you think your guests are messy. That’s the wrong message, but I would interpret it to mean that Jeffrey intended to send the wrong message

A bowl, i.e. a pasta bowl, is pretty platelike. It's more a plate with a lip than a bowl-bowl. You can see the layers of lasagna. It's a perfectly fine choice for serving. It does get a little complicated, dish-wise, when in a family setting you're also serving salad - do you serve the salad on a side plate? In another bowl? Do you have enough dishes and room in the dishwasher? (Bowls can be a dishwashing challenge.) You certainly don't want to put the salad in the lasagna bowl.

Maybe six months before selling our house and beginning our merry rounds of short-term rentals while we figure out where and how we want to live next, I replaced my dishes. What I ended up with were, for us, perfect: smaller scale than the giant Pottery Barn ones we'd had for the previous almost twenty years, plain white so they'd look nice with lots of different table decor, the plates possessing a distinct rim for containment while still being flat on the bottom (it is hard to eat a steak in a bowl), the bowls deep and nicely sized for either sitting on a table or being held in a hand while eating ice cream in front of the TV (something we don't really do but my in-laws enjoy). I did have to buy some oversized bowls for the large main-dish salads I like to make. But alas, they're all in storage now.

Jamie ayon kay ...

I should add that our current short-term rental has woefully inadequate dishes. The knives are pretty good, surprisingly.

I still recall her snake-charming, doe-eyed interview with Sarah Palin where she successfully won the day. Oh how I hated her for that interview. But then I watched Savannah Guthrie (I think that the name) pull the same dark, flute-playing/snake-charming interview of Nicholas Sandman from Covington High School where she tried to mesmerize him into apologizing for smiling at the obnoxious Indian guy and I had a new champion.

lasagna(n.)

"dish of cheese and large noodles," as loseyne, losenges, by late-14c. The modern spelling appears in Italian dictionaries by 1590s. From Italian (plural is lasagne), from Vulgar Latin *lasania, from Latin lasanum "a cooking pot," from Greek lasanon "pot with feet, trivet."

I, for one, stopped caring what person replaced what other person behind the desk when Chet Huntley retired, leaving David Brinkley and Walter Cronkite and the tag team of Frank Reynolds and Howard K. Smith, lightweights all in comparison. Chet retired to develop Montana's Big Sky ski resort, one of the most delightfully sensible and productive retirements I can recall . I've seen recordings of the original anchorman, Edward R. Murrow, with his paid-for cigarette smoking away in an ash tray on his desk during the news. As for the big haired and much less competent news anchors (definitely not anchorwomen, as that is somehow a slight to them versus being called a dead weight), Jane Pauley has had no peers, including the gamin Couric, whose historical references should always include having her name used as a measure for the size of a BM on South Park.

mikee ayon kay ...

Oops, I meant Jane Curtin. I must report that my mistake was accidental, but cromulently apt.

mikee ayon kay ...

Did Couric mention the lasagna and the china used? I also note - perhaps apocryphally, but I recall reading it somewhere - that a newbie Time magazine reporter was told to always include what was served for the meals at events such as US / USSR summits, even if they didn't have any new "news" to report a week after everyone else published in daily newspapers or nightly news shows, simply because it gave the report an air of detailed, insider knowledge to the readers. Hmmm. Couric knows that, too. And it means exactly the same thing - she is peddling old news with no new information and trying to make it sound like she knows more than she actually tells. Why didn't she ask the underage girls what the hell they where doing at such a place? Wasn't she a reporter?

Jeff ayon kay ...

I'm sorry I didn't see this yesterday, so forgive the late comment, but I read Couric's memoir, which was unintentionally revealing in so many ways, and none more so than in her Sara Palin anecdote. The beginning of her story really surprised me, because Couric immediately recognized what a special talent Palin was. Then Couric's story became even more surprising, because Couric immediately realized that it was her mission to destroy Palin, and she figured out how to do so. No interest in understanding who Palin was, how she got there, and what her beliefs were; no, it was just destroy Palin, and Couric was extremely proud of herself for having found out how to do so and doing it.
