"The problem with it is, if you make the whole world run by fakes and simulations, everybody becomes increasingly more dysfunctional."

"Everybody becomes alienated and nervous and unsure of their own value, and the whole thing falls apart, and at some point, it’s like civilizational and species collapse."

Said Jaron Lanier, "a top scientist at Microsoft," quoted in Maureen Dowd's new column, "When A.I. Came for Hollywood" (NYT).

Dowd is taking on the Tilly Norwood problem. Do I have to explain that? Why do I have the creepy feeling that Al Gore is going to sidle over and smirk: "What about the Tilly Norwood problem?"

Just kidding. That's Dingell Norwood.

Tilly Norwood is just an all-A.I. actress. People might prefer a completely fake human to a mixed-up, fake-and-real, on-screen human. Why wouldn't we?

Here, watch the new episode of The Tim Dillon Show. Dillon talks about Tilly Norwood:
Tilly Norwood... hasn't even been in anything and is getting shit from these desperate loser bums who are attacking her because supposedly she's taking their jobs. I'm going to come out right now and say that Tilly Norwood has more character than the pieces of shit on Twitter and on Threads ripping her up. Everybody's shitting on her for nothing. This woman did nothing wrong other than be A.I. and be an actress. That's all she did.... I'm a little sick of people diminishing the hopes and dreams of someone just 'cause they happen to not be real in the way that they understand it....
Here's the deal. Tilly Norwood is not going to be a racist. She's not going to say anything about Gaza. She's not gonna be a drug addict. She's not gonna be a liability on set.... She's not gonna have three trans kids like every other actress now.... She's gonna do the damn job. Tilly Norwood's gonna show up and gonna do the job. And I bet when you act with Tilly, you're gonna go, goddammit, she's good. Actors are people, people are out. They're gone. The raping, the drugs, the racism, they got really annoying.....

Everything about the left is fake.

That is why they are so scared of fake people taking their fake jobs.

Al Gore is a completely fake person. Global warming is a completely fake religion.

AI is very threatening to fake things because it is better at being fake than they are.

What’d be really cool is fair use for Tilly and other creations to follow for people to create their own fan-fic clips and movies.

I’m with Tim; we don’t have to listen to ignorant, virtue signaling tripe from Tilly, even if the original creator implies she has some sort of stance. It’s the OC’s opinions, not Tilly’s. We can project (or not) to our hearts’ content and just ignore the noise.

I read this book by Herman Hesse, can’t remember the title, but he talks about a society that recognizes that the “Creative Ages” were behind it, true creativity required belief, faith even, that the modern age viewed as irrational, so modern artists spent all of their time poring over and recreating the stuff from times past, since rationality destroys art.

When everything was CGI in the life-action Snow White movie except the people, and the lead actress did so much to sink the movie, it's natural to ask why we need the people.

In the TV show Stranger Things, the child actors aged out of their roles. By the final season, they weren't plausible.

Besides, Hollywood is tough on child actors. They get all mixed up and exploited. Replace them with AI, and nobody gets hurt.

SPOILER ALERT: "Everything left is fake" is the plot line of Blade Runner: The Director's Cut. Some of the human fakes don't even know they are fake while others try very hard to not be fake.

Everything in the universe that self-perpetuates takes on an evolved and organic character. If AI persists, it'll be incorporated into human culture and biology in a cyborg fashion -- part man, part machine. See Iron Man, Dr. Who's CyberMen, Star Trek's Borg, etc. Watch for cellphones becoming permanent implants.

If AI characters are too fake, simplistic, or sanitized, the content will remain in the cartoonish drama or advertising PR. Many will be led along like sheep or cows with a nose ring, and be happy not thinking. Still, some humans love to rebel from the status quo and some love change for the sake of change.

We are setting ourselves up to fork as a species between the traditional organics and the cyber. The cyber will likely treat the traditional humans as zoo animals...COVID-19 demonstrated that many sci fi plots of the last 50 years are realistic.

I think actors will stick around. People enjoy their backstage dramatics as much as their onstage performances. It's fun to read about their divorces and their stints in rehab.....The people who should be worried are the script writers. AI can surely come up with more plausible plot lines and dialogue than the utter crap they produce.

Jaron Lanier, an early player in virtual reality, is one of the more interesting thinkers in the tech world. He's an odd duck, but he is worth reading. Agree with him or not, I think he is one of the few people with stature in the tech space who grapples earnestly with how technology impacts individuals and society.

Art in LA చెప్పారు...

I used to work on 3D simulations for medical applications, surgery simulations for training. This was bak in the mid-90s. Lanier was giant cheerleader for virtual reality at the time. I didn't hear that he ended up at Microsoft. @narciso, yeah he was way too bullish on VR technology.

For me, augmented-reality is the best application of VR -- think first down stripe in football broadcasts. Full blown VR is claustrophobic to me.

Eventually, movies and programs will be made by a very small handful of people, mostly the people who can write, using only software; and you won't be able to tell the difference from a movie or television program made in Hollywood except it might, perhaps, be much, much better qualitywise.

Lazarus చెప్పారు...

Presumably Tilly is copyrighted and has agents to look after her interests, but a whole series of disposable AI characters could be created to fill any role possible.

Perhaps the bigger development behind this is the merging of movies into the videogaming world. Eventually it may be hard to tell the two apart and we'll have to speak of a new hybrid medium.
+
So is this the end of civilization? Maybe not. What's been threatened or promised for a long time -- people turning off the media and retreating into their own lives -- may yet happen. But was that what made Rome fall? Neglect of the public sphere for the private?

Why such an old fashioned name for such a hypermodern or postmodern creation? The name "Tilly" probably peaked around 1910.

@Josephbleau: You can be sure that this will soon end with ai porn.

See Rule 34 (many web references): "If it exists, there is p0rn of it."

P0rn led technology development since early photography in the 1800s. Then it led with early movies, home movies, VCRs, the early dial-up computer bulletin board systems, advanced computer graphics, the WWW, and then virtual reality. Another tech branch, it led to animated realistic dolls, flashlight-like things, and remote control things.

So, if AI video hasn't started with p0rn I'd be shocked. Consider that Mark Zuckerberg's expensive VR flop Oculus Rift wouldn't show the lower half of human bodies.

buwaya చెప్పారు...

The direct "Golden Age" prophecy for Tilly Norwood is Walter M Millers short story "Darfsteller", concerning robot actors. It was in all the anthologies. Miller was a heavyweight of that age, based mostly on "A Canticle for Leibowitz". Millers problem was he did nor write anywhere near as much as Heinlein and Asimov and the rest. Heinlein or Asimov could not have written "Canticle", Miller was a better writer than either, by quite a ways.
The "Golden Age" stuff gets short shrift these days, in spite of its being, probably, the peak of American literary creativity.

buwaya చెప్పారు...

As a writer I'd put Miller up there with Ray Bradbury, on a good day for Bradbury.

buwaya చెప్పారు...

In a game of "Connections", Walter Miller was just the kind of guy Joseph Heller wrote about in "Catch 22", a USAAC Bomber crewman who aquired severe PTSD from the experience.
