"Lee Anderson, Reform’s chief whip, suggested the return of the 'Invacar' — or invalid carriage — a small single-seater microcar that was distributed by the NHS for decades..."

"... after the Second World War. Anderson told a press conference hosted by the party: 'I remember back in the day if you were on disability and you wanted a car from the state, it was a blue three-wheeler, anybody remember those? What’s wrong with that? Let’s go back to that.' The cars were banned from British roads in 2003 for being too dangerous, after reports of them overturning and catching fire, and ministers ordered that all remaining cars be crushed. Anderson made the comments as he criticised the Motability scheme, which allows disabled people to get cars through the benefits system. Labour ministers are considering removing BMWs, Mercedes and other luxury cars from the scheme, which provides such premium brands to more than 40,000 benefits claimants...."

The benefits system = the scheme where layabouts - a significant percentage being Muslim freeloaders - parasitically live off the productive.

UK jihad preacher Anjem Choudary said in February 2013: “We are on Jihad Seekers Allowance, We take the Jizya (protection money paid to Muslims by non-Muslims) which is ours anyway. The normal situation is to take money from the Kafir (non-Muslim), isn’t it? So this is normal situation. They give us the money. You work, give us the money. Allah Akbar, we take the money. Hopefully there is no one from the DSS (Department of Social Security) listening. Ah, but you see people will say you are not working. But the normal situation is for you to take money from the Kuffar (non-Muslim) So we take Jihad Seeker’s Allowance.”

They should have sent all the dangerous cars to Canada. In parallel with assisted suicide that would have further reduced the cost of health care for the disabled.

From a performance standpoint, three-wheeled vehicles are much more stable when there are two wheels in front. Can-Am makes a number of these, and I've ridden one. They are quite fun.

Today is post anything that will draw attention away from the China trade capitulation day. It's a inconvenient fact that Donald got nothing from all of his bluff and bluster against the Xi Jingaling. We mustn't upset the snowflakes who were so pumped up about the awarding of a gold dunce cap yesterday.

The Democrats in the Senate smell blood in the water, metaphorically, of course.

Something in that article appeared outrageous to me. Is the British government giving cars to disabled people?

A little searching revealed a program called "Motability."
"Taxpayers give £2.8 billion a year to Motability, a scheme that allows disability benefits claimants to exchange their mobility allowance for a new car."

This does indeed seem a bit over the top. No wonder some people want to restrict it. Similar to the 40+ million people on SNAP benefits.

Tracey Ullman featured a three-wheeler in her "You Don't Know" video, but that was apparently a Reliant Regal. I always thought it was an Invacar. Either way, a Trabant would be a step up.

Howard, you've spent the year being smarter than this. Not only did President Trump get soybeans sold again (taking major rhetoric away from the Dems despite soybeans being a commodity), the rare earth crisis has been put off for a year- and all for 10% of tariffs veins reduced. I'm sure the Senate Dems will be in freakout mode, who can blame them. But Winter is Coming, and the end of SNAP will be really bad for a number of minorities.

Oh my gosh! I saw those when I visited London in 1982. They were always parked at the curb, sometimes ON the curb, very easy to get out and didn’t take too much space. It looked as if two stout men could just pick it up.

How politically incorrect. Did they have, perchance, a "Retard-mobile"?

Not Illinois Resident કહ્યું...

There is a north-side Chicago suburb with a high immigrant population concentration for most of its history, where for decades there were two or more Mercedes (or Cadillacs) parked upon each driveway, though median annual household income remained stuck at middle-middle income parameters. Always stuck me as odd, and telling. Expect a fair amount of income tax fraud and cash-based business owners resided there. Suburb was also known for its several gypsy families who plied the usual gypsy trades, and now has a significant Moslem population.

Not Illinois Resident કહ્યું...

We've a fair number of retirees in our little Wisconsin city who rely on mopeds, motor-scooters, and Mercedes midget "A-class" cars to get around town. Where can I place order for new model Invacar? Will it pass emissions control testing? Will I freeze while I drive it in subzero Wisconsin winters?

Tiny cars and tiny houses foreshadow a diminished future.

I wouldn't mind if they brought back the Bath chair, though. No, not those things old people have in their showers, but an early attempt at the wheelchair. They were in "Barry Lyndon," and it looked like they would be fun to race, even if it could only be downhill.

Quadricycle pedal cars are also a fun idea, though they aren't likely to be made street legal either.

Lazarus કહ્યું...

The House of Commons has more members than the US Congress. The major parties have several whips led by the chief whip. If you don't obey the party's orders you can have the whip withdrawn. That means to be essentially read out of the party, though it sounds sort of disgusting in a Robert Mapplethorpe kind of way.

Hassayamper કહ્યું...

As it happens, I took my very first ride in a Waymo self-driving car today, and was very impressed. Every turn, stop, and traffic light was handled perfectly. The speed was always dead on the posted speed limit. Even an unsafe lane change some distance ahead of us prompted an appropriate tap on the brakes and a shift to the next lane over. The technology is fully mature, and I believe it has been proven to have fewer accidents per mile driven than a human driver.

Why cannot a government agency providing rides to disabled people keep a fleet of such vehicles in a few well-placed garages, and send them out whenever they are summoned? Could even outfit self-driving vans with a wheelchair ramp.
