"In northern Arizona my zinnias and cosmos are still flowering. My cannabis is half harvested (2 of 4 plants)..."

"... and it looks like I'll be yielding at least 6 lbs of dried flower. I don't even like the stuff, but decided to grow it for a lark this year. It is legal to grow 6 plants after all. I'm going to end up with vast quantities of the stuff, and it is apparently very strong. All my pot smoking friends and relatives are delighted with my new hobby. It's better than when I was making my own whiskey. That led to too much drinking for me. The funny thing is that this is entirely legal, and the whiskey was not."

Wrote the commenter who calls himself "Old and slow" in last night's sunrise post — the open thread.

I should reformat this post and give it the headline: How to win friends and put people under the influence.

I'm expressing no opinion on what's "entirely legal" in Arizona, but I was motivated to do a little fact check on ChatGPT. I had several questions. You can do your own research. I'll just quote my favorite sentence from the response I got: "The law doesn’t police casual social reciprocity ('hey thanks for dinner, here’s a little bud'), but if there’s a pattern that looks like payment-in-kind, it can cross into illegal distribution."

Reminds me of the fictional Bud Baxter. A retired businessman who did not know much about marijuana, he got a license and opened a pot dispensary in Denver.

I was only expecting a few little shrubs to be honest. The sheer size of the damn things came as a surprise to me and has made me a bit uncomfortable. I cut them down and give them away because I don't want that stuff around after it's out of the ground. I asked Grok about the legality (yeah, not the best source for advice). Grok says it's legal to give it away to friends who are over 21. Now you're making me nervous...

Government did a good job maxing out the stupid with weed. Oh yah sure legal yah…it’s good for you! Makes your kids smarter…but it has to come from our approved, highly regulated, highly taxed sources. Highly. Otherwise you’re a criminal..

I was amused the cannabis is growing along side the zinnias. Heh…

Do the math, ann.
Be skeptical... yes you can.
(Ask Grok if you need help...)

How do you "harvest" six pounds of dried bud from four mature female marijuana plants? Not ounces... pounds.

The police can get away with pulling the plant up by the roots, weighing the root ball, stem, leaves.. the whole living plant. That might weigh in the pounds. But dried "flower" ... the drug part with the stems, leaves and discards gone in the "harvesting" process?

Respectfully professor, your bullshit detector should have gone off here if you know weights and numbers. Your old boys bluff in their late night brag sessions is my bet. I think a lot of them are not who they portray, or doing the things they claim they do.

Not sure if they are trying to impress one another, yer boy meade or what, but ever since you started posting brags of all the "projects" meade gets up to around the house, it seems the commenters have bigger and bigger stories too...

Like 6 pounds of MJ flower harvested from two mature plants. Not likely, miss.

It’s only illegal because the government isn’t getting tax revenue from it. Drugs, like gambling, were a vice until the government got a piece of the action. Then they became virtues.

I'll just say hey man, I brew some great beer down here in Florida and still play live music when possible and maybe we should get together some time.

Or hit me up and I can show you how to prune them so they are more manageable shrub than tall weed. Because they are so tender when young the pruning is super easy too.

what does AZ say about a little neighborly toss over fence?
I am sort of next door in TX

Back in the day we used to grow marijuana between the tomato plants. We felt like we were being naughty and getting away with it. Nowadays, at least in my town, there are pot stores popping up on every corner. No fun at all.

Puff the hallucinating AI, anthropogenic, that is, artificial, too, when reading the scientific and academic literature, while listening to JournoLists braying in a Diverse medley of cacophonious consensus over the Rainbow.

Wait, you guys toss your neighbors over a fence? Seems kind of agressive.

And then there’s the question of which barricade you are tossing them over.

That's more than a couple of "keys" as we used to say back in the day. A man could make a lot of friends in Los Angeles with those.

Back in the 70s my brother brewed beer, and heard that it was illegal. So he called the police and asked if it was legal. They said "No, but we will never catch you."

When I was baking my own bread it led to weight gain, it was so good I ate too much of it. The store bought bread doesn't lead to weight gain because I don't buy it and don't consume it.

Geeze Derve, you're not too smart are you? The dried flower number is an estimate of total dried weight. I'm not drying it, I'm giving it away wet so it's out of my hands. 6 pounds from 4 plants is a lot, but not a crazy amount. Do you have any notion of how big these plants can get in the AZ sunshine? I'll be delighted to have the last two finished and gone, but I haven't the heart to just kill them early. Wet and without the rootball they probably weigh 10 pounds each easy. I'm wishing I'd never planted them at this point.

One of the escapades my older brother (cbhn) and his dumbass friends got up to was growing pot in Marshall County Missippi. This would have been about 1970--I'm pretty sure I was still in high school.

Anyway, the three of them got busted, and the sheriff reported some amazing amount of pounds--which turned out to be the result of weighing the mature plants wet, rootball and all.

Between that and the way the authorities reduced the charges as the bribes started working, I started questioning the system.
