I've spent a lot of time in the Netherlands over the last 35 or 40 years, in part because the world's #1 ag school is in Wageningen, so there are a lot of professional connections, but friendships as well. My Dutch is decent enough that in shops or on the streets people don't automatically switch to English. Amongst friends we often speak a lot of Dutch, because they know I like it when they correct me.

It’s the same with all populists. They have no interest in actually governing. Indeed the difficulty of actually governing is why they are there in the first place.
Realizing that they are not fit for the task and that the business of government isn’t as easy as right-wing propaganda had had them believe they invent some populist reason to eject themselves and it’s always everyone else’s fault.
Whether you agree with Wilders anti-immigration standpoint or not, he pulled out of the government because he simply could not make good on his promises. For almost a year the government did not solve any of the issues they were elected on. His own minister of immigration, Faber, failed to make any real progress. It simply was lack of competence, realism and ability to cooperate. They pretended they could fix immigration but found out they couldn't, as everybody who looked at the situation realistically knew from the start.
So now Wilders will retreat to his previous approach, sniping from the sidelines, pouring fuel on the fire of discontent and contributing nothing to real solutions. Good riddance I say. I hope not too many voters will fall again for his empty rhetoric.

Wilders' present is Farage's future. Populism does not survive contact with the real world -- as soon as they are required to take some accountability and make hard decisions that may not be popular -- they run for cover.

Wilders problem was that he did not have a majority in parliament to support his immigration program. The normal parliamentary approach to such a problem, assuming there is popular support for the program, is to try force another election.
The Spanish case is the result of another typical parliamentary fix - Spain has preferential treatment for the people of the former Spanish empire, who are culturally and linguistically compatible (with very few Muslims, nb). Hence they have had much less in the way of Islamic problems. This is because the left wing doesnt have (and has never had) a majority, they can only govern with the aid of otherwise right wing Catalan and Basque parties, which are "populists" themselves.

Geert Wilders had his moment: a historic chance to deliver a right-wing, conservative government in the Netherlands. And he walked away.
Not because the numbers didn’t add up, but because governing means responsibility. It means compromise, strategy, showing up. That’s where populists falter. They campaign to provoke, not to lead.
Wilders didn’t want to govern. He wanted the theatre, not the burden. The real tragedy is that he got what he wanted, and the country is left with the political mess
