Ezra Klein and virtually everything.

I'm just trying to get through this New Yorker interview with Ezra Klein, "Ezra Klein Argues for Big-Tent Politics":
I agree with Ta-Nehisi [Coates] on virtually every view he has on things that Charlie Kirk had said. ... I have poured virtually every ounce of myself into preventing everything that Kirk poured himself into creating. For more people than I had understood, the sense that we are in any way in community together—the sense that we are still in a place where we are all practicing and doing politics—has already eroded. Something that’s very alive for me is a feeling that we are not that far from national rupture. So many things that we like to say “can’t happen here” have already been happening here.

[And who do you blame for that?]

I mean, I blame Donald Trump quite specifically for that. I think that the way he has acted in the aftermath of Kirk’s murder has been an exhibition of virtually everything that is wrong....

Klein had said something gracious about Kirk. Coates attacked him. And Klein adopted this strange way of talking about himself. It's so effusive yet vague. Instead of saying "I think we are close to a national rupture," he says "Something that’s very alive for me is a feeling that we are not that far from national rupture." He sounds like a comic character in a play.

Maybe you've seen the recent podcast with Klein and Coates going head to head. I don't know if you can bear to listen to that, but I highly recommend this commentary on it from AntifascistDad, who focuses of Klein's Buddhist turn:

I gather that Klein eventually tried to make the same point to Coates - but now, rather than break with a Great Antiracist, apparently he's decided he agrees with the grifter on "virtually everything."

Since the 20th century, "Fascist" has largely meant "any team or party, especially a popular and effective one, opposed to the international Communist movement." Some applied the term specifically to Mussolini, as he liked fasces symbolism.

"Fasces" actually means a bundle of sticks with an axe sticking out, or a united group with a ruler and the authority to enforce its own laws. That is a universal need, even among Communists.

Fasces symbols have been common in European history from before Rome to the present. They remain common in US symbols and are even on the back of US dime. One hates fasces if one hates all of European history, which may indeed be true of some people today.

Yes, black males commit crimes way way way out of proportion with anyone else in the US (and this pattern applies globally). Pick your explanation, but US government data is usually presented to obscure the meaning of crime data. They report total murders by white versus black offenders, but don't present it as percentages of the population. They don't report black-on-white versus white-on-black crime number clearly either, at they too makes blacks look (stereotypically) violent and dangerous to be around.

Oh, the profound ironies of the Rodney King and George Floyd cases...single cases led to the deaths of many more blacks than needed to die. But, that's how the world works these days.

And just using the word because everyone on Left is using it.

I read Tennesee Coat's article and its his usual crap. Anyone who disagrees with Tennessee Coats is a racist or hates black people and they deserve to get cancelled, destroyed, or silenced. He's also a complete mediocrity who wouldn't be given any space in the Altantic or MSM if he wasn't black.

He's the best example we have of "Black Privilege". He claimed Kirk called for a "US President to be executed". What kirk said in a throw-away line in a discussion about Harris in 2023, was that Biden should be thrown in jail and/or executed for crimes against America. In other words, Treason.

And that's it. IOW, deliberate unserious hyperbole. Not a "call for a President to be executed".

"AntifascistDad is really good, so don't let the "antifascist" scare you... which, why should it? You're all antifascist."

“The phrase, "don't let the 'antifascist' scare you... which, why should it? You're all antifascist," plays on the dual meaning and public perception of the term "antifascist". The author is contrasting the literal meaning of being against fascism with the connotations associated with the label "Antifa" or "antifascist" as used in contemporary political discourse.

Here is a breakdown of the meaning:
The literal, broad meaning
In its most basic sense, antifascist means "opposed to fascism." Fascism is a political ideology characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society. The statement suggests that most people would naturally oppose this ideology.

The politically charged label "Antifa"
In recent years, "Antifa" has become a politically charged term, often used by right-wing commentators as a catch-all label for any left-leaning or liberal protest actions. The Antifa movement is a loose network of activists who use a range of tactics, from non-violent protests and organizing to confrontational and, at times, violent actions.

The contrast in the quote
The quote uses this contrast to make a point:
"don't let the 'antifascist' scare you": This acknowledges that many people have been conditioned to fear the term "antifascist," seeing it through the lens of media narratives about the Antifa movement and its most militant elements.
"why should it? You're all antifascist": This part appeals to the universal, literal definition of being against fascism. It attempts to reframe the conversation by asking why anyone would be intimidated by a label that, at its root, simply means opposing a tyrannical and oppressive ideology.

In short, the statement is a rhetorical tactic meant to disarm the fear associated with the political label and to align the speaker's position with a more widely accepted principle.”

Please use the comments forum to respond to the post. Don't fight with each other. Be substantive... or interesting... or funny. Comments should go up immediately... unless you're commenting on a post older than 2 days. Then you have to wait for us to moderate you through. It's also possible to get shunted into spam by the machine. We try to keep an eye on that and release the miscaught good stuff. We do delete some comments, but not for viewpoint... for bad faith.
