Cranes celebrate the arrival of October.

I suppose there is sexual "dimorphism" in their voices -- the male's trilling answered by the female's sharp semiquavers.

We live in Corpus Christi, Tx and always look forward to their arrival.

Cool! Free crane show.

I think we should name them Niles and Daphne.

As long as the cranes done come with pile drivers. I always hate the boom-boom-boom of pile drivers. Ooops, wrong kind of cranes.

They do seem quite happy...today there are storks in our live oak, enjoying the sun...they also seem quite content...

Lovely creatures, but their voice reminds me of RFK Jr., not that it’s his fault. I watch a couple from Alaska who recently shot a crane to eat, I guess it’s legal there and supposed to be good eating.

The huge Blue Herons that live cheek by jowl with my semi tame upland wood fowls are down on my dock as I type. Fowl chicks are a favorite snack for the herons. They gobble them down whole. Yum.

I will never understand the fascination with the sandhill crane migration in Nebraska. The two who hang around our farm every spring/summer are loud enough. I can't imagine wanting to listen to a million of them.

Inag's sad dream/fantasies of wanting to kill and eat RFK jr.

Inag - Re-read your own post at 1:00 - we all know how to read between your lines.

Nice! I wish sandhill's weren't attracted to roadways. They're monogamous, so there's nothing sadder than seeing a lone sandhill remain at its mate's side after being struck by a vehicle.

Lots of rabbits out now, in Texas. Here's a trick: When you see a rabbit out in the open, in still position, very much in sight, and they don't move, or just shift position a little - even as you approach with dogs - there's a reason. The reason is, they're trying to attract your attention and draw you closer, trying to spur on a chase into the brush. They have a clutch of young nearby that they're protecting.

Saw 3 rabbits on our woods walk this morning, all posing. One dog (keen nose) found the nest nearby the trail, and I had to pull her away from the kits. It's Wabbit Season ! No, it's Duck Season !

It's the ryegrass. Rye drops its seed this time of year attracting all sorts of granivores.

Our first taste of Autumn here in Center Mass started last night about 9pm with a brisk breeze. Frost is predicted overnight tonight.

Always happy to look out and see Sandhills in my back yard. So much better than Canadian geese.

Are cranes typically associated with October? My Kawase Hasui calendar has a painting with cranes for the month of October.

name them Niles and Daphne

I second the motion.

Quayle કહ્યું...

they’ve got their winter gray on, not their summer red.

Reminds me of Dylan Thomas’ Poem in October, except with herons instead of cranes

It was my thirtieth year to heaven
Woke to my hearing from harbour and neighbour wood
And the mussel pooled and the heron
Priested shore
The morning beckon
With water praying and call of seagull and rook
And the knock of sailing boats on the net webbed wall
Myself to set foot
That second
In the still sleeping town and set forth.

I do love these little video snippets, thank you for sharing.

The most beautiful month in Arizona also, but only because it means the end of the fookin summer.

Somewhere between September and October, measured in days, is the most perfect moment to be alive. It is easy to miss it if you are not careful.

Josephbleau કહ્યું...

In Chicago it has not arrived yet.
