... but it was Comey who, last May, Instagrammed a photo — with shells in the sand in the form of "8647" — and the cavalier caption "Cool shell formation on my beach walk."
At the time, Trump said: "He knew exactly what that meant. A child knows what that meant. If you're the FBI director and you don't know what that meant, that meant assassination."

I like the idea of somber professionalism around criminal law, starting with not wielding its power for political purposes then making snot nosed memes. But that is who they are, so what’s a somber professional to do?
…also we used to allow our politicians to engage in politics. Trump should be no exception but he’s good at it so his opponents invent morals and standards to try and get him to stop. Ignore them…
I suppose we'll find out in short order whether or not Comey's indictment has legs, or if it was just a warning shot.
Trump is a prankster in memes.
The Left started it. Time for Trump to finish it.
What I really dislike about this are the comments that criminal prosecutions against Dems can’t be filed in DC or even VA because a jury pool won’t convict because of TDS. That creates an area in America where people can commit crimes without consequences. We can’t have two Americas.
Yes Dave. It will likely be ended sooner but if it goes to a jury he OJ walks.
The same crowd that cheered years of relentless politically motivated lawfare against Trump and his allies suddenly announces that lawfare is a threat to “Democracy.” Comey might skate but Trump will have made his point.
"What I really dislike about this are the comments that criminal prosecutions against Dems can’t be filed in DC or even VA because a jury pool won’t convict because of TDS"
Michael Sussman's trial, (Hillary's Lawyer) was particularly egregious. There was an absolutely damning e-mail if I recall correctly, and after his acquittal the jury foreperson gave a statement to the press saying something to the effect of "there are so many other cases they should have been focusing on instead." Also I think one of the jury members children was on the same Lacrosse team as Michael Sussman's child. Absolute Deep State perfidy.
In the grand scheme Comey's leaks warrant more serious charges than these stopgap "lying to Congress" charges. This indictment also hinges on the facts regarding the leaks so I expect a lot more to come. There also was earlier reports of multiple grand juries in multiple jurisdictions.
“but it was Comey who, last May, Instagrammed a photo — with shells in the sand in the form of ‘8647’”
Which Comey said he found while walking on the beach.
So Trump is leaving this for Comey to find.
It’s good to see Elon back with us.
Red meat for his base, but soon to be shown to be a nothingburger.
Didn't Trump appoint one of his personal lawyers to run this jurisdiction? I am sure with all that experience prosecuting crimes will pay off here lol.
A private citizen makes a funny joke but we have to condemn Trump because it is about Trump…
So far all the back and forth revolves around the corrupt judiciary. No mention of Comey because both sides know he’s guilty as hell…
Ohh nooo
Someone help fallen senior citizen!!!
I've been familiar with the phrase "86" my entire life and not once did anyone claim it means "kill" until after Comey posted that photo.
Still, Comey's indictment is poetic justice and there's nothing wrong with Musk (or anybody else) laughing about it.
Remember folks ... the James Comey indictment originated when Democrat Anthony Weiner (who I would argue that Ann Althouse helped take down) sent a dick pick to an underage girl.
Without that, Hillary Clinton would have been President.
Mark said...Red meat for his base, but soon to be shown to be a nothingburger.
You don't get to decide that. Did you think you do?
Didn't Trump appoint one of his personal lawyers to run this jurisdiction?
I don't know and I don't care. Is there some reason why I should care? Is there some reason to think Trump's lawyers aren't fit for the job?
Let's not forget Comey's book: "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership". The truth is he lied in a leadership position, because his loyalty was to himself.
Well, let's all just all hope/pretend the federal DC courts will be somberly professional. Better yet, competent and unbiased. I'm joking, of course. Why is the competence of the judiciary never discussed?
As pointed out above, Musk (who actually posted this) is not involved in the "somber profession of wielding criminal law."
"Without that, Hillary Clinton would have been President."
Without what? Anthony Weiner's weiner? Are you saying the "basket of deplorables" had little or no impact?
Video : FAFO Graph
Hang ’im high.
At 6-5, Comey not only came to believe that he was
'above the law,' but also that the 'higher loyalty' was to himself.
But in DC, Democrats are above the law, an it will not be possible to change it until the whole system collapses.
What was professional about the NY state prosecution of Trump?
Hilarious.
And then there's this: FBI well represented in J6 crowd.
oh, and one more- all the somber professionalism stuff deserves a civility bullshit tag. Maybe when they get back from their walk…/sarc off
This seems like a one-off misstatement by Comey who is, like the entire FBI, beyond reproach.
How about NO!
"Somber professionalism".... Awww, did someone do something in slightly poor taste? Boo fucking hoo.

I’ve always heard “86” used in the context of to dispose of something. When using 86 about a person, killing isn’t an unreasonable assumption.
I suspect the rest of the cabal who geared up to bag Trump are sweating a bit. Maybe a lot. Let’s begin with 51 intelligence officials who sign the now famous laptop letter.
Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn needs justice for what the FIB (sic) did to him and his family.
"Without that, Hillary Clinton would have been President."
I thought her hidden emails were uncovered during the Benghazi investigation…
Roger Stone dropped some interesting information about Erik Siebert, the former U.S. Attorney who didn’t want to go after Letitia James. Siebert also fought hard to keep the Justice Department from indicting former FBI Director James Comey.
According to Stone, Siebert prepared a 51-page memo arguing in Comey’s favor. What he didn’t include in the memo is that Siebert’s father-in-law also happens to be the godfather of Comey’s daughter.
Firing all the people who believe in the rule of law will at least make it easier to purge the Trump partisans when this house of cards collapses.
Yah we all went round and round with 86. Me and my mates waiting tables ‘86 crab cakes’ never meant to dispose of, it was a verb, a command to stop selling it to your tables, take them off the menu…kill them? seems closer than dispose of…
Hillary lost in 2016 because of her "learn to code" attitude toward the Rust Belt and working class whites. This fractured the Democrats and pushed many to the Pat Buchanan faction of the Republicans (as later adopted by Trump).
Hillary's creepy Cheshire Cat grins during the debates sealed her loss.
…we would jokingly stretch the meaning if someone was absent for the day - ‘86 Loretta’ and all. I’m sure someone somewhere in an Italian eatery someone must have used ‘86 Tony’ after a mob hit…
The pansy Comey says his heart is “broken for the DOJ”.
That stove is hot. You shouldn't have touched it.
Time for a reinforcement of that lesson. Observe and learn.
"Rule of law" is kind of like the "Rules based order," it's meaning changes depending on who is in power. Pawing through Trump's wife's underwear drawer by the FBI over a violation that Joe Biden was actually guilty of? "Rule of law," prosecution for lying to Congress? Abuse of power.
Kak lives in a simple world. But, like I said, I think his goal here is to inject disinformation into the national conversation, picked up by AI, and he doesn't care how stupid it sounds.
Hillary lost because she was a terrible politician and terrible person who acted entitled to the role. No retail sales skills to voters. Insulting she was…
Without Comey, Trump never would have been president. By attempting to prosecute him, Trump will make everyone forget that.
A reminder - we're (checks calendar) eight months in.
It's still early.
@Kaki: Without Comey, Trump wouldn't have had to deal with Deep State propaganda and the illegal vast left-wing conspiracy. He'd have won more convincingly.
…to his opponents it’s been eight months and he’s still there. WHY HASN’T SOMEONE DONE SOMETHING!??!!
" I think his goal here is to inject disinformation into the national conversation, picked up by AI, and he doesn't care how stupid it sounds."
There doesn't seem to be any other explanation for continuing after being so often and dramatically wrong about just about everything, and still not slipping away in shame. It's Morning Joe level wrong, but even Scarborough has an occasional moment of clarity.
Larry J said...When using 86 about a person, killing isn’t an unreasonable assumption.
rehajm said...Me and my mates waiting tables ‘86 crab cakes’ never meant to dispose of []…kill them? seems closer than dispose of…
No need to speculate. There is a long history of using "86" about a person. It means "throw the bum out."
Remember when it was actually Ukraine that interfered with our election, and then suddenly, maybe to cover that up, Ukraine's arch enemy became our national bogyman?
Secret Ledger in Ukraine Lists Cash for Donald Trump’s Campaign Chief - NYT
All lies 'leaked' to the NYT by politicians who had previously met with Biden in his VP offices in the WH, along with "the Whistleblower" where Biden demanded help in the election. It got Trump's campaign manager fired, but it was an own goal, because the new campaign manager was much better.
Steve McIntyre did some amazing analysis of those visitor logs, which is probably why Biden spent a quarter of his time in the WH in Rehobeth, where no visitor logs seem to be forthcoming.
"86" is shorthand for abort, sequester the "burden" of evidence.
Trump's sea side mosaic is better constructed than Comey's.
In late 1985 and early 1986, at least some Toyota dealers ran an "86 the 85s" ad campaign. A loudmouth manager pushed his sales team to get rid of the model year 1985 cars. They were to sell them, not burn them or crush them.
The Comey 8647 story was overblown, even though Comey is a snake in human form.
I heard that Trump is building secret concentration camps with shower ovens.
Is that true?
I don't know.
That bastard!
Let’s not bicker and argue about who 86’d who…
To paraphrase Shakespeare...
Will no one 86 this "burden"? h/t Obama

That's what Hillary said without evidence.
It's a nice distraction from the actual work that hasn't transpired: ending the Russian Ukraine war, releasing the Epstein files, cutting down the administrative state, inspecting the gold in Ft Knox, etc.
Somber professionalism bullshit.
I also don't really associate "86" with killing, but that's somewhat beside the point for me. Comey was helping to normalize that idea that the country needs to get rid of Trump right now, i.e., not allow him to remain in office until the end of his term. That could mean assassination or something non-violent (impeachment, etc.), but either way it's very serious and absolutely anti-democratic.
“Somber professionalism about the wielding of criminal law?” To the extent that concept was still being followed it died when the left weaponized the criminal law to go after Trump and his allies. FDR tried to use the criminal law to go after former Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon. FDR failed.
Republicans use the law against Democrats when they think they've done something that's illegal. Democrats use the law against Republicans when they fear they might do something that's successful.
I agree with Dogma. And nobody is proposing to kill Comey. But given the multiple assassination attempts against Trump, he can be forgiven for being a little sensitive.
Also Trump didn't post this.
Some kind of reform is needed so that charges arising out of service in or about the federal government, even if they take place in Washington, are tried somewhere else in the country, or that the juries are pulled from other parts of the country.
Comey was just a bought and paid for Clinton lackey. His employment record confirms that. Holder is who I'd like to see taken down, but until Hillary is behind bars Justice remains unserved.
Lawyers are $1000+ an hour in DC.. Comey is gonna go broke.. just as the Democrats tried to break Trump... bummer. He lied and unfortunately the Democrats lost the election.. so no Kamala or Biden to cover... I shed no tears.
Back in the 80's I was in a bar in Ashland, MT. Ashland is a small town in Rosebud County just across the Tongue River from the Northern Cheyenne Reservation which is a dry res. Tribal members who want to go to a bar can go east to Ashland or west across the line to the Jimtown bar. There's no Jimtown, it's just a bar. It does boast the world's largest pile of beer cans out back, however.
Anyway, I can't recall now if it was in the Ashland Bar or the Club Buffet, but they had a list written in black marker on white posterboard prominently displayed behind the bar. At the top it said, "86'ed from the Bar". Under that was a list of 8 or 10 names. These individuals were more or less permanently banned from the bar. I say more or less because several names had lines drawn through them. Presumably they had charmed their way back into the good graces of the owner or the staff or had paid for damages or whatever. I remember there were at least three members of the Pretty Weasel family who were no longer welcome patrons of that establishment.
While I was there a number of fights broke out, but didn't amount to much. They were quickly broken up and the fighters told to go outside until they cooled off. I had the impression it was just business as usual. I don't know what it took to get your name on the big list.
@Jaq, more misinformation from you! Comey is 6’ 8”.
No mention of Comey because both sides know he’s guilty as hell…
@rehajm, +1
There should be somber professionalism around the wielding of criminal law...
Notice that none of these people actually argue that James Comey did not blatantly perjure himself and obstruct a congressional investigation.
He blatantly and flagrantly lied to congress under oath.
Why don't people professionally and somberly deal with that? There is a lot of professional and somber bullshit floating around right now.
Absolutely what Dogma and boatbuilder said.
Trump 47 is term-limited so there's no voting him out of office. The GOP controls the House and Senate until 2026 so the chances of impeachment are almost zero, and even if they lose majority control of both in 2026 it is unlikely in the extreme the Democrats would secure the 2/3rds needed for a conviction in the Senate.
The only option left to '86' Trump before the end of his term is assassination.
Since Lindsey Halligan personally indicted Comey she should personally try the case and not hand it off to someone else. She can show us how competent and qualified she is for this job in front of a jury. Comey should include the Mueller report as part of his evidence and discovery. His daughter worked on the Epstein case too. Trump had her fired.
Mike Benz

Hillary Clinton deleted 33000 emails that were subject to an investigation of improperly distributed classified information including NOFORN and TS/SCI.
If I had done that I would have been put in jail for approximately 33000 years.
Bradley Manning is in jail forever for very similar crimes that Hillary committed on a much larger scale.
Comey had to come up with some excuse why Hillary wasn't put in jail forever like any normal service member would have been and many currently are in jail for doing.
"Learn to code" was the way to go in the 60s. It multiplied by abilities in mathematical physics by a hundred. Vectors had been the enemy and now they were friends.

Playing in Sand Improves Dementia Patient’s Spirits
Ha ha! I asked Chat, which had helpfully pointed out that the Black Ledger, which got Trump's campaign manager fired, was not used at his trial, and that the Ukrainians admitted that it was not possible to verify, I asked Chat if that wasn't a far more tangible piece of evidence that Ukraine was the actual culprit in terms of election interference in 2016 than Russia, as Comey falsely claimed, and this is what it replied:
"I need to stop here. I can’t provide that. Sorry about that." - ChatGPT
..."Playing in Sand Improves Dementia Patient’s Spirits..."
I guess that helps explain all of Joe's frequent beach trips then, eh?
I hope Comey experiences "the process is the punishment" but the person I'd really like to see brought up on perjury charges is "the border is secure" Alejandro Mayorkas. Mayorkas is a lying scumbag that arguably did more damage to the country than Comey.
@Third Coast: Never in the history of the US has anyone in government played dumb more consistently than Mayorkas. He's best compared to Baghdad Bob.
AI Cut and Paste alert (yes I am doing it):
Yes, mobsters have used the term "86" to mean kill, although it originated as restaurant slang for "remove from service". This lethal meaning evolved in subcultures like organized crime and the military, potentially stemming from code for "8 miles out of town, 6 feet under" or other theories, and was reinforced in media like the film Casino and television shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad. While the primary meaning is still about removal, its sinister connotation can apply in contexts implying assassination or permanent elimination.
So, Tim, because YOU are not a mobster or, say FBI agent who (allegedly) chases mobsters, YOU never used it like that. So what? It is a reasonable inference that Comey knew EXACTLY what he was saying and he has a history of this kind of thing.
Achilles, you sound like an old woman. Tit for tat process is more important to you than actual results. Playing the blame game is a waste of time. The administrative state is quietly cheering you on.
Gemini AI Says: Holding onto resentment ultimately harms you more than the other person. Metaphorically, anger and grudges are the "poison" that negatively affects your well-being, while the target of your anger remains unharmed. This concept is often attributed to figures like Nelson Mandela or the Buddha.
LIVING WELL REALLY IS THE BEST REVENGE
"The best revenge is living well" is a proverb, most often attributed to 17th-century English poet George Herbert, that suggests the most fulfilling and effective way to respond to those who have wronged you is by focusing on your own happiness and success, rather than seeking retaliation. This approach involves letting go of bitterness and anger, reclaiming your power, and investing in your own well-being and growth to demonstrate strength, resilience, and self-empowerment.
Grow the fuck up, my old son.
It's only acceptable - to wield criminal law - when a lefty is attacking a non-lefty.
86 is democratic terrorist talk.
Three pertinent questions here:
1. Did he in fact commit the crimes being asserted?
2. Have other people who committed such crimes previously been charged and ultimately sentenced?
3. If the answer is "Yes" to both of these questions, what really is your problem?
What does Game Theory say about "tit for tat"?
"In the real world (politics, business, biology), stable cooperation often depends on reciprocal strategies of this[tit for tat] kind."
It's like "Now now, put down the gun, and let me keep mine pointed at you."
Biden opened Pandora's box, and it's going to be a real job closing it again, but unilateral disarmament is not the path to that end.
Remember that Trump is facing trial in NYC as soon as he is out of office for claiming that Mar a Lago was worth more than many private homes on much smaller lots have sold for in Palm Beach.
Tim: Politics by prosecutions has backfired on the Democrats losing them the presidency and congress. Now, you think it's a good strategy to emulate? Appealing to your inferiority complex only serves to keep Trump's extreme MAGA base agitated. Normies are turned off.
I don't like Trump I can't stand him personally. However I would like to see him succeed. This and as war on Free Speech isn't helping.

…conditions will not improve until we agree to abide by a set of rules acceptable to both sides. Your side doesn’t have to like them. King George didn’t like them either but…
@Jaq:
The shadowy operatives pulling sleepy Biden's strings opened Pandora's Box. The oligarchs put their foot down on these games by appearing on stage during the Trump 47 inauguration.
We are all pawns in the global war of the finance and tech oligarchs. They took control of wealth (i.e., computerized stock trading and banking), and what everything everyone does 24/7 (i.e., phones, PCs and social media).
The politicians are now surrogates who use the voting system as symbolic authority, but then they turn around and feed their true masters. Trump broke the 4th wall in 2016, and then the world changed.
The Mueller report found plenty of evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian intelligence, going back to November 2015 and continuing throughout 2016. However, Mueller concluded that the evidence was not strong enough to bring a successful criminal prosecution for espionage, conspiracy or violation of campaign-finance laws.
From the report: "Second, while the investigation identified numerous links between individuals with ties to the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump Campaign, the evidence was not sufficient to support criminal charges. Among other things, the evidence was not sufficient to charge any Campaign official as an unregistered agent of the Russian government or other Russian principal. And our evidence about the June 9, 2016 meeting and WikiLeaks’s releases of hacked materials was not sufficient to charge a criminal campaign-finance violation. Further, the evidence was not sufficient to charge that any member of the Trump Campaign conspired with representatives of the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 election."
Now, you think it's a good strategy to emulate?
If you’re trying to suggest there’s going to be a party flip because people guilty of real crimes are being somberly, professionally prosecuted, I’m happy to take the other side if that proposition…

Kak - The Mueller report was a hearsay BS doc. They manufactured it all - then walked to the edge. Could never prove anything - admitted they could not prove it - but basically said "We still think so anyway" - because it was all BS.
But it the thin evidence, which would not stand up in court, did come in handy to smear Trump.
That's a fair point, Howard.

You are conflating 2 completely different situations.
Democrats made up crimes to charge Trump with. People noted the inherent unfairness.
Democrats also blatantly committed crimes and are not being charged.
Also both parties in DC have been blatantly corrupt and have been war profiteering for decades.
You didn't know anyone killed in the wars these people started. I do. Hillary Clinton and thousands of other people in DC and the Pentagon cannot go to jail long enough to make up for what they did.

The calculation for prosecuting spies is:
(1) crush the small and weak offenders to maintain control of information as an asset -- see Edward Snowden
(2) monitor and manage those with too much knowledge -- see Robert Hanssen
(3) let the big fish run the show and ignore "laws" -- see J. Edgar Hoover.
Hinderaker also thinks the Marquis of Queensbury rules are still in place.
I can't disagree with your conclusions, Achilles. Therefore Maybe someone needs to establish a commission on the war on terror and the billions and billions of dollars made by the military industrial complex including vice President Dick Cheney's role as commander in Chief pulling the puppet strings of George w bush and supplying lucrative contracts to his company, halliburton.

Come on, admit it, Kak! At the beginning of this year you would never have expected this “house of cards” to (nor admitted that it could) chug merrily onward for 8 months (2/3 year!) after Trump's inauguration. But, of course, that initial grand failure on your part doesn't make you introspective at all about things.

Enigma: "We are all pawns in the global war of the finance and tech oligarchs"
Mmm, I agree we polloi are pawns. But the oligarchs are at best knights or bishops. The big nation-states are still the biggest gangs, and the tech companies do what they must in the environment the nation-states create. Oligarchs who really ran things wouldn't have had to flip 180 degrees in late 2024. CC, JSM
Mosby: you are naive. The oligarchs who control our money supply and the oligarchs who know all of the secrets of everybody on the planet control the nation states through their millionaire puppets who are amazingly adept at picking stocks
Howard: "the oligarchs who know all of the secrets of everybody on the planet control the nation states"
Eh, I am not so naive. The ChiComs and Russians lock up or kill their oligarchs when they get out of line. The Europeans just use their court systems to extract money and compliance from the tech companies. Over here, we jawbone them, leverage contracts, and as a last resort use the court system. The state still has coercive measures that the companies can't match.
Now can the oligarchs maneuver and bargain within this framework? Sure. Much better than you and I can. And they have the advantage of inhabiting multiple countries at once, so they can be slippery prey. But they are far, far from being the Stonecutters. CC, JSM
@John Mosby:
The pyramid king Bernie Madoff and billionaire Michael Bloomberg were key figures in early electronic stock trading. That's one reason by Madoff's cam lasted so long: respect for his status. Bloomberg terminals were essential for active traders for decades, and gave Mikey boy billion after billion after billion. All the high speed trade operators front-run the market with fiber optic networks next to the exchanges, and thereby skim a bit from every trade. Their surrogates include Pelosi's genius husband and Charles Schumer.
Dark money donors ran the 2020 election. Bloomberg redirected his resources after flaming out as a candidate.

I agree with that more than I disagree. A lot of that money wasn't even dark, per the TIME article.
However, I do disagree with it a bit. Was Biden really the best they could do with their billions? Is the current fragmented status of the Democrat party written into the oligarch plan? Why hasn't anyone paid off AOC, Crockett, the trans mafia, etc, to shut up and go away? And across the aisle, how is MAGA surviving and thriving? Similar in Europe for the nationalist movements. And in the imperial East, did Jack Ma just agree to take one for the oligarch team, for appearance's sake?
Don't get me wrong, the tech titans have a lot of power. But they are pit bulls that the political titans use their much greater power to capture and direct to their purposes. CC, JSM
Misrepresenting testimony and evidence to a grand jury to secure an indictment is a lot easier to do in that setting since there is no defense lawyer present to challenge it, but it is a pretty perilous road for Halligan to go down right after her predecessor resigned.
The indictment appears to attribute to Comey words he never uttered.
In answering Sen. Cruz, Comey said he stood by his 2017 testimony. He did not say in the 2020 hearing that he had not “authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports.”
If I remember correctly — those were Cruz’s words, which he said after Comey testified that he stood by his 2017 testimony. This is a pretty egregious abuse of the grand jury process and I'm wondering how they did it.
This case is likely to go badly for Halligan and everyone was thinking Habba was a bad at lawyering.
Point taken. Let's not forget the role of Mossad and Bibi, Achilles
“Bradley Manning is in jail forever for very similar crimes that Hillary committed on a much larger scale.”
WAS in prison. Until President Barack H. Obama commuted her sentence in 2017.
Comey strikes me as someone who always thinks he is the smartest person in any room he is in. This particular question about Comey's veracity or lack there of has been around for years. I read a variety of blogs from lawyers and the general viewpoint I see is that he probably did it but it isn't that big of a deal. What I think is interesting is what it isn't. Not law was passed for the sole purpose of changing the statute of limitations so that an indictment could be issued. The two indictments weren't manipulated so that 2 misdemeanors could be changed into 34 felonies. Persons identified as victims aren't saying they weren't victimized and would gladly do it again.
