There were no counter-vigil people. It wasn't a protest. There were no signs and no rabble rousing. The vigil participants were mostly singing and there were a few speakers, who were hard for me to hear, but they seemed to mostly be speaking in a religious mode, with references to freedom of speech.

I am happy the event happened and that you and Meade were there. I wish 100 times more people showed up. I am about to watch the wife (Erika) speak for the first time.

This is fundamentally incompatible with liberty and the law has been systematically altered in efforts to achieve equality of outcomes.
Unsatisfied with the results, the neo-Puritan progressives continue to push ahead with the quest. The transformation of the left with regard to freedom of speech in my lifetime is as dazzling to me as the mainstreaming of homosexuality and attendant demonization of normal men. And as the left, through the Democrat Party, came to control more and more of the institutions of this country, they have worked unceasingly to corrupt and control the use of the English language in speech.

As a newspaper reporter for 30 years (prior to my legal career) I learned to type faster than people can speak. I type about 110 words a minute.
I shot 78 on the golf course today and still managed to post a few comments on my phone. I also used a can of EZ Off Oven Cleaner and cleaned my stove after the round, while also posting comments here.
I love this blog. I've been commenting on it since its inception. Ann is one of the few people who mostly allow free speech (although even she has banned a few of my personas over the many years.)
So yes, I do have a life. I enjoy my life. I'm very happy. And I also understand that we all have a purpose in life. And my purpose both as a journalist and as a lawyer has been to try to bring truth to people.
I doubt I've succeeded. But it's been fun.

I said it is one of the great "animating" principles, has been for decades, and I stand by that claim. I agree that it is unachievable by any desirable means. And yet the progressive left persists. I'm not sure how it relates to today's arguments, but frontier America, small town America, America from the Appalachians to the Sierra (or maybe it was from the Mississippi to the Rockies) did think of itself as largely egalitarian, and having to cope with the real 20th/21st century urban and multicultural America was quite traumatic.

Season 3 of "The White Lotus" was okay. Not great, not terrible, but watchable. Long arc television dramas have largely replaced movies (and novels?). "The White Lotus" benefited from that, allowing us to see characters develop over 8 episodes rather than over 100 minutes. But the series doesn't (in most cases) carry characters over from one season to the next, so you don't get to see the long form plot and development over several seasons. Most people would (I think anyway) prefer seeing the same characters and actors confronting new situations over the series' development, rather than see new characters facing what are largely very similar situations. I think that's eventually going to hurt the show. The series seems to be grinding down into repetitiveness.

The problem is fundamental ideology. If you believe that government has the power and the duty to take people's stuff and give it to other people your view of government is based on the use of violence and coercion.
People who follow the theories of Marx will never be peaceful in a free high trust society. They will always undermine the system until they obtain the violent power they need to implement their coercive ideology.
They will infest institutions and build up armies until they have enough people and power to take control. And when they get control large percentages of the population will be killed, imprisoned, or starve to death.
This has been demonstrated at least a dozen times over the last 2 centuries.

I was thinking about Anders Breivik yesterday. He was the Norwegian who was angry about Muslim immigration spoiling Europe in general and his country in particular, and so in 2011, he murdered 77 members of the ruling socialist party, 8 with a car bomb next to a government building (which also inflicted hundreds of injuries) and then 69 killed at a socialist party youth camp, mostly by shooting (two died trying to escape the island where the camp was located). Although his political views were diametrically opposite from Tyler Robinson, he was still an extremist who believed that his opponents were so dangerous to his country that they deserved to die. And both were going after the next generation of political opponents, since the youth camp that Breivik shot up probably had most of the up-and-coming members of that socialist party. Robinson only had a body count of 1, but it was an extremely influential 1.

My preferred way of doing it would be to assure that socialists and Marxists are prevented from indoctrinating the nation's youth and required that public school curricula include the failures of socialism and communism. Unfortunately, quite the opposite has happened. And attempts to do as I suggest have failed in the past.
The University of Texas was tasked to teach mandatory classes in American History and American Government in response to the Red Scare in the '50s. In the '80s, to the horror of the Texas Legislature it was discovered that the Government Department was riddled with Marxists and a purge of the reds ensued. The leftist ideology always creeps back in, and the legislature periodically steps in to prune it back. Race-based student centers were established in this century and have now all been closed. It seems an endless cycle.
All I can think is to do is to better educate the young. Make sure the teachers have training in the real-world results of communism. Sadly, Marxist thinking seems to have deeply rooted itself in our institutions.

The left needs to be called to account for normalizing violence - no argument from me there. But Charlie Kirk was in the midst of doing what was thought to be impossible: persuading young college students to take another look at the indoctrination they were receiving, to question it, and ultimately to reject it. Do you really think that taking up arms against the other side is going to be even close to as successful? Or will it just cement their belief that we are what they think we are?
Charlie Kirk was vilified by Democrats as a result of his Christian faith and his success in pulling young people out of their muck. He was murdered by a leftist catspaw for the same reasons.

The left wing people who interfere, cause ruckus, loot State Street, beat up Dem legislators, pull down statues to abolitionists and to Liberty are generally not leftists OF Madison or even of Dane County. Many of them come from other parts of Wisconsin. Some come from as far away as Chicago and beyond. Conservatives and people on the right of Madison or beyond, virtually never cause violence or even ruckus here (save for some drunken Ohio State fans who left a disgusting mess on the UW Terrace 12 or so years ago and come to think of it they might have been Obama voters.)

Among many morally reprehensible policies to choose from, their proudest accomplishement is masked men disapearing people in vans with no process.
