Jaq said...: Sometimes somebody says something that makes a light go on and you never see anything the same after you hear it. For me a big one was when John Mearsheimer said that no matter how nice and well meaning the leader of a country that is a potential rival is, you don't know who is going to be in charge in a decade or two, and they may be totally different, so you have to treat the current leader, even if he is totally inoffensive, as if he were an existential threat, no matter what the truth is, because people just don't understand abstract arguments, and the abstract argument is that his country might be a threat in the future, and this eventuality cannot be allowed to develop. The state must become as strong as possible. Normal people, by that I mean people with morals and kind hearts, need to be manipulated because they will never accept the abstract possibility of the appearance of a risk as a justification to send their son off to war. That's called "structural realism."

There are other schools of thought, just as "defensive realism" which says that if a state gains too much power, it no longer deters potential enemies, but instead forces them to join together in opposition, and so it actually decreases security. The SCO meeting sort of tips the balance to this way of thinking.

It seems like a rational person would be happy that two nuclear armed states are no longer enemies, and are settling their differences through negotiation, by this I mean China and India, but to us, it's frightening, for some reason. Yes, it is true that the House Oversight Committee released a batch of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein on September 2, 2025. However, the committee's claim that it released "ALL the subpoenaed documents" is not accurate.
