“Of all the traders, Rubin displayed raw trading instinct,” Mr. Lewis wrote.
He became an object of fascination on Wall Street, Mr. Lewis wrote, for his application of behavioral research to mortgage sales. He later became infamous for his role in a $250 million loss in 1987 at Merrill Lynch.... He was held in awe among the institutional players in the MBS market in the 80's. After he blew up and was fired at Merrill, Bear hired him like the next day. He was that good. And his big loss was viewed as a failure of risk management (which sucked at Merrill, and was excellent at Bear).
What I find funny is that all these alleged events took place when he was in his 60's and 70's. My idea of a wild time now is a second glass of beer.

The main thing about being rich is that you can indulge every fantasy. You can buy anything legal and most things illegal with ease. Some average truck drivers and baristas have the same fantasies, but not the budget to build the room or buy the 'guests.' New money always spends more than old money, for the 3rd generation couldn't earn diddly without an inheritance (see Princes Andrew and Harry).
Tech (Silicon Valley), finance (NYC), and politics (DC) literally attract psychopaths. These people have no fear, lots of ambition, and a will to power. Only 1% or 2% of the general population has these traits, but the centers of ambition concentrate these personalities.The smart psychopaths are able to balance their professional and personal interests...the dumb and impulsive ones go to prison.
