"Drug-sniffing dogs swarmed St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary last week when cops were called for possible illegal narcotics on the scenic, tree-covered campus...."
"Instead, what they found were first-degree relics — the body or body fragments, such as bone or flesh — of Saint Raphael of Brooklyn, a Syrian immigrant who founded St. Nicholas Cathedral in what is now downtown Brooklyn and was glorified in 2000.... 'The people that found them didn’t know what they were,' said Father Michael Nasser of the seminary. 'They weren’t in a typical container.... We got to meet the K-9 units who came out here for a special prayer and blessing and allowed us to thank them for all they do....'"

Best feel-good story of the day (so far).
Sent by a Tsar to subvert America's indigeneous and original faiths.
Though I have to admit, I like the anti-Islamic polemics bit.
Since the relics are human remains, the Post is quite properly not showing them. But how would anyone mistake them for drugs? Orthodox don't cremate, so it's not like it was unidentified powder. Maybe the skin was so mummified that it looked like a chunk of black tar heroin or something? (And why would a seminarian recognize that?)
Interesting also that the church called the police. Wouldn't think most denominations would do that. After all calling the police could lead to an arrest, which is an offense against God for most churches nowadays. Maybe the Orthodox aren't just the IC XC NI KA church, they're still the FA FO church? Maybe because it was on the outdoor "campus" part of the seminary and they may have had problems with bums before? CC, JSM
There's got to be a rock band out there called The Drug-Sniffing Dogs.
Where have I seen this before?
"What have we got here, sister?"
"It's critical. The buying and selling of dope may be the last vestige of free enterprise left."
We forget that Roman Syria was the capital of Christendom in the 1st century. Saul of Tarsus was on his way to Syria.. to denounce the Damascenes for their heresy when he underwent conversion. The Christians are still there and still persecuted.
One wonders why those drug-sniffing dogs were excited by the smell of the relics of an Orthodox priest. Incense is used in many Orthodox ceremonies and liturgical proceedings. Incense is also frequently used in American drug culture, as we know. Have those canine LEOs learned that association through experience? It would be an interesting investigation.

They're touring with St Raphael of Brooklyn! Saw them at The Troubadour. CC, JSM

So the incense is just noise in the training data that becomes a feature in the dog’s predictive model due to its correlation with drugs. A very common issue.
I think they need to put the relics in an artistic little gold box with a window you can see them through, that would make it unlikely that they were drugs.
Have the dogs been nominated for sainthood yet?
I've been described as a relic, and dogs love me.

I'm going to see Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band tonight.
I good name for a band of these classic rockers would be "The Dug Up Relics".
You're a venerated saint aorund here, Bagoh20.
Why did someone attending the seminary not know about the relics? A simple "welcome to seminary" tour with a stop to show where they keep their founder's bits and pieces could have prevented this.
I don't even know how to be a Catholic. It seems complicated.
That's okay, the folks at St. Nicholas Cathedral are not Catholic. "I don't even know how to be a Catholic. It seems complicated."
See, I told you.
I guess if you’re a bit on the naive side the incense that the orthodox burn during church services could smell a big like weed.
