"The success rate of getting to a candid place with politicians is very small... and this is somebody who’s divisive and controversial and has a history that’s somewhat sordid..."

"... not by any fault of her own, but I just didn’t see where I could go with that."

Not by any fault of her own?! What suddenly happened to the asserted desire to speak from "a candid place"?

The article doesn't say the Clinton team pushed to have her on Maron's podcast, only that his producer "pitched Clinton, fresh off her loss... in the 2016 election." He said "You’re the guy to do this" and Maron "adamantly disagreed."

Was he afraid he wouldn't get to a candid place or that he, at least, ran the risk of being candid in a way that would hurt the Democrats.

One does not become “controversial,” nor does one have a “history that’s somewhat sordid” without there being considerable “fault of her own.”

Nobody ... and I mean NOBOBY ... wants anything to do with Hillary Clinton. Except for bin Laden, she is the most hated person in the United States of America.

Nobody likes her. Including her husband.

Poor Hillary. She has no agency. Things just happen to her.

I was thinking to say Maron could have been the left’s Joe Rogan but yesterday I learned what they meant by we need our own Joe Rogan and Maron isn’t it…

How is Hillary still a thing? When Josh Beckett ate chicken and drank beer in the locker room before games, fucked up the season and left we weren’t talking about him eight years later…

Democrats seem to have a really difficult time getting to "a candid place". Don't they, Inga?

This also applies to your other thread on the unmentionable "incident" in Noisy-le-Sec, France. They just can't bring themselves to utter the truth when it runs counter to their beliefs.

Who the hell is Marc Maron?

Ann Althouse said...

A difference between Rogan and Maron is, perhaps, that Rogan let go of allegiance to the Democratic Party and went wherever he wanted, talking to other people for the sake of talking and following whatever is interesting. Rogan is a genius at relationships, so his social life and career did not collapse. But he was still severely punished. It's intimidating for most people. They toe the line. Maybe Maron wouldn't have felt like ending his show if he had seized onto the freedom Rogan took for himself. Allegiance to the Democratic Party is dull work and dishonesty is a burden. But lay that burden down and risk social death.

There's no such thing as a "liberal comic." Liberals aren't funny. That's why nobody, including you, has ever heard of this guy before this story and why you won't ever hear about him ever again in your life.

I've never been able to listen for more than 10- minutes of a Maron podcast. His major malfunction is he thinks that his quick wit is actually intelligence. Nothing to do with his political leanings. That'said, it was a clever and cynical move not to grant Hillary a slot on his Pod.

he was afraid, that he'd risk being suicided

All the best comics are liberal. Just ask Tim Dillon

I never heard of him before this althouse post. Looked him up, and he basically does Show biz folks, musicians and comics. With the occassional Libtard political type. I saw one with Carol Burnett that I might listen to, but on the whole I don't care about actors. And most "comedians" today aren't funny.

Liberals aren't funny.

Well, not intentionally...

Looking at the podcast archive he does a lot of podcasts with old timers. I see ones with Arnold, Carl Reiner, Gabe Kaplan (that no talent hack), Norm, Letterman, Jane Fonda, Peter Fonda, John cleese, etc.

Cmon liberals aren't funny. You mean today's liberal/leftists arent. Larry David is funny. He may be a dumb prick, and a libtard, but he's funny.

Why would Maron, or anyone, want to talk to Hillary after her loss? He didn't want to get that stink on him.

For progressives, you could be bludgeoning them in the face with a hammer, and if you're a progressive too, they'll not like what you're doing, but they won't think less of you for it.

Clinton came out of, or was rather exposed in, her Water Closet. Her husband is just too socially progressive for polite company. #NoJudgment #NoLabels #LoveWins

Liberals diverge over politically congruent ranges, much like the viable operational range of wind turbines.

"being candid in a way that would hurt the Democrats" Right, can't have that. Progs can't even be candid about being candid. And of course, you have to deflect the lack of candor in Mrs. Phony herself.

Mort Sahl was a liberal comic. At least before he got lost in conspiracy theories. Generally, though, funnymen build their careers on just being comics or comedians. They when they're already known, liberalism or conservatism comes out, either because that's who they are or as a reaction to how things have come to be. Those who start out ideological and aren't smart enough to stop, don't rise very far.

I remember that Marc Maron used to be on Letterman, but don't remember anything that he ever said or did. I think he was sort of a watered-down Richard Lewis. Lewis's act was all about his personal problems. Put him on TV with a condemning, unsympathetic Ann Coulter or with an approving, encouraging Larry David and you might pigeonhole him as progressive, but that wasn't who he was.

Seems a pity Maron did not conduct an interview. In year end Gallup polls 2002-2016, Clinton was the most admired woman. 2017 she was supplanted by Obama. Coincidence?

Aggie said...

Another in the theme of the Progressive Left's grand search for the New Voice - the broadcasting personality that will lift them out of this grand funk they're in and start articulating coherent thoughts.

I think we need to coin something describing this mystical quest, for reference's sake. The 'Search for Jeaux Rogan', how about that?

"The name Jeaux means "joyful" and is of French origin. It is associated with an idealistic personality and a desire for peace and harmony..." Seems appropriately phoney.

Ackshully, Todd Kimsey played Ned Isakoff ("You are on our list!").

Maron has a bunch of TV and film appearances to his credit and, apparently, had a self-titled sitcom from 2013-16 on IFC.

LD has a level of self-awareness entirely lacking in younger Progs. I notice this lurks in the mid-Boomer Progs of my acquaintance. Say, Class of ‘72. No matter how hysterical their professed politics, the bullshit meter occasionally forces a rational observation now and then.

My wife went through a Marc Maron phase about ten years ago, and she used to listen to his podcast when insomnia hit her, which was often.

He was not funny, and very progressive. His podcast with Obama was cringe and he was very fawning.

Thankfully I haven't heard about or from Maron in many years now.

She's trying now to get Trump to prolong the Ukraine war by promising the Nobel Peace Prize to him if he makes Putin an offer he is guaranteed not to accept. The manipulation is so transparent. Everybody butters up Trump, even Putin butters him up, but Hillary buttering him up is pretty funny.

RCOCEAN II said...

Outside of the directors, producers, and top writers, most show biz folks are conformists who "go with the flow". That's particularly true of actors, who always have to worry "Will they cast me?". Charlton Heston was one of the biggest stars ever, but he knew his career was over when he became President of the NRA and attacked Warner records for putting out rap songs about killing cops.

Tina Trent said...

I think it's cowardice, too. What sorts of questions could you possibly ask her without it becoming aggro? Maron has a mostly liberal base -- there's no upside to asking questions of Hillary Clinton.
