The em dash is supposedly a dead giveaway, but the NYT will use em dashes, what was a giveaway was that it didn't sound like anything that a New York Times writer, or a human being, would actually write.
I see Hannio spotted another em dash, the case that this was written by AI strengthens. NYT might use them, but it doesn't overuse them.
I should have written: "I see Hannio spotted another em dash —the case that this was written by AI strengthens."

A hint of a hoax
…and after releasing the orange shark he kept circling the boat, as if he was trying to talk to the fishermen. The shark led them to a turtle stuck in an abandoned fishing net, so the fishermen cut the net. The shark and turtle were so happy they waved a loving flipper to the fishermen. The next week the fishermen spotted the duo who were bringing them a tuna and a dozen lobsters as a thank you for saving them….

Why? There are photos and videos of the catch, the shark is definitely orange. There is also a genetic explanation - albinism and some other rare occurrence that makes the eyes white. Also, red and orange light are absorbed by seawater below 25-30 feet of depth, so at the depths nurse sharks live (200-300 feet deep, where they primarily feed on bottom-dwellers) they would appear equally as gray as a normally-colored nurse shark.
I'm going with hoax on this.

Was this caused by eating too many carrot fish? I didn't know carrot fish existed, but they must. My question is whether a shark would turn red from eating too many beet fish.

tommyesq-Yes, I saw the video. Unfortunately we are in an age when photos and videos can quite easily be manipulated to alter what is actually depicted. How hard is it to change grey to orange? Even I can change the colors of objects in photos that I take with my phone, and I am a dinosaur.
I originally took the bait. I love unusual natural phenomena. "Thank you for taking my bait" and Professor Naranjo tipped me off. The NYT has been had.
