Maureen Dowd's sister got her car stolen in Washington D.C.

"Two polite officers who responded to our call said they could do little, amid a rash of brazen car thefts by teenagers. One officer said that, even if they saw the perp driving in her car, they could not chase him, because of laws passed by the D.C. Council.... The next morning, though, an officer... banged on her door. Her car was found in a park, running, nearly out of gas. When she collected it, after paying a $215 towing charge, she found an odoriferous collection: half-eaten pizza, grape soda cans, fast-food wrappers, a used condom and a couple of debit cards.... [T]he police said to throw [the cards] away... Then... she got over $1,800 worth of speed-camera tickets that the car thieves had racked up going 70 in 25-mile-per-hour zones, and some for running red lights.... She had to go down to headquarters on Friday to get the police report so she could appeal the tickets...."

Writes Maureen Dowd, in "Criminal Fights Crime" (NYT).

The final line is: "Even if Trump is being diabolical, Democrats should not pretend everything is fine here. Because it’s not."

I like to think the Democrats need to offer solutions, not just admit that there are problems. Of course, it's awful to deny that the problems are really that bad or that we deserve the problems or that side effects of solving the problems are worse than the problems. But assuming Democrats admit there is a terrible problem — and Dowd is only denying that "everything is fine" — they seem to want to focus on how bad Trump's solutions are. He's reaching out solving problems like mad, almost like a challenge on "The Apprentice," where there was always a severe time crunch and points were given for taking action... bigly.

So what's the right solution? If Democrats don't have a better solution... well, maybe they will get away with that. First, do no harm. That's a standard wise position to take. And Democrats do get elected, over and over, in the cities with the worst crime. Why change what's been working... especially when you can't think of any way to do better than Trump? Stand back, let him do the dirty work, in his crazed enthusiasm, keep deploring him, and prepare to reclaim power over the improved city he will return to your safekeeping.

Uh, the Democrats don't want to do anything about crime. Or rather they don't want to do the only thing that will stop crime, and that is punishing criminals and hiring more police.

They want to, and have been doing, the exact opposite. Defunding the police, refusing to convict criminals, and letting them out on minimal or even zero bail. Their standard tactics are to (1) Deny crime is a problem (2) call Republicans racists (3) demand gun control and (4) assert we need to address the "Root causes".

What is their motivation? You tell me. Its not "compassion" because they show zero "compassion" when the criminals are J6ers, Rightwingers, whites, or Trump supporters.

Dowd is your typical upper class libtard. When it was someone else aka "the Lower classes" getting robbed raped and murdered, well who cares? But when her sister, HER SISTER, is a victim, well crime really is out of control.

Of course playing hypocrisy bingo with libtards means you win everytime. The problem of big city crime is long standing, and there's zero desire in blue cities to change it. The change in DC came from Republican Trump. Once he leaves, it will go back to where it was.

Libtards love crime. And will bitch and moan when it hits them personally, but have zero desire to fight it. They'd rather accept it, or run away.

The percentage of registered voters that vote in large cities is often abysmally low. Couple that with (almost) monolithic union vote and you have your answer. I lived in NYC for 40+ years and the quality of candidates declined substantially over the years. The City Council was composed of loons, the degree of lunacy was the only difference among members. Every once in a while you had a decent mayor but the standard candidate was piss poor and people just stopped voting in local elections.

The problem is that blacks are disproportionately responsible for crime in cities. Enforcing criminal laws therefore disproportionately impacts blacks. This is obviously a result of systemic racism to liberals because they refuse to accept that blacks are more likely to commit crimes. The solution is to not enforce criminal law which leads to more crime, but to a supposed reduction in crime rates reported.

The root cause... What is that? What is THE Root Cause?

It boils down to- individuals. Not meth, not alcohol, nor crack, but individuals.

So- what do we do with them? The homeless, the drug addicts, the petty thieves, etc.?

All organized societies since recorded time have faced this. What to do with losers in life. Historically, they've been eliminated. Heinlein's observation was (similar to) it's never been a crime to kill a hobo. A ne'er do well? Found dead? Even an obvious homicide? The authorities wouldn't care- good riddance to bad rubbish. Case closed.

But we're more civilized then that. Or are we? The new tactic of blockading roads is being met with some states passing laws saying go ahead- run them over. No crime. And most people support that. For the drug addicts, the homeless, often the same, etc., we can incarcerate them in mental institutions or prisons, or just not care if they disappear.

Take your pick.

I see another attempt in this thread to push the Democrat talking point that states contributing National Guard to DC have higher crime rates than DC. Given that no source is provided for this assertion, I will suspect that it is likely from a recent Bureau of Justice Statistics attempt to rank crime rates in about two dozen states based on data from the National Crime Victimization Survey. I ran across this article in Chronicles (H/T to Scott Johnson at Powerline) by Jeffrey Anderson, head of the BJS during Trump's first term.

Two selections from the article linked above.

The report’s comparisons across other states are similarly suspect. The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting figures collected from police show that over the years in question Georgia had a higher rate of violent crime than did the state of Washington, by about 10 percent. The BJS report, however, maintains not only that it was Washington’s violent crime rate that was higher than Georgia’s, but higher by triple. Likewise, the FBI figures show that North Carolina had a 25 percent higher violent crime rate than Indiana from 2020–22, while the BJS report again skews the opposite direction, showing Indiana’s rate was more than double North Carolina’s.

... BJS is relying on the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which dates to the Nixon administration and is the largest crime survey in the country and one of the largest federal surveys on any topic. The NCVS is an indispensable resource because it collects crime data from actual victims, rather than relying merely upon police reports. But the NCVS was principally designed to capture national statistics, not state-by-state ones. Its sample size and methodology are much better suited to the former than the latter. If one doesn’t (or doesn’t adequately) survey a key, high-crime neighborhood in Atlanta, for instance, the results won’t have much of an effect on the national numbers, but it could have a big effect on the numbers from Georgia.

Mr. Anderson goes in to other details about the provenance of this never-before attempted use of the NCSV as well as the dodgy nature of attempting to use data from the 2020 and 2021 NCVSs for trending due to the impact COVID restrictions had on data collection.

Aside from this little partisanship problem, Freder's implied objection to any way of beginning to cope with homelessness unless it "address[es] the root problems" is part of the leftist Unified Field Theory issue: you have to solve all the problems at once using one elegant theoretical approach. Juvie justice doesn't have to be a picnic. It can be swift and hard, but without lifetime side effects.

Every jurisdiction is different, but I am pretty sure all of them have bench trials only, with a standard of proof lower than BRD. So you can get the yewt behind bars faster and more often than if he was in adult court.

Now what happens behind those bars? Yes, in most jurisdictions the juvie joints have been taken over by woke social workers. But they don't have to be. You could run the place like a British boarding school or a military academy, with heavy discipline and harsh workloads - both academic and physical work.

Some of the yewts will be future homeless guys, with multiple wicked problems - mental illness, addiction, etc.

But most of them are just depraved on account'a they're deprived, Officer Krupke. They were never held to a standard at home or school. If the juvie joint provides discipline and positive role models, there's some hope for them.

I would also suggest giving the yewts a new identity and a new location, miles away from home, if they leave the juvie joint at 18. Maybe a college or vo-tech scholarship or a deal where the military waives normal background requirements, if the yewt has a good record in the joint.

If people complain about the freebies being given to delinquents, show them how harsh the juvie joint is, and ask them if they want their kid to spend 3 or 4 years in there for $3000 of trade-school tuition.

Of course the joint would actually have to be harsh.

"And moving homeless people to God knows where with no real plan for addressing the root problems,"

Root problem is no jobs .Fortunately, Trump is bringing jobs back to USA, and providing jobs by deporting illegals.

Next up, making drug use in public against the law.

"First, do no harm. That's a standard wise position to take." But not the prog position. They like to harm normies. They like to harm the norms themselves. But they do not like to harm black harm-doers.

Druggies and psychos camping out on city sidewalks in tents are a problem.
On the other hand, I have seen San Jose Ca. clear out mobile home encampments, probably not licensed, but parked in non residential, out of the way spots.
Saw one tent encampment hidden in bushes alongside freeway being cleared. Drove by the spot frequently and never noticed it until that day.

“I wonder if one could claim on insurance?”

Ha! Sir, the policy clearly states that we do not pay damages when the car was used in the commission of a crime, car theft is a crime.

“I don't think it works that way. If you can prove it wasn't you driving, you're not guilty. Not like a parking ticket.“

Ha, in a blue city?

Sir sir stop speaking, the city knows nothing except that it is your car. Pay at the window or leave your drivers license at the window. Your choice.

What Maureen Dowd is saying is that if you want to get NY Times liberals to support conservative law-and-order Republicans - you have to commit crimes against them and their families and friends.

Is everyone paying attention: The way you get NY Times liberals to support law and order is to commit crimes against them.

The Dowd Solution it's called.

Car thievery is like horse thievery. Stocks, bamboo canes and jail.

FullMoon said...

Easier to steal a car now than back in the days when it took a little bit of ability.
Remote devices are available that will mimic your codes and open the door and start your car.
Friend in San Jose had a 2024 Camaro stolen like that. Retrieved in Oakland abandoned after sideshow event.
All the thieves need do is cruise neighborhoods, pushing remote, until they see flashing light indicating connection.

Usta be, had to break, or jimmy a window, pop the hood, run a wire from coil to battery, quick touch of positive to solenoid, and Bob's your uncle.
Anyway,that's the rumor

DNA! DNA!. A case for Forensic Files. Or, wait a few years, Cold Case Files.

Freder wants root causes? The left's rejection of Judeo-Christian values is the root cause. Compare homelessness and crime among the Amish to DC. Which is more Christian? Which is more immoral?

You want to solve homelessness and crime? Two choices: 1) Brutal repression. You know, go Old Testament or Islamic: Chop off hands of crooks, whippings, beatings. Drug abuse is a crime that is severely punished. Eye for an Eye and all that. Or....
2) Go back to teaching people how to govern themselves. To be Christian. Self control. Self Sacrifice. Responsibility, putting others first. Charitable work. Praying to God and then working hard.

Democrats would rather die than take option 2. And they would rather kill than even consider it.

Best thing about the story is that it is another far-lefty providing an anecdote that solidifies Trump's position.
And, Dowd knows that and published anyway

TDS does this sort of stuff to people.

This is one of the big problems with the Democrat's approach to crime.

It is easy to scream: "oh the liberals are preventing police from chasing criminals". Hey dumbass, the reason many municipalities have rules against car chases is to protect the police and innocent bystanders, not because they are "soft on crime".

You do know that the two leading causes of death of on-duty police are firearms and traffic accidents (and they are roughly equal).

Wow. That was really stupid. You suck at dancing.

I like to think the Democrats need to offer solutions, not just admit that there are problems.

They can't offer actual solutions, because it's their current "solutions" that are causing the problem

Dude1394 said...

They can’t do anything to stop crime because that would mean they have to put a lot of black people in jail. Democrats ONLY care about power and doing something about crime would mean putting the people that give them power in jail. No effing way.

Now what happens behind those bars? Yes, in most jurisdictions the juvie joints have been taken over by woke social workers. But they don't have to be. You could run the place like a British boarding school

But without the sodomy, right?

Bullshit. The city of Seattle (and the Democrats in the Washington state Legislature) specifically bent the knee to the 'Defund the Police' thugs and it had/has jackshit to do with traffic safety.

Freder does not know that the leading cause of LEO death and injury involving motor vehicles is not being hit by drivers speeding substantially over the posted limit, or by collisions during high-speed pursuits. More often, officers are injured by drivers, who having been stopped, attempt to flee and strike the LEO in the process. Another deadly motor vehicle situation that is also more prevalent than being hit by a speeding car, is the death or injury of a LEO who is struck by a second, not-involved vehicle whose driver fails for whatever reason to take appropriate avoidance action when approaching the scene of a traffic enforcement stop.

"I like to think the Democrats need"... a smidge of humility to admit they were so wrong that they have branded common as rightwing-nazi-fascists. Then they can get on to policies that are better Democrat implementations of common sense for the common good and common prosperity and common liberty etc.

We could all use a hefty serving of humble pie. However, ingenuousness won't save the Democrats. They've gotten themselves damned to political hell through aggravated stupidity, i.e. stupidity + arrogance -- being too stupid to know you're stupid and proud of it. How else can one explain the ease by which Trump is able to make them adopted insanely foolish 80/20 positions on every issue?

Quaestor said...

Bodycam evidence is unequivocal. Among the most hazardous situations for LEOs, apart from being shot, are routine traffic stops of suspected impaired drivers. An increasing percentage of these violators refuse to peaceably obey lawful police instructions, such as turn off you motor, roll down your window, present your driver's license and registration, and step out of the vehicle. This is why many states have taken to assigning traffic enforcement duty to pairs of officers working in separate vehicles -- one to approach a suspect vehicle in the usual manner, from behind, and a second to confine the suspect vehicle from the front. Obviously, this complicates enforcement and reduces the effective number of traffic patrols on duty by half, but it has reduced injuries all around.

Big Mike writes, "But without the sodomy, right?"

Sodomy? From the left side of the aisle, that word has been hardly been heard since Woodrow Wilson, not from the persuasion that substitutes minor attracted person for pedophile. Since the majority of social workers are left-leaning, they see nothing wrong with the pederast and his catamite, consequently they don't discourage the practice.

The more "enlightened" the penal institution, the more butts are fucked.
