"I am totally convinced that if Russia raised their hands and said, 'We give up, we concede, we surrender..."

"... we will GIVE Ukraine and the great United States of America, the most revered, respected, and powerful of all countries, EVER, Moscow and St. Petersburg, and everything surrounding them for a thousand miles, the Fake News Media and their Democrat Partners would say that this was a bad and humiliating day for Donald J. Trump, one of the worst days in the history of our Country.' But that’s why they are the FAKE NEWS, and the badly failing Radical Left Democrats. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!"

Trump is on a roll on Truth Social this morning. That may be his best written work — most absurdly comic and yet too true — maybe ever.

I agree, the fake news media is truly and comically absurd, yet millions get their "facts", their "science", and their opinions from them. How the 38% of Americans who still support the Democrats got so absurdly dumb should be studied and produce multiple dissertations and PhDs in psychology and political science, but we all know those would never fly in academia. There is not a more serious and substantial issue in the field than this. It's real, pervasive and extremely dangerous to the future of mankind,... and the womens too, whatever that is.

This is a very apt and insightful comment. I am not being sarcastic despite who posted this.

The warmongers want a ceasefire so they can lace the ground with tripwires and European troops expand the war.

Trump wants peace.

The path to peace starts and ends with NATO and Russia both giving up territorial ambitions.

The only way to achieve that is pain for the political classes. Elections in the occupied territories and all countries involved would supply this pain.

@jim5301, FIFY. My point being that it might be right to criticize President Trump on some issue or another, but since his election his sole misstep has been that it is taking more than 24 hours to bring peace to Ukraine. Apparently he thought the US had some leverage that we don’t have after all. On everything else — literally everything else — he’s been right and his critics wrong. Considering that so far in this term he’s been the most active President since FDR in 1933, that’s saying something.

You can keep sniping at the President; it’s a free country after all (at least until the next Democrat occupies the Oval Office), but you do look kind of stupid, you know.

I’m an old man now, almost an octogenarian, and I can remember that when liberals believed that they were the smartest people in the room, that they had the best ideas, and they weren’t all that wrong. These days liberals still think they’re the smartest people in the room, but now they’re just being delusional and their ideas suck. A woman gets five years for welfare fraud, and thanks to 21st century liberals she gets to share her cell with a biological male convicted of rape. He says he’s trans, you see, so the state provides him a biological female cellmate to prey upon. Good work liberals! Good work, feminists!

Countries beg to join, because they feel threatened. Usually this perception is accurate. Putin got two more to join, Sweden and Finland. Putin is the best salesman of NATO memberships since the USSR.
Most of the complaints about NATO expansion leave out the reason why. Its because the Soviets were such utter shits.
The more Putin acts like USSR II the more "NATO" he will sell.
If Putin wants less NATO then he, and Russia, should, maybe, act differently.

Jaq said...

Buwaya, what was the Cuban Missile Crisis about? Why did the world come to the brink of nuclear war? Let me remind you, we put missiles in Turkey, which the press never reported at the time, and the Soviets responded by putting missiles in Cuba, which lead to the brink of WWIII. Why? Did the Russians push it to the brink over those Cuban missiles? Nope, we did.

Why should any country that the US doesn't like want NATO in the area? Look what NATO did to Qaddafi, who died with an AK-47 rammed up his ass, this is what a "defensive only" military alliance does?

NATA has been involved in other wars of aggression that have led to refugee crises in Europe as well, Syria, first time, Iraq, in fact the Nazi states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania were awarded NATO membership on account of sending troops to participate in Desert Storm.

What about Yugoslavia? NATO divided that country up by force, which makes it pretty ironic when NATO complains about what Russia is doing by intervening in a civil war on its border that the US started by fomenting a coup in Kiev, which the Russian speaking parts of Ukraine rejected, and so took up arms in 2014.

Your press in Europe does not give you the whole story.

Why were the Soviets such utter shits? Because Hitler, like Napoleon, showed up in Moscow bent on conquest. The Soviets invasion of Europe was a counterattack against the second Western European attempt to conquer Russia. Stalin wasn't even Russian, he was Georgian, and Krushchev was Ukrainian, but let's forget all of that!

You should read some history to go along with the firehose of propaganda that is European media today.

I think that the plan to collapse the Russian Federation was modeled on the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which lost a war that it was considered that it absolutely had to win, and after this happened, its allies melted away and its credibility was destroyed, and the empire collapsed.

This was the hope, I think, behind this war with Russia that NATO and the US have been waging. It's why we provoked the war in Ukraine in the first place by putting the Maidan nazis in power there. We had been nursing this movement ever since the end of WWII, these fascists who were embittered by the Soviet defeat of Hitler, as a thorn in the USSR's side. The USSR is gone, but the anti Soviet zombie movement lived on.

People take about "Ruzzia" but the nazis they point to in Russia are always at Navalny rallies, Navalny was funded by the US to run for president in Russia. The whole Russiagate thing was projection.

As the Russians expanded east, they incorporated the native populations, they didn't wipe them out. It is this fact that we hope to use to divide Russia up along ethnic lines.

The Soviet Union voluntarily disbanded its empire.

When the the Lithuanians start celebrating the victory over Hitler? When NATO made them after admitting them.

Lithuanians generally prefer to approach their own history by honoring their fighters for resisting Soviet rule – and ignoring their active collaboration with the Nazis. The “victimization” approach largely precludes discussion about Lithuanian participation in Holocaust crimes and sparks chauvinistic sentiments. Recent threats to the Lithuanian Jewish community and signs of antisemitism highlight the problem. What were the attacks in Europe by the "Red Brigades"? These were NATO trained terrorist organizations which were intended as leave behinds in the case of a Soviet invasion that never came. I would tell you to open a history book and read about how wars are actually started, but that is too big an ask for somebody who has so internalized their position that they cannot question it. How about this, how about I refer to a story book, would that be simple enough for you, Inga?

Remember the Princess Bride, Vizzini, when he explains that he is in the lucrative business of starting wars? You don't need someone like Vizzini if your plan is to simply march your soldiers across your neighbor's border. No, you need to create the idea that the other guy started it.

If you don't believe that Vizzini is based on what real people have done in history, I refer you to the book, "The Guns of August" and you can read about the maneuvers people went through to assign "the odium" of starting the conflict to the other side. It's in the first few chapters, but I bet that would make your head hurt.

And BTW, the story of arguing your position by calling the other guy a ___-lover, I guess in this case and "orc lover" is filled with people who history has smiled on in the end, I bet.

(Not to mention that every court who looked at the orders found them unconstitutional - but of course judicial decisions are only "correct" when you agree with them.)

Roccean II, I asked Chat, "You said:
How many negative news story have been written about trump between that start of his first presidential victory and now? How many positive?" and got:

You're asking a fascinating—but extremely ambitious—question: “How many negative news stories have been written about Trump between the start of his first presidential victory and now? And how many positive?”

Why this is tough to quantify accurately

Enormous volume
Trump's media presence has been colossal. A Harvard study noted that in the first 100 days of his first presidency alone, his coverage outpaced that of all other newsmakers combined
Vox
+4
Shorenstein Center
+4
Vox
+4
. The scale is vast.

Lack of centralized tracking
Unlike approval ratings, there's no universal tally for “positive” vs. “negative” coverage. Sentiment analyses exist but are typically limited in scope or time.

Bias and methodology vary
Coverage tone can depend heavily on methodology—dictionary-based sentiment, manual labeling, or machine learning. Most public studies focus on short timeframes or specific campaigns, not continuous tracking since January 2017.

What studies and data are available

Media Research Center (2018 study)
Reported that 92% of media coverage of Trump’s first presidency was negative
Wikipedia
+1
. However, that’s a percentage-based snapshot, not a total count.

Sentiment analysis studies
Academic research on shorter periods (e.g., during the 2020 election) found that on Twitter, ~45.7% of Trump-related tweets were positive; on YouTube metadata, ~14.6% were positive
Shorenstein Center
+1
arXiv
+1
. These are social media, not news media.

Hackernoon article (2020)
Notes negative sentiment around Trump dipped after his COVID diagnosis—but again, not absolute counts
Wikipedia
+4
Shorenstein Center
+4
Pew Research Center
+4
Hacker Noon
+2
Vox
+2
.

So, in summary:

Exact counts of negative vs. positive news stories about Trump from his first electoral win (January 2017) to today (August 18, 2025) are not publicly available.

There is evidence that media coverage skewed overwhelmingly negative early in his presidency—perhaps over 90% of stories—but that’s a relative percentage, not a sheer number.

Sentiment studies on social media (e.g., Twitter, YouTube) show varied positivity levels in short windows, but don’t reflect traditional news stories.

If you'd like to dig deeper:

Here are some options:

Subscribe to or commission a media-monitoring service (e.g., LexisNexis, MediaQuant) that can run sentiment analysis across all mainstream outlets.

Narrow the timeframe (e.g., first 100 days, 2024 election cycle) to get estimates from academic studies or media-center reports.

Explore public sentiment data via platforms like Pew, academic journals, or consulting firms that sometimes share aggregated sentiment stats.

Let me know if you'd like links to specific tools or studies by time period—I’m happy to help you explore further!

That is EXACTLY what you do every single day here on these threads. Don’t you realize this?

You can be forgiven for your stupidity and inability to read simple words.

I do not claim moral superiority over anyone anymore when the topic is war. I made that mistake when I was young and I thought I was doing good things.

Then I went to war and shot people and participated in awful things. I was betrayed by my leaders and used as a pawn. I realized that all claims of morality and right and wrong in war were cover for evil and deception. Anyone claiming to be the good person in war is contributing to evil outcomes.

Now I only care about the results. I don’t care what anyone says. I care what they do. War is about who lives and who dies and who is allowed to define the social contract.

In 10 years nothing will be different in Ukraine for the people living there no matter who wins except there will be fewer men around and fewer kids. The parties in this war are the same parties that betrayed us in Afghanistan and Iraq.

There will be a bunch of oligarchs in Moscow ruling over some of them and some Oligarchs in Kyiv ruling over others. There will be corrupt warmongers in Washington DC who line their pockets with war profits. There will be greedy Europeans who want to replace their colonies in Africa with colonies in Asia.

There will be a bunch of cowards wearing Ukraine flag pins with Ukrainian flags in their social media bios wearing the bloody shirts they stain in the graves of soldiers they care nothing about. Most of these people are the shitheads that called us murderers and called Bush a war criminal.

The only person who cares about all of the little people involved is Trump. The attacks on Trump’s attempts to end this war from moral degenerates like you could not be more hypocritical and despicable.

Ukraine was trying to become a proper European country, the model was Poland. The critical element was EU membership. The effect of that would have been a massive reduction in corruption, and a great reduction in "political risk" of investments, as there was some sort of oversight (even if only only a matter of perception) of potential political excesses by formerly bitter factions. Normal administration and normal politics became possible. This is how Spain, for instance, finally entered the "First World" in the 1980s.

Ukraine offers $100bn weapons deal to Trump to win security guarantees ~ FT

The reality of playing a completely transactional game is your negotiating partners may be better than you at putting together a winning set of transactions, and then offering you a deal you cannot reject. And that deal may be more what they want than what you thought you were going to get.

Brilliant political moves by Ukraine, the EU and UK!

Presses all the right Trump buttons by matching his stated bluster and goals and giving him a chance to look great (at least in his own eyes).

Immediate increase in tangible military support for Ukraine gives them the tools to hold back Russian advances and push them back while continuing to chew up military targets inside Russia.

Huge short and long term financial commitment by EU, UK and Ukraine proves to Putin and Russia Europe’s overwhelming united commitment to stop Putin and his criminal gang dead in their tracks,

Combines with crackdown on India’s and China’s buying Russian oil and gas, which takes the final steps to cripple Russia’s economy and provide a critical bargaining chip in both country’s Tariff bargaining, again making Trump look good.

Takes advantage of a weakened Russian military and economy by removing Putin’s options for rebuilding his military or his war footing economy during a staged temporary halt in fighting. All Putin’s claims he doesn’t want a cease fire are because his military desperately needs a cease fire! He has run out of tanks. Ukraine is chewing up his military production, oil and gas production and infrastructure, and he can’t rebuild it fast enough. And politically he cannot keep throwing Russian men into a meat grinder in Ukraine.

Trump has been placed in a position where he will have to participate in the world calling Putin’s bluff.

There are different ways to prosperity and security. The conflicts between the rich countries like Germany and the poor ones like Greece might have been a sign that not all was skittles and beer in the European Union. Greece's GDP per capita was 56% of the EU average per capita GDP. Ukraine's was 12%. It would take a lot of work to bring up that average and until that happens, Ukraine will get an awful lot of funding from the EU. Maybe the EU will be able to assure that the funding goes where it's supposed to. Maybe not.

My eyes are filling with tears, I’m laughing so hard.

Third, the territory being given us is absurdly comic, “Moscow and St. Petersburg, and everything surrounding them for a thousand miles” includes all of the following countries and parts of several others: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Romania, Moldova, and, wait for it, Ukraine. stop. When it comes to total people murdered, the Wounded Knee massacre wouldn't even have been in the top 100 among the massacres of Genghis Khan, Hitler, Stalin, or Mao, and probably not among the massacres the Indians committed against each other, either.

What wiped out most of the Indians was smallpox and measles, to which they had no immunity. That would have happened whenever first contact was made, whichever side made the first crossing: if Aztecs had sailed to Europe or Africa before Columbus, it would have happened then.

Of course, Europe gave the Americas smallpox, measles, and hard liquor, but they got syphilis, gonorrhea, cocaine, and tobacco in return, so the devastation went both ways.

The oligarchs in DC and Ukraine didn't "mismanage" shit. Both governments were corrupt and stole billions from US taxpayers in a not complicated money laundering scheme. The Ukrainian Oligarchs were busy selling many of the weapons we sent them.

I would like to know who actually made the call to cancel elections in Ukraine and to jail the political opposition. Was it Biden's handlers or was it Zelensky?

Either way everyone involved in turning Ukraine into a klepto-autocracy should be killed. Ukrainians are being drug off the street by press gangs and fed to a meat grinder serving a dictator that cancelled elections and wore $50k designer dictator uniforms.

And here's Achilles telling more bald-faced lies. Ukraine is in fact a democracy, Zelenskyy is not corrupt,* has not jailed the political opposition, there is no evidence that any weapons have been sold to third parties, elections have been postponed, not canceled, as required by the Ukrainian constitution, and so on. Of course, this is the same guy who was complaining on a previous thread that Zelenskyy hadn't followed the Mingsk [sic!] accords (signed and immediately violated by Russia in 2014) when he wasn't elected until 2019.

*I've pointed this out before, to deafening silence from the likes of Achilles and Jaq, but Hunter Biden left Ukraine and Burisma, never to return, the very month Zelenskyy was elected. All that corruption was on Poroshenko, whom the Ukrainians voted out in great part because of his corruption. Of course, the most corrupt oligarch of all was Yanukovych, who had a net worth of $12 billion (with a B) on a salary of $2,000 a month, besides slaughtering unarmed demonstrators, and Jaq is still whining about how he should have served out his term. The fact is that Ukraine was a "klepto-autocracy" under Yanukovych, and to a lesser extent under Poroshenko, but is nothing of the sort under Zelenskyy.

The very fact that you're debating whether your mother is a whore, gives credance to insult. And furthermore, by being defensive you're not talking about other things. The Left/MSM does this constantly - saying crazy untrue statements about people don't like, or insulting them, and the Right and Center-right just want to "talk about it" and think they've "Won" when they prove the Left wrong. And here's Achilles demonstrating again what a liar he is. And what a fool: he thinks removing the 'Dr.' and the capital W from my user name makes me look worse, when it just makes him look like a petty, small-minded creep.

Ukraine has pollsters, who operate freely, and all agree that Zelenskyy would in fact win reelection by a landslide (2-1) if one could be held. Even the three people most likely to run against him agree that elections cannot be held under Russian bomb, drone, and missile attack, without massive slaughter of voters, and without disenfranchising the millions living under Russian occupation. That's UK ambassador and former army chief Zaluzhnyi, previous P.M. Poroshenko, whom Zelenskyy defeated, and the woman whom Yanukovych defeated, quite likely by cheating, Tymoshenko. All three hate each other, and the latter two hate Zelenskyy, but all agree that elections must be postponed. (And none of them, or any of Zelenskyy's "political opponents", are in jail, unless they were caught calling in targeting locations to the Russians, or taking bribes. I thought we were all against corruption.) I've explained all this more than once before, and Achilles doesn't disagree, he just ignores the argument and repeats his false claims in later threads as if they hadn't been refuted.

The fact that the Donbas voted overwhelmingly for local boy Yanukovych over western Ukrainian Tymoshenko is of course utterly irrelevant. They also celebrated when he abandoned his post and fled to his puppet-master Putin, and his party's candidate got 3.07% in the next election. I've mentioned this before: why doesn't Achilles even acknowledge it? The fact that both Donbas oblasts voted to join Ukraine in 1991 rather than stay in Russia, and by 5-1 margins, is of course the crucial point. The one-sixth and their Russian masters have been fighting to rule over the five-sixths.

As for Achilles' contemptible resort to the 'chickenhawk' argument, I will note that the Donbas militants also take American volunteers. Why doesn't Achilles take his cowardly worthless ass over there and join up? Is he afraid he might end up like Russell 'Tex' Bentley, the Donbass Cowboy?

Zelensky wanted to sign the Steinmeier Formula but it looks more like it was domestic pressure that forced him to back out.

One thing I firmly believe is that the people of Donetsk and Luhansk should have their own countries and be independent. It just looks like Russia and Ukraine take turns killing them. But looking at a map I don't think Russia would ever allow them to be truly independent.

Zelenksy will win if he makes a peace deal. Zelensky will lose if he continues to fight. I actually applaud Zelensky's transformation from a petulant brat getting his people killed a couple months to his appearance yesterday. He almost looked like a statesman.

I think the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces should be independent countries. Both Ukraine and Russia have treated them very poorly.

You think this is a good argument because you are stupid.

I don't support US participation in this conflict. It is not our conflict. It is actually my hope for those people that they can stop fighting and stop being used as tools by pieces of shit like weevil.

Cowards like you that argue for more war and don't fight themselves are the problem. The people in Ukraine overwhelmingly want this war to end.

Yes, one thing Achilles firmly believes is that the pro-Russian one-sixth of the population of Donbas should have the right to rule over the five-sixths who want to live in Ukraine.

As for the CNN polls, of course Ukrainians want to end the war now. Who wouldn't? The question is whether they want to end it without getting their country back, or getting back the millions of Ukrainians in the occupied territories who are being oppressed, beaten for speaking Ukrainian, having their Ukrainian books destroyed, and in many cases being tortured, raped, and murdered.

And here's petty shit Achilles acting like Thersites again with more stupid lies. All the polls show that the one way Zelenskyy would lose support is to agree to hand over the occupied territories to Russia. The people support him because he fights.

I have also repeatedly said that I do not support sending US troops to Ukraine, I support supplying them with the weapons and ammunition they need to win. We have thousands of M-1 tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles, and hundreds of F-16s, lined up in the desert ready to use. It would cost less to ship them to Ukraine than it will cost to recycle them to EPA standards, as will have to be done eventually. We've sent them 61 M-1s and zero F-16s.

Why can't Achilles stop lying?

You are too stupid and dishonest to differentiate between a lie and a disagreement.

Part of being a piece of shit is that you cannot be honest about what I say and what I want. It is obvious that a significant number of the people in Donetsk and Luhansk do not like Western Ukraine particularly after they threw out Yanukovich. There was a separatist movement and 14000 people had died in fights between Donbas and Kyiv from 2014-2022.

You are a cowardly warmonger that wants to have a purpose and a cause but you are too lame to fight yourself so you do your battles on comment forums. It is pathetic.

One more time: the "significant number" of people in the Donbas who don't want to live in Ukraine is the one-sixth of the population who voted against joining Ukraine in 1991. Why should a small minority rule over the large majority? Anyone who thinks one-sixth should rule by force over five-sixths is in fact a Fascist unAmerican asshole.

I have pointed out more than once that the coup in Crimea and the uprising in the Donbas that started in Slovyansk were both led by a Russian KGB man who had no connection with Ukraine. His name is Igor Girkin and he's still tweeting from prison. Has Achilles or Jaq ever bothered to look him up and see if I'm right? Nooo! They don't want to know the truth, which is that the supposed uprising of the people of Donbas was in fact a coup d'état orchestrated in Russia and supported by only a small minority of residents. So was the seizure of Crimea: Girkin himself has said that the local leaders who declared independence there didn't want to do it, but he 'convinced' them - he and the armed men he had with them.

The fact is that the overthrow of Yanukovych was a popular uprising against a vicious, murderous, massively corrupt, Putin-puppet oligarch, and the seizures of Crimea and the Donbas were a pair of coups by Russian agents led by Girkin, with the help of some paid local collaborators.

Anyone who calls the Maiden rebellion a 'coup', or the Russian seizures of Crimea and Donbas 'uprisings' has demonstrated his utter ignorance of the most basic facts of modern history, and his willingness to swallow the most blatant lies of Russian propaganda. That's our Achilles!

Of course I am perfectly capable of telling the difference between a lie and a disagreement. I can tell that Achilles is a liar because he never addresses my arguments as a disagreeable person would, he simply ignores them and repeats the falsehoods I have rebutted as if they were unscathed. He also calls me a liar and a coward, which makes him a filthy hypocrite when he demands not to be called a liar himself, even while telling lies.

Again. How has Trump gone against the Constitution?

[Leland] "They would call him an authoritarian for taking that much landz". Well, yeah, if Trump somehow forced Putin to cede Moscow, St. Petersburg, and thousands of miles of land to the US and Ukrainre he would be a nauseating aggressor. But that's how DT's fantasies work: he thinks we have a right to Greenland and Canada and God knows what else. No, Putin just needs to get the hell out of Ukraine, and we don't need any part of fricken Russia

We should be happy that Trump now seems willing to guarantee Ukraine's security. But we should remain worried that while Trump is the most powerful person in the world, the second most powerful is the last one who flattered him. This is diplomacy as reality TV produced by and starring a deeply insecure narcissist.

We haven't yet seen the last twist in this drama.

Inga. Need I remind you,(and all the usual suspects), that if not for you and your voter harvesting we, the United States, wouldn't be in this position. It was the president that you installed that gave Putin permission,(who's Putin's stooge?) to invade Ukraine. You have a lot to answer for in this, so it isn't a good look for you to be grinding on the only person who is actively trying to stop this war. I'm not just singling you out, but all the resident chuckleheads.
