"A Bannon-Vance primary would trigger an explosive civil war within Trump's populist movement, pitting its original architect against its institutional inheritor."

Intones The Daily Mail, in "Steve Bannon is secretly plotting a sensational run for president in 2028 ... and he's already knifing his likely rival: 'I created him.'"

Agree 100%. The best thing about the information age is that anyone mildly curious can find video of Donald Trump going back well into the '80s or earlier saying the exact same things about his core positions on the border, international trade, American exceptionalism, foreign relations.

Having done my best to ignore him prior to the Golden Escalator Moment (GEM) I was at first surprised how consistent he is over the decades, and then highly admired him.

Now I think we are witness to one of the greatest peaceful transitions of power in history from big governments to the people and Old Europe to a newly invigorated USA, on the verge of our 250th anniversary. In this context Trump is a continuation of the Wall Coming Down / end to the cold war / dirt on the grave of the UN and one-world types. Klaus and the WEF are crumbling. America and traditional values are thriving and reasserting themselves into the greater culture displacing the rot of progressivism and the farrago of lies that were needed to prop it up.

Bullshit. He went straight into the Marines and served honorably. Then he worked in Venture Capital while writing his best-selling memoir. Forgot the summary above: Trump's vision of America didn't change and I see that as the true heart of the MAGA movement. Trump has always wanted to promote America the way he promotes Trump: full time.

Bannon running would be too on brand. I've long viewed him as nothing more than a verbose self-promoter. He's brilliant. Of that there's no question. But his cause is him. It seems very clear to me that Steve Bannon has always put Steve Bannon above all else. And yes- I know that he went to jail for his stand on J6 and his refusal to appear before Congress. In my mind, even that was a planned 'self sacrifice' to give him even more cred, even more sway with the MAGA electorate. So that every utterance after that, had to be acknowledged with a wink and a nod, that he is truly a man of the people.

Steve Bannon is best at what he currently does. As a pontificator from the sidelines. He has some great insights, some wacky ones, and can stir people to action when needed. Even when not needed. But as a ruling leader? Yikes. I would not want that in charge of my life.

Here's my issue for JD: a federal usury rate on credit cards.

There is no reason - other than pure greed - that the banks charge well over 20% on credit cards.

I don't see him running for President, but what do I know?

Prof. M. Drout ने कहा…

It seems to me that if the primary were held today the two finalists would be Vance and Rubio (and I'm really surprised to be saying that). The problem for Vance is that its really difficult for the Vice President to DO anything, and Rubio has been massively outperforming expectations.

Bannon and those supporting him are imagining that the Republican primary will be like that of 2016: a big crowd of annoying, uncharismatic people will no political accomplishments. That will not be the case this time. Probably Ted Cruz will throw his hat into the ring (and get stomped, along with DeSantis and Vivek and Bannon), but the real contest will be between the two highest profiles in the current administration, which is too bad because for the Schadenfreude alone I'd love to see Tulsi Gabbard elected President before Hilary Clinton dies (I also think Gabbard could be very good, but we have to see how she functions as an executive, which is also what I want to know about Vance).

I'm hopeful that Rubio learned a lesson from the self-defenestration of DeSantis and therefore ignores the consultants and runs a "he's great, but I'm even better" campaign (DeSantis could have been VP if he'd ignored the consultants and fired everyone associated with his online supporters).

Trump will not anoint anyone in his administration in advance but will just say how great both/all are (I can't imagine him just keeping his mouth shut during the primaries, which is what he should do).

Because the Republicans tend to like orderly hierarchies and transitions, I expect it will be a Vance / Rubio ticket, but it's very early.

Hassayamper ने कहा…

I don't think this is going anywhere. I think Bannon has a cap of 25% or so head-to-head against Vance in the primaries, and that's being generous.

I said much the same about Trump in 2015-2016, and was wrong, but I don't think I am again.

tommyesq ने कहा…

Oh yeah, this for sure. I've been very impressed with her so far. She's capable, fearless, and the zeal of the convert is strong in her.

Hassayamper ने कहा…

The fact that the red states are frantically trying to re-gerrymander their House voting districts shows how vulnerable they feel on the economy going into the midterm elections next year.

The midterms are always tough for the party in power, especially when it holds the Presidential/Congressional trifecta. I think the Republicans are in better shape than they have been for the midterms in quite a while, especially when you consider how much the surreptitious taxpayer subsidies for the Democrats have dried up, and how aggressively the Trump administration is going after bloated, inaccurate voter rolls and electoral fraud.

When Democrats bitch about gerrymandering, the only proper response is a horse laugh in their faces. They've long since picked all the low hanging fruit on that tree. I hope Republicans press forward to do it every bit as aggressively, in every place that it's possible. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to shatter the Democrats at the national level, and turn them into a pitiful regional rump party for the next few decades.

I'm not going to bother to check the archives (nor am I asking anyone to do so) but I'd bet many of the comments on this thread match quite closely to what folks were saying about Trump in 2015 right after he joined the race......folks on the right.
I think Bannon wants to be campaign manager for Ro Khanna in 2028. He's long preached that our elections need to be MagaA vs MagaB and he's often named RK as someone on the D side who can make the case. But there's zero chance RK would hire Bannon. The 2016 party takeover was of the Rs, the Ds are a much more crooked animal.

I used to think this, but it may instill some fiscal discipline on people with bad credit histories. You'd have to be a complete fool or mentally ill to run a balance. We'll see what happens when T bills get near 20%.

He went right into the Marines the same way Desantis became a JAG. He got a job in "Venture Capital" like Romney did. He just spent very short amounts of time doing these things.

Everything he did since enrolling in Yale was meant to build a resume for seeking political office. He made this plan to seek office while at Yale surrounded by people who are virulently anti-American and morally reprehensible.

I wont trust JD Vance until he is in the private sector for at least a decade.

Stupid and wrong as usual.

What you are actually seeing is that Republicans finally acknowledge that Democrats are evil as an organization and that you will cannot fight evil while adhering to principles the other side obviously does not hold.

Democrats are threatening to fight back with more Gerrymandering which is hilarious because there are zero seats for them to gain because they have already done it themselves.

This is right. Bannon doesn't have the charisma to build a coalition like Trump did.

But he clearly built the framework for the coalition that Trump leads.

The main issue that the Republican Party faces in 2028 is understanding that every grifting dishonest greedy conniving snake desperately wants to inherit what Trump built. Of the 10 or so people that declare for the primary 8 of them are going to be Yale/Harvard trained cyphers like Vance and Desantis and Cruz who have spent their entire lives building a resume to run for office.

The reason Trump is a good executive and actually delivers on his promises is he was a businessman his whole life. He had decades in the private sector. Someone like Rubio who did not plan his political career while at Yale/Harvard would be a distant second choice.

If a Yale/Harvard plant like Vance or Desantis takes the nomination it will be HW Bush II.

The 2028 Republican primary is going to be brutal. No President previously elected is going to enter the office with as much political capital as the Republican that wins the primary in 2028. Not even Bush I.

This means that every snake and cockroach is going to come out of the woodwork and all of the oligarch energy and money will be brought to bear. Apps and communication models are being built now and will be test run in 2026.
