"Wow. Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women. I’m sure that will poll well…."

I already blogged Sweeneygate yesterday, and I wouldn't bring it up again — certainly not just because Cruz weighed in — but it resonates with this New York Times "Opinions" podcast I'm in the middle of listening to this morning:

That's a gift link that goes to the NYT page with the audio and a transcript. Keep in mind that there's an idea that there's something right wing/Nazi about beautiful white women. The NYT isn't quite saying that. The columnist Jessica Grose, interviewed at the link, is working on something (presumably) more sophisticated):
Interviewer: There’s been a resurgence in explicit “be thin” messaging and culture. With the Ozempic boom, we see the body-shaming of actresses like Sydney Sweeney and red carpets that were already filled with thin actresses becoming even thinner. On the right, there’s been a focus on body size that’s been bundled up not just with health and wellness, but with religion, morals and politics. And so when everything is political and we’re more divided than ever, should the size and shape of our bodies be any different? I’m here today with the Opinion writer Jessica Gross to understand why the right is obsessed with thinness and why that message is winning over women. Jess, I want to start first by asking you what the messaging on diet and thinness coming from the Christian influencer spaces is — what do you see there?

Jessica Grose: So it’s really encapsulated by some things that the wellness influencer Alex Clark said at the Young Women’s Leadership Summit.

Audio clip of Alex Clark: Look around this room, let’s just be honest. It’s never been hotter to be a conservative. You are in this room and you are witnessing a cultural revolution. We’ve got the girls who lift weights, eat clean, have their hormones balanced, have their lives together. Less Prozac, more protein. Less burnout, more babies. Less feminism, more femininity.
Grose: And by contrast, liberals are TikTok activists with five shades of autism, panic attacks and a ring light. So it’s really defining what is “normal” as a very narrow ideal of womanhood. It’s all tied up with not just body size, but also behavior....So I think it’s a reaction to the body positivity movement, which I would say peaked about 10 years ago. It was the idea that weight is not tied directly to health and that you can be healthy and not rail-thin....

I’m here today with the Opinion writer Jessica Gross to understand why the right is obsessed with thinness and why that message is winning over women.

There is the strawman. Similar to conflating immigration with illegal immigration to claim 'the right' is anti-immigrant. The quoted quote conflates healthy size and thinness to imply that 'the right' is for anorexic-looking pencil bodies rather than healthy looking shapes.

Same game, different name.

I'd love to see a poll that queries whether men or women are more obsessed with young women's bodies.

Both see the power of the "Sweeney body", and both want to assert control, but the kind of control they wish to assert is very, very different.

These people are absolutely insane. Avoid crazy people if you want to keep your own sanity.

Temujin ayon kay ...

The left fights most of their battles in their own heads. And they then spill out into the public eye via the NY Times staff, which cannot seem to get out of its own way. Nobody in their right mind hates to look at beautiful people- women or men. Throughout the ages, beauty has been memorialized in all forms of art.

Until today. Regressive minds who love to think of themselves as 'progressive' have been feeding us the idea of 'body shaming' for the last few years. Telling us to celebrate large bodies, people who are clearly in danger, health-wise.

In a country that is epidemically obese, celebrating people in obvious poor health is, to say the least, counter intuitive. And taking the additional step of denigrating someone who is not only beautiful, but has an obviously great body, referring to it as racist, or some other 'ist' is simply insane.

And progressives are nothing, if not insane.

Here's a more detailed look at the research:
Obesity Rates:
Studies have shown that conservative voters tend to have higher odds of living with obesity compared to those who vote for left-leaning parties. For example, one study found that Conservative voters had a 42-54% higher chance of being obese than those who voted for the Labour or Liberal Democrat parties.
BMI and Health Behaviors:
Conservative voters also tend to have higher average BMI scores, according to Loughborough University. Furthermore, research indicates that conservative voters may engage in fewer healthy behaviors, such as eating fewer fruits and vegetables, consuming more high-fat and processed foods, and exercising less, compared to liberals.

I love how the NYT's identifies anything Chrisitian as "rightwing". But its not "Rightwing" its just Christian. I can quote you all the NT bible verses, but Protestants have always been in favor of healthy living and "Healthy bodies".

That's why protestant churches had States ban smoking in the early 20th century and were part of the temperance movement.

Well..... no. Thin means thin. Meaty means meaty. Chubby means chubby. Fat means fat. Olive Oyl is thin, skinny even. Sydney Sweeney isn't very thin, when you see the not-so-artful photos of her that show butt and legs, from suboptimal angles.

One thing that has been annoying about my conversion from supporting Trump in his first term to mostly opposition in his second is finding myself on the same side of arguments as crazy women with green hair. It is almost enough to make me embrace magaism.

One observation about the maga-right, is that although they have a surprisingly healthy attitude about women's physiology, their attitudes toward men is fairly bizarre. Reading right-wing stuff makes it seem like men on the right have a neurosis that is a is the masculine analog of what anorexia was for women. (Do women still get anorexic, I haven't heard that in a long time.)

RCOCEAN II ayon kay ...

The other thing is that the neurotics, mentally ill people and pyschiatrists and pyschologists vote Democrat. They always have. And its the same thing with felons. The D party always wants to let criminals vote, because they vote 9-1 Democrat.

There is a HUGE divide in this country, and Republicans must take it seriously.

The Democrat Party is the party of fat, ugly blue-haired nose-ring wearing women that nobody wants to fuck. That's a bloc of voters that's never going to change and represents a huge threat.

We need to get more of them back into the insane asylums and out of the voting population.

Just an old country lawyer ayon kay ...

Let me be sure that I understand the thrust of her argument:
1. Conservative women are rejecting the more toxic versions of late stage feminism, are working out, trying to live healthy lives, are turning to religion, want a traditional family life, are happier and exhibit better mental health.
2. Progressive women are anxious, obese, try to make them selves look worse than they naturally are, hate white people in general and white men in particular, howl at the moon, and are generally miserable.
3. Somehow 1 is problematic and is the conservatives fault. Another example of rampant white supremacy on the right. This seems to be every feature story we find in legacy media.
"Why aren't the Nazi motherf*rs miserable like us?"

RCOCEAN II ayon kay ...

Social liberalism has always targeted unhappy and marginalized people and given them a home, a cause, something to make them feel better and more powerful. And also an enemy to fight: Christian America.

Thats become the main focus of the Left, along with the race issue. Once "class warfare" played itself out, the new "social/race war" was started to replace it.

It makes sense that the Left would try to enlist fat women, ugly women, unhappy women, lesbians, etc. under their banner. Fatties of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your diet pills.

My angle is she's fine as is. No need for her to get skinnier or bulk up. And yes I agree with others who perceive the s-word as indicative of Twiggy-like thinness. "Skinny" means "too thin." YMMV.

I think it's more that - as we've all been hearing since the election - the left doesn't actually have a coherent (or at least sellable) platform right now, just "we hate Trump." So they're left opposing everything they perceive the right to be doing, no matter how sane and normal it is.

Everybody already knows, and has known, what constitutes 'normal". Nearly everything pushed by the left is abnormal, and they know it. So, Sydney can bring home the oil, and change it in the pan. Good for her. There's nothing like being productive, and enjoying yourself, too.

My point about “thinness” and “ skinny” is simply this is the way the words are being used in the discussion on the podcast. “Thin” isn’t like “fat” where the connotation is negative. Not saying that’s how it should be or it comports with the dictionary, just that’s what it means in this context.

With the Ozempic boom, we see the body-shaming of actresses like Sydney Sweeney

No one is body shaming her except other women (and homosexuals in the fashion/showbiz orbit).

Ask as many normal heterosexual men as you like, 99.9% will say she looks pretty near perfect.

Mr. T. ayon kay ...

Only the incel leftists at thr NYT would think that has anything to do with "christian" whatever. The only thing remotely linked to Sydney Sweeney regarding "christian" preference is the wish of any intelligent, normal male to know her better in the biblical sense. It doesn't even matter which version. King James, if you like. Or even Oxford Annotated with plenty of footnotes in the back near the Appendix, should that tickle her fancy.

In fact, I feel confident I speak for our Hebrew colleagues that many of them wouldn't mind some quick, back and forth Passovers of her-levened or otherwise. Muzzletuff!

Skinny models are historically a lefty thing. See, e.g., any Vogue in the last 30 years. A few token fatties don’t alter reality.

Every red blooded person who uses "he" and "him" as pronouns naturally gets excited when he contemplates Ms. Sweeney's hooters. I say that like there's nothing wrong with that. And if it sells a few pairs of jeans and denim jackets, that's okay too.

OTOH putting jeans and jackets on a Stacy Abrams clone just isn't going to cut it in the increased market share department. At least not among those who use he and him.

“I come from a family of mechanics,” Sweeney told Nylon. “It’s in my blood.” If that wasn’t enough motivation, her best friend’s father is the classic Porsche builder Rod Emory, best known for his custom 356s, who she considers “a second dad.” Emory started Emory Motorsports in 1996, which restores and restyles vintage Porsches.

“He cleared out a section of his shop for me,” Sweeney told Vanity Fair. “And whenever I was free, not filming, I would go in and learn and do as much of the work as I could.”

There is no difference between "creepy middle-aged men" and teenage boys, as far as female attractions go. For the most part pretty girls are going to be equally attractive to the entire male gender.

Is it because women are barefoot, pregnant, and fat? Shame.

The ideal Christian is not a bloc in DEIst ideiology. The ideal Christian woman subscribes to principles of Christian temperance, is female sex and feminine gender by Nature.

Achilles ayon kay ...

We have to be honest about what is actually going on here.

Fat middle aged girl bosses and Karens are mad that men place value on fertility and beauty. They spent their fertile years building an HR/Bureaucracy career producing nothing of value. Meanwhile they were whoring themselves out to men who were willing to sleep with them but would never marry them. And now they are past fertility and angry that men wont marry them. If a man was stupid enough to marry them they initiate most of the divorces and take his money/life/kids.

These terrible women were in power recently. Women have been in charge of things they should not have been in charge of. They have torn apart multiple generations through a variety of institutions like our education system.

Men are going to start speaking up and making their preferences known again. Trump was a tipping point. The Sweeny ads are just the beginning of the swing of the pendulum. Men are going to put Karen in her place and there are a lot of young and middle aged women that have or want happy healthy children that will help them do that.

Conservatives indeed do have higher BMIs than liberals. They also indulge far, far less in alcohol, drugs, and plastic surgery. The weight problems became a focus of concern among conservative churches, and weight-loss, framed as being their for your family and appreciating what God has given you spawned sermons and exercise programs. Medishare, the Christian health plan, reduces your monthly rates if you lose weight, sends overweight clients 10,000 step wristwatches, and offers free weight counselors and ways to start group exercise programs. All these efforts have helped reduce the weight problems a.ong this community.

What reporter could not notice this? It's been a pretty intense cultural transformation.
