Writes the man, to the WaPo advice columnist, about his wife who "is one of those people whose entire life is put on display on social media." "Every single thing she experiences or knows about, good or bad, is immediately posted."
The advice columnist tells him not only that there's nothing he can do but also dings him for failing to say "a single positive word about your wife or your relationship in your letter."
I've always liked when newspaper advice columnists resist taking the letter-writer's point of view and sling inferences about something else that might really be going on.
Reminds me of how I read newspaper articles.

So, there's nothing he can do? I disagree. They need to find an advice columnist that has more of an imagination.
Yah, he can love her but still fuck with her a bit- DM me for inspiration…
Pussy is always a positive.
Maybe he ought to start posting some of the things she's not eager to have her friends and followers see. Videos of her taking 30 narcissistic selfies in a row or spending fifteen minutes obsessively staging the perfect "spontaneous" Instagram snapshot.
If the the sexes were reversed, the advice would be completely different.
Gell-Mann resistance.
Grounds for a fault divorce
"If the the sexes were reversed, the advice would be completely different."
That was my first thought.
If the the sexes were reversed, the advice would be completely different.
+1. And Althouse would still side with the woman.
Not "the advice columnist" -- WaPo readers who handle the overflow for the advice columnist.
Advice to wife: dump the bum and find yourself some nice, servile LLM who will support your every whim and fancy.
"I've always liked when newspaper advice columnists resist taking the letter-writer's point of view "
and, yet.. Surprisingly; NOT A SINGLE columnist..
IN THE HISTORY OF THE MEDIA..
has EVER taken the side of the husband.. Interesting, isn't it?
Imagine, now, the exact same letter written by a wife about a husband. How would Hax handle that, do you suppose?
“Pussy is always a positive”
Two words: Stacey Abrams
And Bob Boyd beat me to it.
And Gilbar.
“Althouse would still side with the woman.“
Show us you’ve been reading Althouse for 20 years without comprehending Althouse for 20 years.
I read Hax a lot years ago and thought she was pretty insightful. But this woman sounds like a nut.
She's writing about "her mom’s very private struggles with IBS."
"You want some more advice? Lose some weight, you fat slob."
Geez.
While I routinely look for alternative perspectives and play devil's advocate...there are some crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy social media women out there. Women often have an elevated focus on social interaction and attention, whereby living online turns some into dysfunctional plastic-brained narcissists or leaves them cowering in constant fear.
What a realistic columnist may have written: "Cut your losses and move on. She's not your type and never will be. You probably were attracted to her narcissistic focus on self and appearance, and are belatedly learning that beauty is just skin deep."
‘She's writing about "her mom’s very private struggles with IBS”.
For your consideration: “struggles with IBS” are seldom, if ever, “private”.
If he needs a way to leave, may I suggest a Coldplay concert with a new so?
Why does anyone contact an advice columnist when we have AI? Sounds like he wants some media time too.
My wife has an Instagram account that she uses for keeping up with the doings of our extended family, plus a few selected cooking shows and "mommy blogger" types. She posts about 10 times a year. Birthday wishes, happy Christmas/Easter/Independence day, maybe a pic or two when we get back from an interesting vacation. I'm so happy she is mature and internally self-possessed enough not to live her life around social media.
"...it's her life, her right."
When one marries it becomes, "our life," doesn't it? Otherwise, what the hell are you there for? Sounds like they both need to learn some communication skills.
It seems to be a mutual deficit.
OTOH if she learns to monetize her Instagram he probably wouldn't mind at all. In fact he'd be laughing all the way to the proverbial bank. He doesn't know how to be a good manager is the problem. She has a gift and he sees it as a burden.
Anyway, that's an alternative pov.
Maybe there's nothing positive to say about her.
"Calm down" is said to be entertaining. I've never used it myself as I encounter sulking.
What man in his right mind would, when confronted by a domestic dispute, think to himself, "I know what to do, I'll write a letter to Carolyn Hax, WaPo advice columnist."
How could you possibly imagine that this will turn out well?
@Ampersand: The type of man who is convinced he's right and wants validation so he can show his wife and say, "See?" They seem like a lovely couple. Needy and blind.
IBS. Internet Blab Syndrome.
"I know what to do, I'll write a letter to Carolyn Hax, WaPo advice columnist."
Considering Hax divorced her husband and immediately got pregnant with another man's twins, I'm guessing she doesn't have much in the way of insight.
Iman said "For your consideration: “struggles with IBS” are seldom, if ever, “private”.
LOL. And that's the truth!!!
"Reminds me of how I read newspaper articles. " This is brilliant oin so many levels.
She's writing about "her mom’s very private struggles with IBS. If I were her mom, I'd be irritated too.
